Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the Town of Babylon will gather at Cedar Beach on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. for its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony — and, for the first time, will unveil a permanent memorial to those whose lives were claimed in the years that followed. The new Post-9/11 Memorial recognizes residents who became ill or died as a result of their service and exposure in the aftermath of the attacks. Fourteen names are inscribed on the memorial at its dedication. “September 11th did not end when that day was over,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “For too many families in our community, the years that followed brought illness, loss, and a sacrifice that has gone unmarked for far too long. he best trips aren’t always the ones you’ve spent months planning. They’re the ones that happen on a random morning when you decide to throw a bag in the car, cue up a great playlist and head north. That’s exactly what I did. I headed to New York’s Finger Lakes. We made Montour Falls, just outside Watkins Glen, our home base, and it didn’t take long to understand the appeal. Vineyards covered the hillsides, wooded roads wound through small towns, and waterfalls seemed to appear around every bend. One of the ﬁrst places to experience it all is Watkins Glen State Park. Walking the Gorge Trail feels like stepping into a storybook. Towering rock walls surround you as the trail winds over stone staircases, through tunnels and across bridges, with waterfalls cascading alongside you and, in some places, directly above. The gorge is about 400 feet deep and features 19 dramatic waterfalls. Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: there are 832 steps along the Gorge Trail. Yes, you read that right—832. While you’re busy admiring the waterfalls and taking it all in, your legs may have a slightly different opinion. Don’t worry, though—your camera roll will thank you later. And Watkins Glen is just the beginning. The Finger Lakes are ﬁlled with gorges, trails and places worth pulling the car over for. Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Treman State Park are just a few more to put on your list. If chasing waterfalls is your thing, you could easily build an entire getaway around them. Eventually, those winding roads lead you back to what gives the area its name: the lakes. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, as a lifelong New Yorker, I always thought

there were only 5 Finger Lakes. Turns out, there are 11 major Finger Lakes, formed by glaciers as they carved deep valleys into the landscape thousands of years ago. And they’re not all alike. Each lake has its own personality, surrounded by vineyards, farmland, charming towns, hiking trails and waterfronts. That variety is part of the fun. Seneca Lake was a highlight for us. The largest of the Finger Lakes by volume, it reaches a depth of 618 feet, and seeing it from the water gave us a whole new appreciation for its scale. The hills and vineyards seem to stretch for miles along the shoreline.

Pastor Marc Herbst and St. John’s Lutheran Church recently hosted a special ceremony to bless and dedicate their new van! The church will use this van to distribute food and goods for their food pantry service in the Lindenhurst community. Suffolk County Legislator RJ Renna and his staff

Of course, where there are lakes and vineyards, there is wine—and plenty of it. With hundreds of wineries throughout the area, you won’t have to go far to find a tasting room. We visited Castel Grisch Winery, where things took a wonderfully whimsical turn with its dinosaur-themed attraction. It was quirky, playful and definitely not what I expected—a reminder that the Finger Lakes aren’t all about wine and waterfalls. There’s room here for a little imagination, too. That mix is what makes the area such an appealing getaway. You can hike beside a waterfall in the morning, spend the afternoon on the water, stop for a wine tasting and finish the day wandering through a small town.

The Village of Lindenhurst will hold its annual “Lindenhurst Remembers” Candlelight Memorial Service on Friday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Remembers 9/11 Memorial Garden in Village Park, located at the corner of Byrd Street and Irmisch Avenue. This year’s ceremony will carry special significance as the community commemorates the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. In addition to the annual memorial service, the Village will host a special Candlelight Walk before the ceremony. Members of the public are invited to gather at 6:00 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Village Square Park Gazebo, located at the

corner of South Wellwood Avenue and East Hoffman Avenue, for prayers and music. At approximately 6:30 p.m., participants will begin the candlelight procession to the

Memorial Garden. The walk will proceed north on South Wellwood Avenue, then east on Dover Street to Irmisch Avenue and the Lindenhurst Remembers 9/11 Memorial Garden. The Candlelight Memorial Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Garden, providing the community with an opportunity to come together to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, as well as the first responders, volunteers, families, and all those whose lives were forever changed by the tragic events. The Village of Lindenhurst encourages residents and members of the community to join together for this solemn 25th anniversary commemoration.

Embracing Change By JoAnn Cilla Ask ten people what AuNothing during the year says “change” more than when the calendar flips from August to September. The flip affects almost every family and every local business, and it happens every year. It begs the question: why do so many of us resist it, as if we could stop time or our calendars? It’s because we like our routines! We like knowing what to expect during the week and on the weekends. But change has a way of showing up regardless of our readiness, and the folks who tend to come out ahead are the ones who meet it with curiosity instead of dread…kinda like the “Sunday JOANN CILLA Scaries.” To the parents whose kids are heading to school for the first time…or maybe it’s their first time at a new school, your nerves are doing their job. But you will handle whatever comes up with steadiness because you want your kids to handle change the same way, and they are watching you. A calm goodbye at the bus stop teaches more than any pep talk ever could. To the kids heading into a new classroom, a new grade, or a new group of friends: everyone in that building felt exactly what you’re feeling right now. Give yourself the same chance to be new at something that you’d give a friend. The discomfort won’t last forever! And to our local business owners, the ones who make our town feel like home rather than a place people pass through on their way to the beach: you already know that change is the cost of staying relevant. The shop that adjusts its hours, offers new products and services, or finally sets up that online order system is making sure to stay new and relevant for its customers. None of us gets a preview of what this school year or this season will bring. What we do get is a choice in how we meet it. Let’s welcome what comes next and embrace change. Help Keep Our Creeks Clean Village of Lindenhurst Officials have voiced concern over the amount of debris and pollutants in and along our creeks and storm drainage systems. This on-going problem, of all types of debris, such as plastic containers, aluminum cans, glass bottles, Styrofoam, branches, grass, and leaves, entering the creeks, causes blockage and flow issues for storm water moving along the creeks, into the canals, and to the Great South Bay. When we get one of those heavy rain storms that dumps several inches of rain in an hour or so, the storm water becomes an issue. Our creeks and streams can fill up very quickly, and the presence of debris causes problems with the proper flow of the water, which leads to major flooding problems on our roadways and adjacent properties. While our Village DPW routinely checks the creeks for debris, we can all help prevent our creeks from backing up in certain storms by not throwing leaves, branches,

grass clippings, debris, and garbage into the creek. Here are some tips you can take to keep the creek clean of debris: - Grass clippings & leaves should not be thrown, raked, or blown into the creek. Residents are encouraged to collect grass clippings/rake-up leaves, bag them, and place them in front of their homes for scheduled Village pick-up (Wednesdays). - Do not trim trees, shrubs, or bushes and throw the branches into the creek. - Pick up garbage and litter around your property so that it does not collect in the creek. Please, also be reminded that there are laws against littering and polluting, and anyone caught illegally dumping into our waterways will face possible fines and legal action.
