Hospital Association Offers Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration. The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. Woodloch Pines Launches A Series Of Initiatives To Provide Support During Its Temporarily Closure The Covid-19 crisis has hit the hospitality industry particularly hard, and Woodloch Pines, an all-inclusive family resort located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, is no exception. The property closed its doors back in mid-March with hopes to reopen on May 22, but with much still unknown, Woodloch refused to simply stand by and wait. Having been in business for 62 years, the Poconos resort has emerged triumphant from its fair share of challenges, never shying away from difficult times and always working to turn negatives into positives. Family-owned and operated since 1958, Woodloch’s core mission is built upon treating guests and staff like “company in our homes.” Although the property remains shuttered, it has been working hard to maintain the Woodloch spirit for guests, staff and the entire community in an effort to spread light in a time of darkness. Initiatives include the following: The launch of Woodloch at Home, a treasure trove of activities and games that can be accessed remotely through both the resort’s website and social media channels. Activities include tried and true guest favorites such as scavenger hunts, “Olympics,” game show and athletic contests, deejay-led dance parties and even a “Concert on the

Couch” series, featuring a diverse array of talent acts performed by both guests and employees. All programming takes place digitally so that individual families can remain in the privacy of their own homes while staying connected with Woodloch’s energetic staffers as well as each other. On March 21, The Woodloch Family gave each of its 950 hourly team members an additional week’s worth of wages to compensate them during the first week of shutdown from March 16 – 22. The Woodloch Family hosted two separate food drives, one on March 26 and the other on April 10, where they distributed over 800 care packages to staff members. These included an assortment of items such as pasta, meat, milk, eggs, juice, canned goods, toilet paper, baked goods from the resort’s in-house bakery as well as salad greens and herb bundles from the organic farm at Woodloch’s destination spa. An additional 300 packages were donated to local Pike and Wayne County food shelters. Woodloch donated all of its available N95 respirator masks to the local community hospital, Wayne Memorial. Additionally, Woodloch’s bakery distributed care packages to hospital staff, local urgent care, and local EMS on Friday, April 17. Woodloch owns and

operates a stand-alone restaurant, The Boat House, in downtown Hawley, PA, and they have been providing a free weekly meal to Pennsylvania State Police from the nearby Blooming Grove station. As part of its new program, “Goodwill Fridays,” the family resort will host charitable acts in the community every Friday during the crisis and beyond. On May 1st, Woodloch supplied four of their local volunteer fire departments with of an assortment of homemade baked goods. “Our tagline, ‘Together is the best place to be,’ has never rang more true. We are a family here at Woodloch, and that sentiment extends not only to our staff but also to our community. When bad things happen, we want to do everything we can to offer a helping hand,” said Brad Kiesendahl, C.E.O. of Woodloch Pines. “We extend our immense thanks to all of the frontline workers out there who are working tirelessly to combat this crisis. The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. Recently they received a phone call from the Public Safety at Eisenhower Park, who mentioned that a cat had been stuck in a tree for at least five days and no one was able to get it down. Soon after, the Guardians arrived and climbed over 75 feet to successfully bring the cat down to safety. They not only rescued the cat, but they are now continuing to take care of her the best they can. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the

animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” To help support Guardians of Rescue, please make a donation online at www. guardiansofrescue.org/donate. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has always valued its medical professionals who lend their medical skills and caring hearts whenever needed. Now, in the middle of the pandemic when

they are on the frontline in the fight against the coronavirus, they treasure time to just breathe. As a way to debrief, slow down, feel whole again, some of Pal-O-Mine’s nurses have turned to the horses for what has truly been transformational. Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit? “Your hands are the main transmitters of health care-acquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can

go a long way toward ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one

During this period of uncertainty, finding ways to pay bills or keep medical benefits are top concerns for many. Here are some tips from Janine Nowatzky, managing director of Inside Rx. What is unemployment insurance and how do I sign up? Unemployment insurance is a program between your state and the federal government that provides money when you’ve lost your job. With the federal government’s passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you can receive an enhanced benefit. It authorizes: • Self-employed and gig workers to receive benefits • An extra $600 a week for up to six months • An extra 13 weeks of benefits beyond what your state currently provides Each state’s rules are different. Review your state’s unemployment insurance program to learn about how to apply for benefits. Or learn more by visiting www.usa.gov/ unemployment.

