Classic, Jazz, Rock and Theatre Presentations Promise to Warm Up the Winter in Style Our 2014 season marks 14 years of presenting entertainment for Long Islanders at the Dix Hills Preforming Arts Center. The Long Island Community Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to Suffolk County United Veterans to help launch 24-hour, peersupported Crisis Respite and support services program for Veterans who are experiencing risk symptoms such as those associated with mental health challenges of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury. The Crisis Respite program will operate at the newly-named John J. Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank and will provide a safe milieu for Veterans experiencing distress. Such a respite can, where indicated, be instead of psychiatric hospitalization and can help bolster a connection or a plan for

Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

Max Michael Gieraltowski successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in June, 2013, officially making him the 45th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. Max’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, January 14th, 2014, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road in East Islip. Max Gieraltowski is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department,

under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” Max has served the troop as Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Scribe, and Den Chief for the Cub Scouts in Pack 38. Max is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. Max has also earned the following BSA Awards: Snorkeling BSA and Scuba BSA. Max has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a member of the contingent to the National Boy Scout Sea Base – Scuba Live Aboard Adventure in 2013, The Troop 205 Adirondack Canoe Trek in 2010, the West Point Military Academy Camporee, Troop 205 trips to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Gettysburg

and Boston. Max has also attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. The Service Project that Max conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of the Trinity Lutheran Preschool Playground benches, outdoor Xylophone, and “Musical Fence.” As Max reflects on his Scouting experience,

he recently said, “My experiences with Scouting have been vast and meaningful. Scouting’s path has definitely molded me into the person I am today, with its Scout laws influencing every action and decision I make. Scouting has also guided me in my ambitions, and choosing my career.” Max goes on to say, ”No matter where life takes me, I know that the knowledge and morals Scouting has given me will lead me to success in my education, my career, and my life.” Max is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he is ranked ninth in his graduating class for academic achievement, has been on the school’s Math Team, serving as the Secretary during the current academic year, and a member of the Math Honor Society serving as

Eagle Badge Earner current Vice President. Max has also been on the High School Academic Team and Quiz Bowl. His plan after High School will be to attend college to major in mechanical engineering. Max has also been active in music, where he is a member of the East Islip High School Wind Ensemble serving as Vice President during the current academic year, the High School Jazz Band, Pep Band and the High School Symphonic Orchestra. Community Service has been important to Max as he has logged 72.5 hours of community service, including helping at the Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry and Food Drive, Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang at St. Anne’s Church, along with working on many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205.

Max is the son of Kath and Michael Gieraltowski of Islip Terrace and brother to Life Scout and Patrol Leader and 10th grader, Harrison. Max’s father, Michael is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205.
