BAY SHORE STUDENT ORGANIZES CLEANUP - This past fall the Bay Shore/ Brentwood Varsity Swimming and Diving team participated in a gazebo cleanup. Swimmer Melani Quituisaca organized the event with the help of the Bay Shore Rotary Club and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). This past summer, she attended a RYLA event in Massachusetts. While at this retreat she learned how to organize her very first community service project with the help of Keep Islip Clean, Bay Shore Beautification Society, and the Bay Shore Rotary Club. United States Navy Blue Angels To Headline 18th Annual Bethpage Air Show

The scouts used the Peace Light from Bethlehem to ignite the luminaries around the perimeter of Wohseepee Park. This is a wonderful tradition to end the year of scouting service in the Bay Shore/ Brightwaters area, bring closure to 2021 and helping usher in the new year.. It was also announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention today that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds and the F-22 Raptor with be performing. “We are thrilled to welcome the United States Navy Blue Angels back to Long Island in 2022,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. “The last time

the Blues performed on Long Island was in 2018 as the 2020 show was cancelled due to the pandemic. Planning for the show has already begun and with two jet teams performing, two native New Yorkers on the Blue Angels’ team, and a host of other noted pilots on board, this year’s show is going to be spectacular!” “Bethpage is very proud to be a part of this special air show that has grown to become one of the most beloved air shows in the country,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “The addition of the Golden Knights, the Royal Canadian Snowbirds, and the F-22 Raptor, leading up to the Blues as the headliner, will make a great show for the fans this year.” It was also announced that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will return

as headliners for the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Sunday, May 27, 2023 and Monday, May 28, 2023. This year’s Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach will be the U.S. Navy Blue Angel’s 9th appearance as headliners at the show. Over 367,000 people attended the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach the last time the squadron headlined in 2018. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were also scheduled to perform again in 2020 when the show was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team participated in the first Bethpage Virtual Air Show in 2020 by recording special video messages for fans and providing exclusive video footage. Additional 2022 performers will be announced shortly.

Troops sometimes find themselves needing support services provided by the United Service Organizations (USO). Northwell Staff Packs Over 2,000 Holiday Gifts For Youngsters In Need

With holiday music blasting overhead, dozens of Northwell Health employees gathered together for a marathon gift-wrapping session to ensure that school-age children enjoy a happy holiday season. “I am so proud of each Northwell employee and all of our community partners who made this joyful event possible,” said Edward Fraser, vice president of Community Relations at Northwell. “Today, literally hundreds of our team members joined together to wrap thousands of gifts for children in the communities we serve. It is our belief that no child

should be denied the gift of joy at the holidays.” Through an on-line platform operated by Northwell’s nonprofit project partner, Supplies for Success, employee donations were used to provide art supplies and other gifts for different age categories. No contribution was too great or too small. And, the results are impressive: more than $40,000 was collected for this worthy cause. All the wrapped gifts will be distributed to families who cannot afford them in in four Long Island communities (Brentwood, Bay Shore, Freeport, Hempstead) as well as

locales in Manhattan, Westchester and Staten Island. Along with the gift, the final item placed in each bag was a hand-written, holiday message by the staff member who packed it. At the bottom of their bags, students will find such joyful messages as, “Happy holidays,” or simply, “Enjoy!” The Northwell “elves” who participated in the gift-wrapping marathon, along with Mindy Richenstein, founder and president of Supplies for Success, said that the motto of the day was, “All children deserve the gift of joy at the holidays!”

Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Begins 20th Anniversary Year By Awarding Nearly $1 Million Research Grant To Feinstein Institutes For Medical Research The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) began its 20th anniversary year by announcing a $998,156 grant to the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research to expand research into developing new treatments aimed at addressing some of the most problematic behaviors of dementia— hallucinations, delusions, and aggression. The new five-year study builds on research previously conducted with a $500,000 grant AFA awarded to the Feinstein Institutes in 2016. Psychotic symptoms and aggression are among the most troubling manifestations of dementia-related illnesses. Violent behavior directed towards caregivers is

emotionally devastating and can be dangerous for those charged with providing a safe environment. Tragically, these behaviors are difficult to treat; and persistence of these symptoms are often the indication for placement outside of the home in a residential healthcare setting. “There’s no better way to begin AFA’s 20th anniversary year than by making this investment in hope,” said AFA Founder and Board Chairman Bert E. Brodsky. “Finding new ways to treat these symptoms would have an enormous impact on safety and quality of life— both for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Researchers at the Feinstein Institutes are

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

A previous discovery made by the team linked impairments in the processing of facial emotion with the onset of psychosis in Alzheimer’s. This, together with new PET scan evidence of abnormal tau in brain regions believed to be critical for this faculty led investigators to the hypothesis that tau disrupts networks in regions of the brain necessary for reality testing. Investigators believe that this may result in psychosis and aggression. “The funding provided by AFA made our work possible; and the ongoing support is critical, allowing us to do the necessary research to

translate these discoveries into safe and effective treatments for patients and caregivers,” says Dr. Koppel. The next five-year phase funded by the new AFA grant aims to target these symptoms through the development of immune therapies in the form of antibodies that bind to pathogenic tau. Researchers will conduct a study comprised of three types of participants— those with both Alzheimer’s and psychosis, those with Alzheimer’s but without psychosis, and healthy controls between the ages of 65 and 85. Participants will undergo a battery of cognitive and electrophysiologic testing, with levels and location of tau quantified in each group with new tau PET imaging technology. The goal is to identify which areas of the brain correspond to specific symptoms, so that they can be targeted through antibody treatments. AFA is able to award