How much money will I get? It will vary by state. But remember, under the CARES Act, you will be able to get an additional $600 a week for up to six months. The program’s start date was set to Jan. 27. So if you lost your job due to COVID19-related reasons between the end of January and now, then you should be able to receive the additional benefit. What about health insurance? It’s scary to think about getting through this pandemic without health insurance. What benefits you’re able to keep all depends on who you work for. The first step is to ask your employer. They may allow you to continue your health coverage for a short period of absence. If your employer is allowing you to keep your insurance, be sure to clarify if your missed premium payments will be: • Covered partially or fully by your employer • Deducted when you come back to work • Have to be paid now to continue getting insurance Your employer may also offer health care coverage through COBRA, but that can be very expensive. A limited number of states have also opened

enrollment to their own Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance exchanges. You may be able to sign up for a health insurance plan – even without a life-changing event, which is the usual exception to the standard open enrollment periods. What about prescription medications? It’s so important to keep taking your medications to stay as strong and healthy as possible. Volunteers Needed To Donate Blood Plasma To Help Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19 A Stony Brook Medicine research study is underway to determine if blood plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 can help treat hospitalized patients with active COVID-19 infection. Stony Brook is seeking coronavirus survivors to donate blood plasma and researchers are collecting the convalescent serum to use in an experimental treatment strategy in those battling the disease. Plasma, the liquid portion of the blood, which helps with clotting and supporting immunity, contains antibodies that can potentially be used to kill the virus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began allowing healthcare providers to request the use of convalescent plasma in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections on March 27. Less than a week later, on April 2, Stony Brook

University Hospital received FDA approval to offer the treatment to its patients through a randomized, controlled study (the gold standard in research) and is expected to enroll up to 500 patients from the Long Island area. The study is led by Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, MD, Medical Director of Perioperative Quality and Patient Safety and Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research and Innovation in the Renaissance School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology. To maximize the opportunity of benefit, 80 percent of patients enrolled in the trial will receive the convalescent plasma. Normally, clinical trials have a 50/50 split; 50% with treatment and 50% in the control group. “We are fast-tracking this large-scale clinical trial, as every second counts when seeking lifesaving treatment for these

critically ill patients,” said Dr. Bennett-Guerrero. “The study will assess the safety and efficacy of convalescent plasma versus standard plasma in hospitalized adult patients with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis.” Convalescent serum therapy is a century-old treatment that has been used in patients during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the diphtheria epidemic in the U.S. in the 1920s, and more recently, the Ebola outbreak in 2014. “Transferring this antibody-rich plasma into someone who is still fighting the disease may give that person the immune power to recover from the disease. This is especially important in the first several weeks of infection before one can develop high enough antibody levels to fight the virus.” “Everyone at Stony Brook is laser focused on identifying every pathway possible to help change the

course of this devastating virus,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences and Dean, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. “Having a network of physicianscientists in place allows us to contribute on both a local and global scale to accelerate the fight against COVID-19 and save lives.” Stony Brook Medicine is collaborating with Chembio Diagnostic Systems, a public company based on Long Island. Javan Esfandiari, Executive Vice President and Chief Science & Technology Officer who says Chembio is pleased that its unique and proprietary Dual Path Platform, referred to as DPP®, to separately and simultaneously detect and measure IgM and IgG antibodies, specifically to COVID-19, was the assay of choice for Stony Brook. “Our unique patented

technology uses one of our two analyzers (the MR1 and MR2) produced by Chembio, to read the test results for both IgM and IgG from finger stick blood in 15 minutes and give a numerical result related to the amount of antibody in the sample,” said Esfandiari. “This takes away the individual subjectivity of results and increases the sensitivity and specificity of the test. Chembio has now received authorization to market and sell the DPP COVID-19 IgM and IgG assay system in the US through the FDA notification process.” A Journal of the American Medical Association study of the treatment shows promise from a team of Chinese scientists describing the use of convalescent plasma in five patients with COVID-19. Now, Stony Brook physicianresearchers and researchers across the globe are looking

to answer the question of whether this therapy can successfully help flatten the curve and save lives sooner than expected.
