risp autumn air will soon be rolling in and the leaves on trees will be trading their vivid green hues for shades of orange, red and purple. Fall begins on the autumnal equinox. Although people may see it as the official kickoff to bonfires and flannels, that’s not the only interesting part of this remarkable day. • It’s a moment and not a day. Despite what many people think, the autumnal equinox is not an entire day. In fact, the equinox is a precise astronomical event. It occurs at the exact moment the sun crosses the celestial equator, an imaginary line in the sky directly above the Earth’s equator. • It’s not “equal night.” Although the word equinox comes from the www.longislandmediagroup.com

Waterfalls, Wine & Winding Roads By Kerry Mastrobuoni
T
he best trips aren’t always the ones you’ve spent months planning. They’re the ones that happen on a random morning when you decide to throw a bag in the car, cue up a great playlist and head north. That’s exactly what I did. I headed to New York’s Finger Lakes. We made Montour Falls, just outside Watkins Glen, our home base, and it didn’t take long to understand the appeal. Vineyards covered the hillsides, wooded roads wound through small towns, and waterfalls seemed to appear around every bend. One of the first places to experience it all is Watkins Glen State Park. Walking the Gorge Trail feels like stepping into a storybook. Towering rock walls surround you as the trail winds over stone staircases, through tunnels and across bridges, with waterfalls cascading alongside you and, in some places, directly above. The gorge is about 400 feet deep and features 19 www.longislandmediagroup.com
dramatic waterfalls. Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: there are 832 steps along the Gorge Trail. Yes, you read that right—832. While you’re busy admiring the waterfalls and taking it all in, your legs may have a slightly different opinion. Don’t worry, though—your camera roll will thank you later. And Watkins Glen is just the beginning. The Finger Lakes are filled with gorges, trails and places worth pulling the car over for. Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Treman State Park are just a few more to put on your list. If chasing waterfalls is your thing, you could easily build an entire getaway around them. Eventually, those winding roads lead you back to what gives the area its name: the lakes. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, as a lifelong New Yorker, I always thought there were only 5 Finger Lakes. Turns out, there are 11 major Finger Lakes, formed by glaciers as they carved deep
valleys into the landscape thousands of years ago. And they’re not all alike. Each lake has its own personality, surrounded by vineyards, farmland, charming towns, hiking trails and waterfronts. That variety is part of the fun.
That mix is what makes the area such an appealing getaway. You can hike beside a waterfall in the morning, spend the afternoon on the water, stop for a wine tasting and finish the day wandering through a small town.
Seneca Lake was a highlight for us. The largest of the Finger Lakes by volume, it reaches a depth of 618 feet, and seeing it from the water gave us a whole new appreciation for its scale. The hills and vineyards seem to stretch for miles along the shoreline.
Because sometimes the drive is part of the adventure.
Of course, where there are lakes and vineyards, there is wine—and plenty of it. With hundreds of wineries throughout the area, you won’t have to go far to find a tasting room. We visited Castel Grisch Winery, where things took a wonderfully whimsical turn with its dinosaurthemed attraction. It was quirky, playful and definitely not what I expected—a reminder that the Finger Lakes aren’t all about wine and waterfalls. There’s room here for a little imagination, too.
EDITION TWO
The best travel experiences can happen when you leave a little room for the unexpected. Take the scenic route. Stop when something catches your eye. Turn down the road that looks interesting and see where it takes you. For my nature seekers, road trippers, wine lovers and anyone looking for an escape without having to go too far, put the Finger Lakes on your compass. You’ll be glad you did. I’d love to hear from you! Share your travel tips, ideas and inspiration at Kerryscompass@ longislandmediagroup. com. Until next time, always let your compass lead you somewhere worth remembering.

Fall Offers Endless Fun
A
s summer comes to an end, fall brings plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the season. Crisp air, colorful foliage, and cooler temperatures make it an ideal time to explore everything autumn has to offer. Apple orchards and pumpkin patches are among the season's most popular destinations. Spend a day picking fresh apples, finding the perfect pumpkin, and supporting local farms. Since orchards can be muddy and some are cashonly, it's a good idea to wear comfortable shoes and bring cash.
Family-Friendly Activities For Fall
F
all is a welcome season for many people. The cooler temperatures and still-ample sunlight mean there is plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors even if summer has ended. Fall activities dot the calendar, with several different options for individuals and families to get involved. According to Acenda Integrated Health, incorporating family time into a schedule is crucial for a child’s development. It’s also key to have time to get a break from busy schedules. Fall is a great time to do just that with these activities. • Apple-picking: Few things are more refreshing than taking a bite out of an apple fresh off the tree. Orchards are bursting with apples this time of year, and an afternoon www.longislandmediagroup.com
spent picking apples is a great way to spend time together.
• Corn maze: Corn mazes may be set up adjacent to pumpkin patches, so the family can pick out the perfect pumpkin to carve and then try to navigate the maze.
• Leaf treasure hunt: Everyone can head outdoors with a bag or basket to gather leaves. Fall is also grape harvest season, making it a great time to visit local vineyards for tastings, tours, and seasonal events. If you're looking for scenic beauty, take a drive or hike to admire the brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow that transform the landscape each autumn. Many communities also celebrate the season with fairs and festivals featuring carnival rides, live entertainment, local food, craft vendors, and familyfriendly activities. Whether you're planning a weekend outing to an orchard, enjoying the changing leaves, or spending a day at a local fair, fall offers countless ways to enjoy the outdoors before winter arrives.

