Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes for our Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded

in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world and continues to do so today. Looking for a little kindness? Look no further than Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where youngsters have started out the year spreading positive vibes. Students in Anne Goode’s first grade class worked on “kind to the core” projects. Each child went apple picking by selecting a paper apple with a classmate’s name on it, then writing a short, kind message to that peer.

Her class also read “The Kindness Book” by author Todd Parr. In fifth grade, students in Olivia Anderson’s class were connected by kindness. They created a kindness chain out of paper links from each student. They wrote two messages based on prompts such as “I can show kindness by…” and “Kindness looks like…” The chain will hang in the classroom as a daily reminder to be kind to each other.

Kimberly Ordon’s third graders learned about Welles Crowther, the man in the red bandana, a 9/11 hero who helped save people from the Twin Towers. As a follow-up activity, they explored ways they can show kindness in school, at home and in their community. Their “I Can Make a Difference” worksheets hung outside the classroom, with each student listing three ways he or she could make a positive impact.

Eight Massapequa High School students have been recognized for their vocal and instrumental talents as All-State musicians. Chorus students Sofia Rose Alfieri, Nicholas Bernstein, Daniel Etter, Abigail Matheis, Rhyan O’Leary, James Ruiz and Isabella Traugott have been selected to participate in the New York State School Music Association’s 2026 All-State Winter Conference, which takes place from

Dec. 3-6 in Rochester. Livia Friedrich is an alternate in orchestra. “We are immensely proud that several of our talented music students have been selected for the NYSSMA All-State conference,” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Katie LoRusso. “Earning a spot in an All-State ensemble represents the highest honor a New York State high school musician can achieve.” Each student selected

for the All-State conference earned a perfect score of 100 on their NYSSMA Level VI solo evaluations. The 90th annual winter conference will include musical showcases and workshops for student musicians. They will also practice with their respective ensembles, comprised of students from across the state, before performing in a concert on one of the final two days.

2026 Tangerkids Grants Program For Local Schools And Educators Tanger Outlets Deer Park and Tanger Outlets Riverhead announced that its annual TangerKids Grants Program will return for the 2026/27 academic year, continuing its commitment to supporting local education and providing resources that help students thrive. school needs and request funding for programs that support student success. Town Seeks Volunteers To Assist In Shell Recycling At Oyster Festival

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Andrew Monteleone invite residents looking to help the environment and preserve our waterways to take part in the Town’s shell recycling initiative at the upcoming Oyster Festival, taking place Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th in Oyster Bay. “We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be a vital part of our environmental mission to help protect our harbor and improve our waterways,” explained Supervisor Saladino. “As a Shell Collection Station Attendant, volunteers will contribute their time to help divert oyster and clam shells from landfills, which will instead be recycled and used

for habitat restoration and growing new oysters.” Volunteers at this year’s festival will be asked to commit to working in three-hour shifts. Available time slots will be from 10 am through 7 pm on both Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th. Responsibilities will include identifying oyster and clam shells, overseeing a shell collection station with separate bins for general trash and for shells, guiding festivalgoers in correctly sorting their waste, and answering questions about the shell recycling program and educating attendees about its environmental benefits. Those interested in participating will receive giveaways, as well as community service hours for their participation.

“This is a great initiative that not only helps with recycling efforts but also restores shellfish populations in our harbor while improving water quality,” said Councilman Monteleone. “The program ensures shells don’t go to waste and once they are ready to go back into the harbor, they provide an excellent source of habitat for young shellfish to grow.” Anyone interested in volunteering for the shellfish recycling program can contact the Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943 or by emailing Environmental@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Massapequa Senior Named National Merit Semifinalist Massapequa High School senior David “DJ” Moravec was among more than 16,000 semifinalists announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. He achieved this prestigious distinction based on his 2025 PSAT score. DJ will now have an opportunity to continue

in the competition, which offers approximately 6,700 scholarships worth a combined $24 million. About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing. To become a finalist, a semifinalist and high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application that includes academic record, participation in school

and community activities, leadership abilities and honors and awards received. Scholarship winners, who earn the Merit Scholar title, are announced in the spring. In addition to his classes at Massapequa High School, DJ is enrolled in the video game design program at Long Island High School for Massapequa Superintendent Dr. William Brennan congratulates 2027 National Merit the Arts.
