Snapshots of Life house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. On December 8th, 2016, members of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at Bay Shore High School took part in Dress for Success. Dress for Success is a campaign created by the national organization to promote awareness of business education and

illustrate the impact of dressing for success at the workplace. Students are encouraged to dress up and contribute $1 to be eligible to win various prizes donated by local businesses. The money collected goes towards student scholarships.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Officials Elected The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has elected its new officers for 2017 at their annual meeting on January 27th. Arthur K. Wallach, AP, of Commack, NY has been elected as Squadron Commander. Elected to serve with Commander Wallach is John Pergola, AP, of Patchogue, who will be Executive Officer; James M. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace as Squadron Educational Officer; James F. Milton, AP, of Islip Terrace as Secretary; and Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer. The Change of Watch Meeting, installing these officers, will be on Friday, February 17th, at the Rusy Bohm American Legion, New York, beginning at 8

p.m. C o m m a n d e r- E l e c t Wallach is a Squadron Advanced Pilot of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Executive Officer over this last year. His previous Squadron responsibilities include being the Administrative Office in 2015. Arthur has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: achieved the grade of Pilot and Seamanship in 2011, and the Basic Boating Course in 1998. He has also earned Educational Proficiency in 2002, the Pilot Award in 2003, and became a Senior Member of the United States Power Squadron in 2005. He successfully completed Engine Maintenance and Marine Electrical Systems

in 2001 and Weather and Instructor Development in 2016. Arthur Wallach has earned eight Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron. The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation of recreational boating, boating safety, and education. As a public service, the Power Squadron offers Safe Boating Courses. Through this course, over three million students have already learned how to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. These services may be provided to children who have or are suspected of having a disability and are eligible based on NYSED and NYSDOH guidelines for eligibility. For Early Intervention, referrals are made to the Suffolk County Department of Health. For Preschool services, refer to your local school district Committee on Preschool Special Education. All services provided for eligible children are funded through your local municipality and NYS, there is no out of pocket expense. Parents will, however, be expected to pay for the costs of any childcare. Based on an evaluation, the Municipality for Early Intervention and your District CPSE for preschool will determine the type of service, frequency, duration, location and provider of services. All treating therapists and teachers are appropriately licensed and/or certified according to the regulations of the NYSDOH and/or NYSED.