Within this rebrand, Woodloch Pines becomes The Pines; The Lodge at Woodloch rebrands as The Lodge; and Woodloch Springs is now The Springs. “We are elated to unveil Woodloch’s rebrand,” says Bradley Kiesendahl, owner and CEO of Woodloch Resort. “This next chapter brings a refreshed look while staying true to the experiences guests love across the family resort, the destination spa, and the golf resort. At our core, Woodloch remains a place for connection — bringing families, loved ones, and nature together in meaningful ways.” The Pines is the heart of the Woodloch experience—a warm, nostalgic family resort where connection, tradition, and joy come together. Rooted in generations of togetherness, it’s a place defined by laughter, shared moments, and a deep sense of belonging. The Pines celebrates classic family experiences, featuring days filled with play ranging from go karts to scavenger hunts and evenings surrounded by the campfire or enjoying a www.longislandmediagroup.com

Challah is a round bread symbolizing the eternal cycle of life. The bread is often dipped in honey, which symbolizes hopes for a sweet new year. • In addition to challah, people also enjoy apples dipped in honey to symbolize sweetness. • Prayers from the Mahzor are read, and three unique sets of prayers are added to the morning service during Rosh Hashanah. This includes prayers to address the sovereignty of God, presenting God as the one who remembers past deeds, and a prayer for anticipation of the future. • The sounding of the shofar is one of the most recognizable symbols of the holiday. It is a Jewish ritual horn, traditionally made from a ram’s horn.
What Is Rosh Hashanah?
T
he arrival of a new year is celebrated each January 1. But that’s not the only fresh start people celebrate each year. Within the Jewish community, a new year is celebrated months before the first day of January. Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday, the name of which translates to “head of the year.” Rosh Hashanah is celebrated at the beginning of the month of Tishrei, which is the
S
seventh month of the Jewish calendar year, according to My Jewish Learning. Much like the New Year celebrated in January, Rosh Hashanah is both a time to rejoice and reflect. Many people celebrate the completion of another year by taking stock of their lives and what they can do in the coming year to improve their lives, the community and the world. Jews celebrate Rosh Hashanah as a time for prayer, self-

ome people may notice a day when people who adhere to the Jewish faith gather around bodies of water and seem to throw bread, a sight that may spark curiosity. This is a tradition that takes place during Rosh Hashanah. Tossing bread or crumbs of bread into water is part of the Jewish ritual of “Tashlich,” which is a symbolic act occurring on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Tashlich means “casting off” in Hebrew. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year when the faithful symbolically cleanse themselves of sins and other transgressions. Tossing the bread or crumbs away is symbolic of that cleansing. This helps start the new year on fresh footing.

reflection and repentance. Rosh Hashanah is widely observed by Jews throughout the world, many of whom pray and reflect in a synagogue during the holiday. The organization Reform Judaism says observances also include certain customs that take place at home. Here are some notable components of Rosh Hashanah. • Rosh Hashanah is a two-day observance that ushers in a ten-day period of repentance known as the Days of Awe. That period culminates on Yom Kippur, which is known as the Day of Atonement.
• Another popular tradition associated with Rosh Hashanah is a ceremony that occurs on the afternoon of the first day. People throw crumbs or pieces of bread into flowing water, symbolizing their sins. Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday in the Jewish religion. It marks the beginning of a new, and hopefully sweet, new year.
• Although Rosh Hashanah is believed to have originated in biblical times, the Bible does not refer to a “new year” or “day of judgement.” • Challah is traditionally eaten on Rosh Hashanah.

Pecans Tweak The Flavor Profile Of A Beloved Baked Good When it comes to baked goods, it’s hard to deny the appeal of a homemade brownie. Whether eaten on their own or paired with ice cream, brownies are a welcome treat that few can resist. Though chocolate dominates the flavor profile of brownies, these beloved treats can be enhanced with additional delicious ingredients, like pecans. Anyone who wants to throw a little extra flavor into their next batch of brownies can consider this recipe for “Pecan Brownies” from Lines+Angles. Directions: 1. Heat the oven to 325 F. Grease a 7” x 11” rectangular baking dish and line the base with non-stick baking paper. 2. Put the chocolate and butter in a pan and heat gently, stirring until melted. Allow to cool slightly. 3. Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl until pale and frothy, add the sugar, a spoonful at a time, whisk until thick and glossy. 4. Gently fold in the melted chocolate mixture. Sift in the flour, baking powder, and salt, then fold in the pecans. 5. Spoon the mixture into the baking dish, level with the back of a spoon, and bake for 40 minutes, until the top has a cracked appearance and the center is still a little soft to the touch. Do not overbake, or you will lose the famous sticky brownie texture. Cool in the pan.

• Mind the habitat. Anytime you hike you should be mindful of the natural settings around you. Stick to the trails so you do not disturb delicate vegetation. Also, never feed wild animals. They can grow accustomed to an easy hand-out and lose their fear of humans, putting themselves at risk of harm. Remember to dispose of trash properly and always take out what you bring in.
