It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I

delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few

months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Athletes Receive Accolades Bridget Kanaley has been one of the top distance runners in New York State for the past two years. She qualified for the States in CrossCountry in 2015 & 2016, was the 2016 Runnerof-the-Year in League 3, was runner-up in the 2016 Suffolk County XC Championships, was All-New York State, Newsday All-Long Island Selection, USA Track & Field All-Long Island, All County, All-Division and All-League. Bridget is one of the top five CrossCountry runners in Bay Shore history and Bay Shore has been the best Cross-Country program in Suffolk County since girls started running Cross-Country in the late 1970’s. She has a 5k best of 18:08.43. Bridget has a GPA of 93, is involved with Athletes Helping Athletes, has been a two year captain and led Bay Shore Girls CrossCountry to the League 3 Championship and Division 2 Championship. Bridget is an outstanding young lady, who will move on and compete at Elon University in North Carolina on a track scholarship.

Sydney Carpenter is only a freshman, but has made a huge impact on the running scene, not only at Bay Shore but also on Long Island. Sydney has been All-League and All-Division in 2015 and 2016, in addition to All-County, USA Track & Field All-Long Island and All-Northeast in 2016. She was the Individual Champ in the Freshman CrossCountry Championships in 2015 and broke the Bay Shore eighth grade school record (Laura Cummings, 15:50.0) for the 2.5 mile course at Van Cortlandt Park, with a blazing 15:48.6. Since Sydney has been on the team, they have won two League and Division Championships, and posted an 11-0 record. The team was also ranked number 2 on Long Island, number 2 in Suffolk County and number 10 in New York State, with Sydney as itsr second best runner. Her best 5k time is 19:07.38. Team captain, Kevin Martinez had an outstanding senior season for the Bay Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team. In recognition

of his hard work and performance, he received numerous awards and accolades. He was the leading regular season goal scorer in Class AA in Suffolk County and was named League II MVP, All-Region, First Team All-State, Newsday First Team All-Long Island and Long Island All-Star game MVP. Junior Talani Barnett had another phenomenal season for the Bay Shore Lady Marauders soccer team. She finished the season with six goals and ten assists, which earned her another spot on the All-State team. This is the second year in the row Talani has received this prestigious honor. Talani’s smooth skills, tenacity in the air and cannon of a shot made her a force to be reckoned with. Her selfless style of play and creativity helped lead the Marauders to an overall 10 wins and 5 losses. Talani was also named as one of the top 25 on Long Island and the top 50 players in New York State. She has verbally committed to Ohio State University on a soccer scholarship.

GRANT APPRECIATION - Recently, students from Bay Shore High School met with Senator Phil Boyle to thank him for providing a grant that allowed the students to study composite materials. The students used the grant to attend a program through Vaughn College. The program consisted of 2 full-day sessions and shorter after school sessions held at the Composite Prototyping Center. The students learned how to make and repair composite materials like those used to manufacture helicopter and car parts. Thank you to Senator Boyle for making this learning opportunity possible for these students!

The SOCAB was established in January 2014 as a way to enhance communication and improve collaboration with residents. It is part of Sheriff DeMarco’s overall policy of “citizen engagement” to promote ethical and responsive government representation. In addition to the SOCAB, the Sheriff hosts two other Boards – the Youth Re-entry Task Force and a Veterans Reentry Task Force. “Each one of these

initiatives engages the public on important policy matters, and gives us a network of individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise to help us innovate and think outside the box when seeking solutions to problems,” stated DeMarco. He added, “Preserving public trust in law enforcement and giving the people we serve a true stake in government are the overriding reasons we emphasize citizen engagement at the Sheriff’s Office.” Anyone interested in learning more about the SOCAB should visit the Sheriff’s Office’s website at www.suffolksheriff.com
