The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org

Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! What to expect in a 10-week curriculum: Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.

All coaches are trained to teach as intended, while building relationships with and between girls, creating a positive, inclusive environment and supporting individual improvement. During the 10 weeks, girls will also be inspired to build lives of purpose and to make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each team will create and execute a community service project. How you can get involved: If you or someone you know would like to register for their spring program, you can! They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!

Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends.

Middle School Students Work With Broadway Star Recently, the Bay Shore Middle School Drama Club had the opportunity to meet with professional Broadway actor Giuseppe Bausilio. Giuseppe is known for such roles as “Billy” in Billy Elliott and “Race” in Newsies. He is currently playing the role of Charles Lee in Hamilton. This was quite an experience for the middle school drama club! During the workshop, Giuseppe performed for the students, then watched the students perform two scenes and provided feedback on their acting, singing, and dancing. He led a dance workshop using choreography from the Broadway production of Newsies. There was also time for a Q&A session, autographs and photos. “I felt like someone found a combination lock

that was inside of me,” said 8th grade student Isaiah Baston. “It improved my understanding of the character. He was super talented and I’m really grateful we were given the opportunity to work with him.” “The workshop was a unique opportunity,” said 7th grade student Amber Marquez. “I got the determination to keep going no matter what happens. Giuseppe told us that he had back surgery, but that he kept going with what he loved to do. He told me to have fun with my character, and there are no limits to what I can do.” “I think he’s a nice person to work with and it was really exciting having a Broadway star at our school,” said 6th grade student Brianna Colon. “I

remember him telling us we were really good and it made me feel happy coming from a professional actor.” “Receiving feedback from a Broadway star made me feel respected,” said 6th grade student Alex Neuberger. “Giuseppe is just an all around nice guy!” “This workshop will always be a highlight of my final year in middle school drama,” said 8th grade student Krista Flynn. “This workshop was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially for middle school students,” said 8th grade student David Reyes. “The tips he gave us motivated me to improve my character in the show.” This workshop was made possible by the generosity of the Bay Shore Schools Arts & Education Fund (BSSAEF) and Theater Sponsors of Bay Shore.
