Fall Lawn Care: Prepare Your Lawn for Winter

Fall is one of the best times of year to give your lawn some extra attention. Cooler temperatures, more moderate weather and adequate moisture provide favorable conditions for cool-season grasses to recover from summer stress, strengthen their roots and prepare for the winter months.

Keep mowing. Even as temperatures cool, grass may continue growing. Keep mowing as needed, but avoid cutting the lawn too short. A good rule is to remove no more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.

Fertilize wisely. Fall fertilization can help cool-season grasses recover from summer and build stronger root systems before winter. Homeowners should follow fertilizer directions carefully and consider having the soil tested to determine which nutrients are actually needed.

Stay on top of leaves. Fallen leaves can quickly cover a lawn in autumn. A thick layer can block sunlight and air, trap moisture and contribute to lawn problems. Rake or remove heavy accumulations regularly. Smaller amounts of leaves can often be mulched with a mower and returned to the lawn. Aerate compacted soil. Fall is a good time to aerate lawns that receive heavy foot trafﬁc or have compacted soil. Core aeration creates small openings that allow water, air and nutrients to reach

Peanut Butter Collection Drive

Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announce that the Town will once again partner with the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club to host a Peanut Butter Collection Drive to help replenish local food pantries. Beginning October 1st, residents are invited to donate new, unopened and sealed peanut butter to help support local families in need. Drop-off containers are located at Town Halls North and South, as well as at the Town Ice Skating Center. Alternative butters, including sun butters, almond butters and cookie butters, as well as jelly, are also accepted. “We are proud to once again partner with this great organization to help ‘spread the love’ and stock local food pantry shelves with this very popular product,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Peanut butter is among the most highly requested food items at local food banks as it has a long shelf life,

provides many nutrients and doesn’t require refrigeration. We thank the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club for again putting our local communities first with this wonderful initiative.” The Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club mission is to provide and encourage involvement in education, charitable and social programs for the men of local communities, and to support the local and wider community with activities and contributions. “The MassapequaFarmingdale Men’s Club has been assisting members of local communities and foodbanks for several years, and we’re thrilled to partner with them on such initiatives,” said Councilman Hand. The Peanut Butter Collection Drive will run from October 1st through November 15th. Drop off bins are located during regular business hours at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay), Town Hall

South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa) and the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage). “Our organization works tirelessly to help the local and greater community, and we wouldn’t have the success we have without great partners in government like the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Tom Sabellico, president and founder of the Men’s Club. “This very popular food drive is appreciated by many food banks, who have expressed they particularly like peanut butter thanks to it being easy to use, it keeps a long time, provides a variety of nutrients, is high in protection and is enjoyed by all age groups.” For information about the Massapequa Farmingdale Men’s Club and their mission, visit www.massapequa farmingdalemensclub.com. Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that Long Island’s largest and most premier car show experience returns to TOBAY Beach on Sunday, September 27th, from 11am to 4pm. “Car Show Long Island” features hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles. students included a helmet, a Pepsi can from the 1970s that was in one of the tower’s walls, the bandana he wore that day and a book his picture appears in. “It’s really important to humanize these stories as much as we can,” Ms. McMahon said. “It was the unthinkable.” Tara Camilleri continued a tradition of having her students take part in the Remember the Sky project, an homage to the clear blue sky on the morning on Sept. 1, 2001. Her students went outside with their Chromebooks, took various pictures of the sky, then returned to the classroom to create a mock social media post. Paul Corr’s ninth graders interviewed a family member about the events of 9/11 along with their own experiences and personal feelings. During class, they shared what they had learned. Kimberly SimpsonO’Brien spoke about the importance of passing history on down to the next generation. After showing a video of her 8-year-old son and his knowledge of 9/11, she then had her students create their own stories on how they would explain the tragedy to someone else. At the high school, seniors in Daniel Bachman’s Advanced

Placement Government class explored the debate on healthcare funding for 9/11 first responders. After watching three videos, students worked in pairs to create an argument in favor of the funding, using evidence. In Greg Kearney and Dr. Will Hahn’s 10th grade Global History class, students looked a map that showed the location of airplanes across the country hour by hour before and after the attacks. They then learned about Operation Yellow Ribbon in Gander, Newfoundland to support the passengers who were stranded there for several days after planes flying over the Atlantic Ocean were forced to land at the international airport there. Students explored 9/11 from the perspective of goodwill and humanity. United States History teacher Melissa Zuena showed her students a recent documentary, “9/11, United We Stand: 25 Years Later.” David Summers explored the causes of the terrorist attacks with his 11th graders, as they studied the period from the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 up to the 9/11 attacks. Jason Gelardi, curriculum associate for social studies, said he was incredibly proud of his teachers for the care

Students who were years away from even being born learned about the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 through personal stories, video, articles, projects and insightful conversation throughout the Massapequa School District on the 25th anniversary. At the elementary schools, the history of 9/11 was taught through the themes of resilience, teamwork and unity, with conversations about helping others and acts of heroism. Students at Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses explored the terrorist attacks on a more in-depth level, discussing the events of the day, its causes and the aftermath. Many teachers shared personal stories of where they were and what they were doing when they found out. Ninth grade social studies teacher Patti McMahon said it is important for students to learn from people with personal experiences. She welcomed school security guard Steve Miller to talk to her classes. The retired 23-year member of the New York City Police Department responded to the World Trade Center even though he was off from work that day, and worked at the pile for 44 days. The Foundation For Long Island State Parks, Inc. To Host Annual Golf Tournament At Bethpage Black Course The Foundation for Long Island State Parks, Inc. will host its Annual Golf Tournament on Thursday, October 8, at Bethpage State Park, bringing together supporters, partners, business leaders, and friends of New York State Parks for a premier day of golf at one of the nation’s most celebrated public golf destinations. The Black Course has hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009, The Barclays in 2012 and 2016, the PGA Championship in 2019, and the 2025 Ryder Cup, placing Bethpage among the most prestigious golf venues in the country. The Foundation’s Golf Tournament will offer guests an exclusive opportunity to experience the Bethpage Black Course while coming together in support of the Foundation for Long Island State Parks, Inc. and its efforts to strengthen and enhance Long Island’s state parks for generations to come. The day will commence with golfers being welcomed at 9:30AM with a breakfast buffet and access to the driving range and putting greens for warm-up. At 11:00AM, the Tournament will begin with a shotgun start. Throughout play, guests will enjoy lunch and beverage service on the course. Following the day’s play, guests will gather at 4:00PM on the Lennox Patio for a barbeque, awards presentations, and

prizes, providing a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary day at Bethpage State Park. The Foundation for Long Island State Parks is dedicated to supporting and advancing parks, programs and recreational opportunities that make Long Island’s State Parks treasured destinations for residents and visitors alike. The Golf Tournament represents an important opportunity to bring together individuals and organizations that share a commitment to the continued success and enhancement of these extraordinary public spaces.
