Long Island Fight for Charity, the nation’s only all-volunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2018 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, over 300 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer. If you ever wanted to do something different and challenge yourself this is the year to make the commitment. HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND
“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!
There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we
see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken
them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

HONORING A LIFE - Congressman Pete King recently attended a ceremony held at the First Baptist Church in Bay Shore to honor NYPD Detective Tommy Merriweather - an American hero who died five years ago (1/21/13) of cancer resulting from his tireless work at Ground Zero following the horrific attacks of 9/11. Since Det. Merriweather’s death, Congressman King has worked with his widow Jackie to ensure that his legacy and memory are acknowledged and remembered, including having a Bay Shore street renamed in his honor. TEAMWORK MAKES PERFECT - The award-winning Maroon Echo staff knows that teamwork is important for achieving outcomes. The scholars from Bay Shore High School’s student-run newspaper work together to make sure the pieces appearing in the paper are properly edited.
On January 11th, local senior living community Atria Bay Shore welcomed friends and family members to join residents and staff for Better Together, a story-sharing event that is part of an ongoing effort to create a wiser, more connected world. Better Together was the first in a series of events Atria Bay Shore will host to celebrate the importance of storytelling, as a means of human connection Atria Bay Shore is one of nearly 200 senior living communities across the U.S. and Canada operated by Atria Senior Living, each of which will host similar events throughout the year. The event series is inspired by Atria StoryWise, Atria’s latest intentionally crafted gift for its residents and their families. Atria
StoryWise is a collection of thoughtfully curated topics and cues designed to spark memories, tap into personal experiences and help people everywhere connect more deeply through the power of storytelling. It was given as a boxed set of cards to Atria residents and families, and is available to everyone as a free iPhone app. The app allows users to record, share and keep their stories. Yesterday’s event doubled as a fundraiser to benefit our nation’s most prized story repositories – libraries. Until January 31st, Atria will donate $1 for every story shared through the wisdom library in the Atria StoryWise app to the American Library Association. The association’s work
is defined by eight key action areas, including education and lifelong learning – values shared by Atria Senior Living and incorporated into programs that are offered daily at each of its LATIN SCHOLARS - Juniors and seniors studying Latin at Bay Shore High School communities, including took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The scholars were able to see first hand Atria Bay Shore. some of the Roman architecture they have studied in class. “Storytelling is a simple and meaningful way to connect and pass wisdom from one generation to the next,” said Kathleen O’Connor, Engage Life Director at Atria Bay Shore. “Our residents, their families, and our staff loved the opportunity to hear and share stories with leaders in our community while contributing to the American Library Association. I’m looking forward to our future programs around Atria StoryWise.”
