Peter Daniele of Lindenhurst was named Firefighter of the Year for Suffolk County Legislator R.J. Renna’s 14th Legislative District during the annual Volunteer Firefighter Recognition Ceremony on Sept. 16. A member of the West Babylon Fire Department for 15 years, Daniele was honored for rescuing an unresponsive victim from a burning home in January 2025. He will receive the Suffolk County Vocational Education and Extension Board Class 1 Medal later this year.

Legislator Renna Names Peter Daniele As Firefighter Of The Year On Wednesday, September 16, the Suffolk County Legislature gathered for the annual Volunteer Firefighter Recognition Ceremony in the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium of the William H. Rogers Legislature Building. Legislator Renna was proud to select Peter Daniele as the Firefighter of the Year for the 14th Legislative District! On the night of January 9, 2025, Peter’s knowledge and training were put to the test when he detected an odor of burning consistent with a structure fire while driving home. He investigated the odor and subsequently discovered a working residential structure fire. As he arrived on scene, Peter received reports that the elderly residents of the home may still be inside the dwelling. Without hesitation, Peter immediately entered the home, where he encountered heavy smoke and a wellinvolved fire. Despite these hazards, Peter located an unresponsive victim on the floor. Operating in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life and health, without firefighting gear or respiratory protection, he removed the victim from the structure. The victim

Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta announced that the 2026 Long Island Columbus Day Parade, presented by the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, will take place in the Town of Babylon on Saturday, October 10. The celebration begins with a ceremony at noon at the Deer Park Lake Avenue Firehouse, followed by the

parade at 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The parade will step off along Deer Park Avenue and Lake Avenue and continue to the Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211, 2075 Deer Park Avenue. It will bring together Sons and Daughters of Italy lodges from across Long Island, along with Italian-American and local

community organizations, to celebrate the cultural contributions and heritage of Italian-Americans. “We are proud to once again host the Long Island Columbus Day Parade,” said Councilman Manetta, an honorary chairman of the parade. “The Town of Babylon is home to one of the largest ItalianAmerican communities on Long Island. This

is a special day for our community to come together and celebrate our shared heritage, history, and traditions.” Arthur Spera, State President of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, added, “We are honored to bring our annual parade back to the Town of Babylon and thank

the Town for its continued hospitality and support. This event celebrates Italian-American culture and brings together families, businesses, and organizations from across Long Island.” After the parade, festivities continue at the Constantino Brumidi Lodge with food trucks,

Fun Facts About Lefties Left-handed, lefty, southpaw - these are all terms used to describe people who favor their left hands for writing, throwing a ball and myriad other activities. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 percent of all people are left-handed. Although that makes southpaws an undeniable minority, the number of lefthanded people is creeping up. Sports Proclivity Being left-handed may confer an advantage for athletes. Wayne Gretzky, Sandy Koufax and Martina Navratilova are just a

few of the many accomplished left-handed sports legends. Sports scientist Florian Loffing with the Institute of Sport Science, University of Oldenburg in Germany found that in sports where there is a short time constraint, lefties appeared to excel. That could be why he found 26 percent of the top male players in table tennis are lefties. And sports like baseball and cricket are dominated by lefthanded players. Health Risks And Benefits According to a 2010 study

published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found those who were left-handed had an increased risk for dyslexia, ADHD and certain mood disorders. It could be tied to the hemispheres of the brain and how 30 percent of left-handed people are partial to the right hemisphere or have no dominant hemisphere for language functioning. Conversely, lefties can bounce back from stroke or other brainrelated injuries more readily than righties, according to data

published in 2015 in Scientific Reports. A study published in Laterality found that left-handed people are less likely to suffer arthritis and ulcers. More Creative Lefties are more likely to be artistic or innovative. Research published in the American Journal of Psychology found there is some evidence that left-handed people are better at divergent thinking, a method of idea generation that explores many possible solutions. The Left-Handers Club, a pro-lefty

advocacy group, also found that left-handed individuals tend to be drawn to careers in the arts, music, sports, and informationtechnology fields. Ambidextrous Inclinations The world is geared towards being right-handed, with buttons on jackets, doorknobs, desks in school, and more designed with right-handed people in mind. Therefore, many lefties become ambidextrous simply because they have to, according to data published in Reader’s Digest.
