On 9/11 Anniversary, Seaford Continues Pledge To Always Remember

From the large American flag draped from a Seaford Fire Department ladder truck to the field of flags on the front lawn to the miniature flags clutched in hands, there was a strong showing of unity and patriotism at Seaford High School on Sept. 11 as more than 1,000 people came together to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The ceremony, hosted by the Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee in partnership with the Seaford School District, continued a quarter-century tradition in the community to honor

the five Seaford High School alumni killed in the attacks – Timothy Haskell, Thomas Haskell, John Perry, Robert Sliwak and Michael Wittenstein – as well as victims that day and since from 9/11-related illnesses. Following the presentation of colors from the Nassau County Police Department, Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance before the Seaford High School marching band played the National Anthem. Speakers included Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, former

Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee President Kenneth Haskell, brother of Thomas and Timothy Haskell, spoke about the importance of attending the ceremony every year in honor of all those who died as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks.

I’m going to ask you to keep your promise to never forget. Never forget those heroes. Never forget the

people who ran towards danger.” Congressman King noted that Seaford continues to maintain one of the largest turnouts of any 9/11 ceremony. “It means so much and shows the spirit of the Seaford community,” he said. “We’re Americans; we stand together as one. We did it on Sept. 11, we did it

on Sept. 12, and we have to do it as far into the future as we see.” Several past recipients of the Patriot Award were in attendance for a presentation that included service pledges from Seaford students and a $2,000 donation to offset costs for seniors to take a trip to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Manhattan. Among them

was 2026 graduate Michelle Evangelista, who shared the history and meaning of Seaford’s 9/11 memorial in front of the high school. Bells were tolled in honor of the five Seaford alumni and all victims, as well as other special intentions, and the Seaford High School chorus performed “God Bless America” to close out the ceremony.

A plain brick wall outside Seaford High School is now more colorful and more spirited with the addition of a new mural celebrating the 10 traits of the Seaford Scholars Profile. The piece was created by a student art club, the Muralists. At 12 feet long and 8 feet tall, the mural adorns a wall near the school’s Renaissance entrance, so it is seen by many students and staff as they arrive each day. It was commissioned by the high school’s Seaford Scholars Committee. Students painted the mural in June on three large composite boards and it was hung over the summer. Artists who worked on the mural included Class of 2026 graduate Autumn Feitzinger, current seniors Ace Gerace, Hayden Lowinger, Gianna Price-Longo and Justine Zheng, and sophomore Matthew Long. It features an image of a ship’s wheel, a lighthouse and five boats on the water that each

represent two of the traits. For example, a boat with a smiling dragon head symbolizes “humorous” because of its whimsical design and “resilience” as dragons represent strength. Justine noted that the symbols and imagery not only connect to the Seaford Scholar traits, but also to Long Island’s geography and climate. The four shades of green for the water, she noted, is an homage to the four seasons. The mural was primarily designed by Justine with support from Ace. Muralists adviser Melinda McKee then coordinated with Seaford Scholars Committee member Laura Heller, as well as school and district administration, to finalize the plan before students began painting. From conception to finished product, the process took nearly a year. “To create something that is going to be on view for the entire community is

design of the mural and its placement near the main entrance tells students they are about the enter a beautiful place, where they

and see the mural. “I’m very proud of it. It came together really well and I think it’s an accurate portrayal of the message we want to convey.”

Long Island Hiking Trails Great For The Fall

Bethpage State Park, Farmingdale Bethpage State Park is on the border of Nassau and Suffolk County. Bethpage State Park is most known for golf and has hosted several national championships. There are many trails of varying lengths, perfect for leisurely hikes or biking. The park is at 99 Quaker Meeting House Road in Farmingdale.

Sands Point Sands Point Preserve is filled with local history and scenic vistas. Sands Point Preserve has several different areas available for hiking. This includes a mile-long beach as well as forays into the woods. Sands Point Preserve is at 127 Middle Neck Road in Sands Point.

Park is located at Eagle Ave. in West Hempstead. Sunken Meadow State Park, King’s Park Sunken Meadow State Park is one of Long Island’s most wellknown hiking and beach spots. The three-mile waterfront is a beloved hiking area both for its views as well as the variety of the nearby terrain. Connected to the Long Island Sound with views of Connecticut. The most popular trail will take hikers nearly four miles through the local wildlife. Sunken Meadow State Park is located at New York State Reference Rte 908K, Kings Park.

Hempstead Lake State Park, West Hempstead

Hempstead Lake State Park is a great destination for hikers. The area’s natural beauty and relaxed trails make it a perfect spot for waterside hiking. Fifth graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School are ready to read. On Sept. 9, students in each class took part in a book tasting to inform their reading choices for the next several weeks. Students were given stacks of books from their classroom libraries and encouraged to read the summaries and few pages of ones that looked appealing. Each pile contained a mix of fiction and nonfiction books, representing different authors and genres. Fifth graders then reviewed and rated the choices to select books for

their independent reading. Teacher Mackenzie Hickey said the goal was for students to find “just right” books. She wants students reading books that are interesting and relatable, and not too difficult but challenging enough to help them grow as readers. The ability to find the right book is a life skill, she added, such as when they are visiting a library or browsing at a book store. Samantha Mahan gave her students about 10 minutes with each book to help them craft their rankings. In addition to independent reading time

in class, students also take books home where they are expected to read each night for 30 minutes and complete a short response based on prompts relating to story elements. The book selections ranged from decadesold stories like “The Baby-Sitters Club and “Charlotte’s Web” to more modern choices like the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “I Survived” series. Teachers said the nonfiction “Who Was” books are also popular, helping students learn about influential figures of the past and present.

Lazy, hazy days likely filled the calendar, with time spent poolside or at a beach. Just because summer is winding down doesn’t mean that all the relaxing fun must cease. Fairs and carnivals offer an assortment of entertainment all under one roof (or tent). In fact, many people live a short drive away from a fairgrounds, and residents can check the schedule posted on a municipal website. Fairs also are commonly advertised in newspapers and on signage. Fairs have rides, carnival games, livestock shows and contests, food on a stick, and musical performances. They can be ideal ways for families to find something fun everyone can enjoy.
