Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the Town of Babylon will gather at Cedar Beach on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. for its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony — and, for the first time, will unveil a permanent memorial to those whose lives were claimed in the years that followed. The new Post-9/11 Memorial recognizes residents who became ill or died as a result of their service and exposure in the aftermath of the attacks. Fourteen names are inscribed on the memorial at its dedication. “September 11th did not end when that day was over,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “For too many families in our community, the years that followed brought illness, loss, and a sacrifice that has gone unmarked for far too long. he best trips aren’t always the ones you’ve spent months planning. They’re the ones that happen on a random morning when you decide to throw a bag in the car, cue up a great playlist and head north. That’s exactly what I did. I headed to New York’s Finger Lakes. We made Montour Falls, just outside Watkins Glen, our home base, and it didn’t take long to understand the appeal. Vineyards covered the hillsides, wooded roads wound through small towns, and waterfalls seemed to appear around every bend. One of the ﬁrst places to experience it all is Watkins Glen State Park. Walking the Gorge Trail feels like stepping into a storybook. Towering rock walls surround you as the trail winds over stone staircases, through tunnels and across bridges, with waterfalls cascading alongside you and, in some places, directly above. The gorge is about 400 feet deep and features 19 dramatic waterfalls. Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: there are 832 steps along the Gorge Trail. Yes, you read that right—832. While you’re busy admiring the waterfalls and taking it all in, your legs may have a slightly different opinion. Don’t worry, though—your camera roll will thank you later. And Watkins Glen is just the beginning. The Finger Lakes are ﬁlled with gorges, trails and places worth pulling the car over for. Buttermilk Falls, Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Treman State Park are just a few more to put on your list. If chasing waterfalls is your thing, you could easily build an entire getaway around them. Eventually, those winding roads lead you back to what gives the area its name: the lakes. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, as a lifelong New Yorker, I always thought

there were only 5 Finger Lakes. Turns out, there are 11 major Finger Lakes, formed by glaciers as they carved deep valleys into the landscape thousands of years ago. And they’re not all alike. Each lake has its own personality, surrounded by vineyards, farmland, charming towns, hiking trails and waterfronts. That variety is part of the fun. Seneca Lake was a highlight for us. The largest of the Finger Lakes by volume, it reaches a depth of 618 feet, and seeing it from the water gave us a whole new appreciation for its scale. The hills and vineyards seem to stretch for miles along the shoreline. Of course, where there are lakes and vineyards, there is wine—and plenty of it. With hundreds of wineries throughout the area, you won’t have to go far to find a tasting room. We visited Castel Grisch Winery, where things took a wonderfully whimsical turn with its dinosaur-themed attraction. It was quirky, playful and definitely not what I expected—a reminder that the Finger Lakes aren’t all about wine and waterfalls. There’s room here for a little imagination, too. That mix is what makes the area such an appealing getaway. You can hike beside a waterfall in the morning, spend the afternoon on the water, stop for a wine tasting and finish the day wandering through a small town.

What Is Rosh Hashanah? The arrival of a new year is celebrated each January 1. But that’s not the only fresh start people celebrate each year. Within the Jewish community, a new year is celebrated months before the first day of January.

Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish holiday, the name of which translates to “head of the year.” Rosh Hashanah is celebrated at the beginning of the month of Tishrei, which is the seventh month of the Jewish calendar year,

according to My Jewish Learning. Much like the New Year celebrated in January, Rosh Hashanah is both a time to rejoice and reflect. Many people celebrate the completion of another year by taking stock of their lives

and what they can do in the coming year to improve their lives, the community and the world. Jews celebrate Rosh Hashanah as a time for prayer, self-reflection and repentance. Rosh Hashanah is widely observed by Jews throughout the world, many of whom pray and reflect in a synagogue during the holiday. The organization Reform Judaism says observances also include certain customs that take place at home. Here are some notable components of Rosh Hashanah. • Rosh Hashanah is a two-day observance that ushers in a ten-day period of repentance known as the Days of Awe. That period culminates on Yom Kippur, which is known as the Day of Atonement. • Although Rosh Hashanah is believed to have originated

in biblical times, the Bible does not refer to a “new year” or “day of judgement.” • Challah is traditionally eaten on Rosh Hashanah. Challah is a round bread symbolizing the eternal cycle of life. The troop’s original trailer, which was used to transport equipment, support scouting activities and community events, and store essential supplies, was stolen in July. The loss left the Scouts without an important resource they relied on throughout the year. Members of the Town of Babylon community recently gathered to celebrate the troop’s new trailer, generously donated by Sal Mangano, Mangano Family Funeral Homes, and Mangano Family Florist. The brand-new 2026 trailer will allow the Scouts to transport their equipment once again and continue participating in community service projects, scouting activities, and events throughout the Town of Babylon. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer praised the Mangano family for stepping up when the Scouts needed the community most. “This is a perfect example of what makes the Town of Babylon such a special place to live. When one of our community organizations faces a setback, our residents and local businesses step up to help. We are incredibly grateful to Sal Mangano and the entire Mangano family for this generous donation and for supporting our young people.” Councilman DuWayne Gregory also thanked Mangano for his generosity and commitment to the community. “Boy Scout Troop 2014 does so much for our community, and they should never have had to worry about replacing a trailer that was stolen. Sal Mangano saw an opportunity to help and didn’t hesitate. This generous donation is about much more than a trailer—it’s about investing in our Scouts and showing them that their community stands behind them.” Mangano said the decision to donate the trailer was an easy one. “When we heard what happened to Troop 2014 and that their trailer had been stolen, we knew we wanted to do something to help. These young men and women give their time to our community, and we are proud to give something back to them. We hope this trailer allows the troop to continue doing the great work they’ve been doing for many years.” The presentation was attended by numerous elected officials and community leaders, along with members of the Suffolk County Police Department, who came together to thank Mangano personally for his generosity and support of the Scouts. The event served as another reminder of the strong relationship between local businesses, residents, law enforcement, and elected officials throughout the Town of Babylon. For Troop 2014, however, the biggest takeaway was simple: after losing something important, their community made sure they were not left behind. The new trailer will now help the Scouts get back on the road and continue their mission of service, leadership, and community involvement. “When a community comes together, great things happen,” was the sentiment echoed throughout the event.
