Free Waterfront Festival & Outdoor Concert At TOBAY Beach On September 13th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced a Free Waterfront Festival and Outdoor Concert will take place on Sunday, September 13th at TOBAY Beach Marina. This familyfun day will feature marine and outdoor exhibits, a children’s snapper derby, police boat demonstrations, food concessions and a free concert featuring Captain Cool Band with yacht rockin’ hits. The festival will run from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. “The Town is thrilled to offer a free day of family-fun and live

music at TOBAY Beach. Bring your family to Waterfront Festival for a great outdoor concert, educational exhibits and foods and drinks as the summer ends,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This free festival also provides a great opportunity to introduce children to recreational sport of fishing, as all equipment will be provided along with professional assistance and guidance.” The Town of Oyster Bay Free Waterfront Festival and Concert is presented by Optimum and made possible through the following

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. An analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Town Animal Shelter is hosting ‘free adoption month’ where all general adoption fees will be waived throughout the month of September. “I invite and encourage residents looking for their new best friend to look no further than the Town Animal Shetler, where all adoptions are free all through September,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion.” During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an

appointment, visit the Town’s Facebook page, or Town website at www.oysterbaytown.com. “Most shelter pets wind up there through no fault of their own, often for a reason their owners are faced with, and are

already housetrained and familiar living in family settings,” said Councilwoman Maier. “As someone who welcomed a shelter pet into my home several years ago, I can speak firsthand about how much they appreciate a second chance and the unconditional love they provide.” In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on Saturday, September 19th from 10 am to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee. The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The shelter is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Residents interested in visiting the shelter can call to make an appointment. Waterfalls, Wine & Winding Roads

By Kerry Mastrobuoni he best trips aren’t always the ones you’ve spent months planning. They’re the ones that happen on a random morning when you decide to throw a bag in the car, cue up a great playlist and head north. That’s exactly what I did. I headed to New York’s Finger Lakes. We made Montour Falls, just outside Watkins Glen, our home base, and it didn’t take long to understand the appeal. Vineyards covered the hillsides, wooded roads wound through small towns, and waterfalls seemed to appear around every bend. One of the ﬁrst places to experience it all is Watkins Glen State Park. Walking the Gorge Trail feels like stepping into a storybook. Towering rock walls surround you as the trail winds over stone staircases, through tunnels and across bridges, with waterfalls cascading alongside you and, in some places, directly above. The gorge is about 400 feet deep and features 19 dramatic waterfalls. Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: there are 832 steps along the Gorge Trail. Yes, you read that right—832. While you’re busy admiring the waterfalls and taking it all in, your legs may have a slightly different opinion. Don’t worry, though—your camera roll will thank you later. And Watkins Glen is just the beginning. The Finger Lakes are ﬁlled with gorges, trails and places worth pulling the car over for. Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Treman State Park are just a few more to put on your list. If chasing waterfalls is your thing, you could easily build an entire getaway around them. Eventually, those winding roads lead you back to what gives the area its name: the lakes.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, as a lifelong New Yorker, I always thought

there were only 5 Finger Lakes. Turns out, there are 11 major Finger Lakes, formed by glaciers as they carved deep valleys into the landscape thousands of years ago. And they’re not all alike. Each lake has its own personality, surrounded by vineyards, farmland, charming towns, hiking trails and waterfronts. That variety is part of the fun. Seneca Lake was a highlight for us. The largest of the Finger Lakes by volume, it reaches a depth of 618 feet, and seeing it from the water gave us a whole new appreciation for its scale. The hills and vineyards seem to stretch for miles along the shoreline. Of course, where there are lakes and vineyards, there is wine—and plenty of it. With hundreds of wineries throughout the area, you won’t have to go far to find a tasting room. We visited Castel Grisch Winery, where things took a wonderfully whimsical turn with its dinosaur-themed attraction. It was quirky, playful and definitely not what I expected—a reminder that the Finger Lakes aren’t all about wine and waterfalls. There’s room here for a little imagination, too. That mix is what makes the area such an appealing getaway. You can hike beside a waterfall in the morning, spend the afternoon on the water, stop for a wine tasting and finish the day wandering through a small town. Because sometimes the drive is part of the adventure. The best travel experiences can happen when you leave a little room for the unexpected. Take the scenic route. Stop when something catches your eye. Turn down the road that looks interesting and see where it takes you. For my nature seekers, road trippers, wine lovers and anyone looking for an escape without having to go too far, put the Finger Lakes on your compass. You’ll be glad you did. Here are some notable components of Rosh Hashanah. • Rosh Hashanah is a two-day observance that ushers in a ten-day

period of repentance known as the Days of Awe. That period culminates on Yom Kippur, which is known as the Day of Atonement. • Although Rosh Hashanah is believed to have originated in biblical times, the Bible does not refer to a “new year” or “day of judgement.” • Challah is traditionally eaten on Rosh Hashanah. Challah is a round bread symbolizing the eternal cycle of life. The bread is often dipped in honey, which symbolizes hopes for a sweet new year. • In addition to challah, people also enjoy apples

dipped in honey to symbolize sweetness. • Prayers from the Mahzor are read, and three unique sets of prayers are added to the morning service during Rosh Hashanah. This includes prayers to address the sovereignty of God, presenting God as the one who remembers past deeds, and a prayer for anticipation of the future. • The sounding of the shofar is one of the most recognizable symbols of the holiday. It is a Jewish ritual horn, traditionally made from a ram’s horn.
