Ferretti To Host Long Island’s Largest Memorial Ceremony Marking 25th Anniversary of 9/11

Hempstead Town To Join 9/11 Families, Police, Firefighters To Remember Lives Lost And Recognize Those Still Fighting Ground Zero-Related Illnesses

Supervisor John Ferretti and the Hempstead Town Board hosted last year’s ceremony, bringing the community together for a meaningful commemoration. by ReWorld and Stop and Shop of West Hempstead – into the waters of the Atlantic in memory of the ones they lost. Attendees will be welcomed to Point Lookout by patriotic American flag arches provided courtesy of the Levittown, Franklin Square and Munson, Merrick, Island Park, Point Lookout-Lido, and West Hempstead fire departments. The color guard will be provided by the Rockville Centre Fire Department, led by bagpiper Bobby Hughes of the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and

Drums. The Gregorian Consortium from Kellenberg Memorial High School, which has been a longtime participant in the ceremony, will return for this year’s event. Remarks will offered by Rev. Michael Duffy, Rector at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, and other distinguished guests. The keynote speaker of this year’s event will be Garden City South resident Dorine Hetzel-Dand. Dorine lost her husband, volunteer firefighter Christopher Dand,

to a 9/11-related illness in 2024, and her brother, Thomas Hetzel, a member of the FDNY, who was killed on September 11, 2001 while saving lives at the World Trade Center. Closing out the ceremony will be Rev. Dr. Eric C. Mallette of the Greater Second Baptist Church in Freeport, who has offered powerful and inspirational remarks for many years at this event. At the conclusion of the ceremony, guests will be invited to cast white carnations into the Atlantic Ocean, write messages on the Remembrance Wall, followed by post-event visit to the Town’s adjacent 9/11 Memorial Park. The park features an elevated memorial walkway with the names of the victims of the terrorist attacks (including those who have died in recent years from 9/11-related illnesses) memorialized in granite on the edifice of a pedestrian bridge. The Town will provide paper and pencils so residents can conduct “name rubbings” of their beloved friends and family members. The memorial also includes a 30-foot-tall beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and a giant memorial table inscribed with Walt Whitman’s “On the Beach at Night.” “For the families of 9/11 victims, no passage of time will ever be enough to heal the pain of losing loved ones in such a tragic and devastating way,” concluded Supervisor Ferretti. “The Town of Hempstead will Never Forget the victims of September 11th, and we will always gather at Town Park Point Lookout to honor them for generations to come.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Town Animal Shelter is hosting ‘free adoption month’ where all general adoption fees will be waived throughout the month of September. “I invite and encourage residents looking for their new best friend to look no further than the Town Animal Shetler, where all adoptions are free all through September,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion.” During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Town To Collect DVDs For Troops & Children’s Hospitals

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board have announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted during the month of September and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster

Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes for our Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all

around the world and continues to do so today. Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals. Tanger Outlets Deer Park and Tanger Outlets Riverhead announced that its annual TangerKids Grants Program will return for the 2026/27 academic year, continuing its commitment to supporting local education and providing resources that help students thrive. Educators on Long Island are encouraged to apply for funding at grants.tanger. com through Oct. 18. The TangerKids Grants Program gives teachers and education leaders across the country the opportunity to identify classroom and

school needs and request funding for programs that support student success. Grants may be used for initiatives that enhance learning environments, improve accessibility, address student needs and provide additional resources for schools and classrooms. Faculty members at public and private schools serving pre-K through grade 12 students are eligible to apply. For 30 years, Tanger has invested in education by providing more than $3.9 million in grants to schools and educational programs

across the communities it serves through 38 outlet centers and four open-air lifestyle centers. In 2025, TangerKids Grants awarded an estimated $200,000 to initiatives throughout the U.S. and Canada, with a focus on supporting inclusive classroom environments, underserved schools and programs that address evolving student needs. Grant winners for 2026 in each community will be announced and celebrated during the center’s annual TangerKids Day in January 2027.

We made Montour Falls, just outside Watkins Glen, our home base, and it didn’t take long to understand the appeal. Vineyards covered the hillsides, wooded roads wound through small towns, and waterfalls seemed to appear around every bend. One of the first places to experience it all is Watkins Glen State Park. Walking the Gorge Trail feels like stepping into a storybook. Towering rock walls surround you as the trail winds over stone staircases, through tunnels and across bridges, with waterfalls cascading alongside you and, in some places, directly above. The gorge is about 400 feet deep and features 19 dramatic waterfalls. Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: there are 832 steps along the Gorge Trail. Yes, you read that right—832. While you’re busy admiring the waterfalls and taking it all in, your legs may have a slightly different opinion. Don’t worry, though—your camera roll will thank you later. And Watkins Glen is just the beginning. The Finger Lakes are filled with gorges, trails and places worth pulling the car over for. Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Treman State Park are just a few more to put on your list. If chasing waterfalls is your thing, you could easily build an entire getaway around them.

Eventually, those winding roads lead you back to what gives the area its name: the lakes.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, as a lifelong New Yorker, I always thought

Seneca Lake was a highlight for us. The largest of the Finger Lakes by volume, it reaches a depth of 618 feet, and seeing it from the water gave us a whole new appreciation for its scale. The hills and vineyards seem to stretch for miles along the shoreline. Of course, where there are lakes and vineyards, there is wine—and plenty of it. With hundreds of wineries throughout the area, you won’t have to go far to find a tasting room. We visited Castel Grisch Winery, where things took a wonderfully whimsical turn with its dinosaur-themed attraction. It was quirky, playful and definitely not what I expected—a reminder that the Finger Lakes aren’t all about wine and waterfalls. There’s room here for a little imagination, too. That mix is what makes the area such an appealing getaway. You can hike beside a waterfall in the morning, spend the afternoon on the water, stop for a wine tasting and finish the day wandering through a small town. Because sometimes the drive is part of the adventure. The best travel experiences can happen when you leave a little room for the unexpected. Take the scenic route. Stop when something catches your eye. Turn down the road that looks interesting and see where it takes you. For my nature seekers, road trippers, wine lovers and anyone looking for an escape without having to go too far, put the Finger Lakes on your compass. You’ll be glad you did.
