Spring is the season most often associated with lawn care, and for good reason. Grass starts growing in spring, making it a good time to fertilize many types of grass so lawns can look their best and withstand the hotter, drier weather of summer. While spring is when many homeowners begin tending to their lawns, it’s important to recognize the signiﬁcance of fall lawn care as well. Homeowners should identify their type of grass so they can provide the care it needs before winter’s ﬁrst frost. Coolseason grasses, such as perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass, are common in many regions, and the following strategies can help homeowners tend to their lawns this fall.

Stick to your recommended fertilization schedule: Homeowners who have been fertilizing since spring should continue doing so in fall at the recommended intervals. It’s easy to forget as temperatures cool and schedules become busier, but many fertilizer manufacturers recommend applying their products several times throughout the year, including in fall. Follow the intervals listed on the fertilizer packaging. Conduct a soil test: A soil test can determine if the soil is lacking nutrients needed for healthy grass growth. Amendments can help restore pH balance, if necessary, and promote stronger growth in spring.

Aerate, if necessary: Soil can become compacted over time, making it harder for water and fertilizer nutrients to reach grass roots. Compaction can weaken grass and make it more vulnerable to drought and other adverse weather. Aeration can promote stronger root development and may be best left to professionals, particularly for larger lawns. Remove excessive thatch: Thin layers of thatch can beneﬁt lawns by providing nutrients from grass clippings and leaves. However, excessive thatch can block air, water and fertilizer from reaching the soil. Thatch often can be removed with a rake, while especially thick layers may require scarifying or professional dethatching. Continue to water the lawn: Coolseason grasses still require water into the fall. Though lawns generally need less frequent watering than they do in summer, professionals note that coolseason grasses still need roughly an inch of water each week. Remove leaves as they fall: Fallen leaves can block water and nutrients from reaching the soil, much like excessive thatch. Remove leaves regularly, particularly when they begin accumulating in large quantities. Fall is an opportune time to tend to a lawn and increase the chances that grass will grow back strong and healthy in spring.

The Benefits Of A Fall Roof Replacement A roof is a vital component of a home, protecting the structure from the elements and ensuring that sun, rain, wind, and snow do not compromise the integrity of interior spaces. It can be extremely hot on a roof during summer, necessitating frequent breaks for workers. Winter weather conditions are not ideal for working on a roof, with snow and ice making surfaces slippery. ‘Oyster Bay: As It Was A Century Ago’ Brings History Alive In Oyster Bay Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board invite you to experience ‘Oyster Bay: As It Was A Century Ago,’ a historical presentation and visual tour of Historic Oyster Bay on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 1:00 p.m., at the Community Center located on Church Street in Oyster Bay. Hosted by Town Historian John Hammond, this slide show presentation will take viewers on a trip back in time through vintage photographs from his personal collection, many of which have never been viewed publicly, and include a discussion on the rich history of one of the oldest communities on Long Island. A Q&A is expected to follow the presentation.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Take a visual stroll through Historic Oyster Bay, as we revisit some notable Roosevelt homes, the house of the infamous Typhoid Mary, the old mill, the firehouses, and the renowned Vanderbilt Cup races. See the Oyster Bay School as it was and the Oyster Bay Free Library as it began, and some historic old businesses that used to thrive in town. This visual

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Town Animal Shelter is hosting ‘free adoption month’ where all general adoption fees will be waived throughout the month of September. “I invite and encourage residents looking for their new best friend to look no further than the Town Animal Shetler, where all adoptions are free all through September,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion.” During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, visit the Town’s Facebook page, or Town website at www.oysterbaytown.com. “Most shelter pets wind up there through no fault of their own, often for a

reason their owners are faced with, and are already housetrained and familiar living in family settings,” said Councilwoman Maier. “As someone who welcomed a shelter pet into my home several years ago, I can speak firsthand about how much they appreciate a second chance and the unconditional love they provide.” In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on Saturday, September 19th from 10 am

to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee. The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The shelter is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Residents interested in visiting the shelter can call to make an appointment. The doors to Massapequa’s nine schools opened up on Sept. 2, with nearly 6,000 students walking through. It was the first day of school for grades 1-12 following two months of summer vacation.

Just 24 hours later, the district’s youngest learners arrived, continuing a Massapequa School District tradition of having the first full day of kindergarten on the second day of school year. With 579 kindergartners

arriving at six elementary schools, it was all hands on deck. Administrators, teachers and support staff came together to make sure kindergartners found their way from the walker and busser entrances to their new classrooms.

Buildings were decorated with balloons, welcome back signs and fresh bulletin boards. The floors were shiny, desks were neatly arranged and bells toned right on time. Massapequa High School students got a glimpse of

the revamped gymnasium lobby that captures Chief pride through decaled walls, while a few dozen Birch Lane students settled into newly renovated classrooms. “A successful opening truly takes a team effort,

and Massapequa is the team of teams,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said. “As I visited our schools throughout the first two days, what stood out most were the smiles, positive energy and genuine passion throughout.”

Town Joins Vinny’s Army To Proclaim September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board joined with the Vinny’s Army organization to officially proclaim the month of September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the Town of Oyster Bay. Vinny’s Army is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children diagnosed with cancer, as well as their families. The creation of Vinny’s Army was inspired by the courageous battle faced by the Cusumano family of Massapequa, when their son Vinny was shockingly diagnosed with cancer in October of 2022. Just 10 years old at the time, Vinny was living the life of a regular kid finishing up elementary school, playing sports and spending time with his friends and family. That’s when Vinny’s Army was

Winterize Your Home Before Cold Weather Arrives It’s not uncommon to spend more time outside the house when the weather is warm. Outdoor living spaces make it easier to enjoy nature at home from late spring through midfall. But as fall gives way to winter and temperatures drop, it’s time to head back indoors. Before the cold weather arrives, homeowners can take several simple steps to winterize their homes. These preparations can make interior spaces more comfortable, improve energy efﬁciency, and help protect the home from the challenges of winter weather. Check your carbon monoxide detectors: Fall is a good time to check all carbon monoxide (CO) detectors throughout the home. The Minnesota Department of Health notes that CO is an odorless, colorless gas that cannot be detected by the senses. It can come from sources such as water heaters, gas stoves, ﬁreplaces and clothes dryers. When

windows remain closed for long periods during winter, CO can build up indoors and become dangerous. Make sure every detector is working properly and replace any that are not. Check for drafts: Inspect windows and doors throughout the home for gaps that may allow cold air to enter. Drafts can be easier to detect in the evening, when outdoor temperatures are cooler. Apply weatherstripping around doors and windows where needed. If aging windows or doors are allowing significant drafts, consider replacing them to improve comfort and energy efficiency. Call a chimney sweeping service: Before using a fireplace for the first time this season, have the chimney inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional. Animals may have built nests inside the chimney, while creosote, a highly flammable substance created when wood burns, can accumulate over time. Removing

Set fans to rotate clockwise so they push warm air that naturally rises toward the ceiling back down into the living space. Replace your HVAC air filter: Replace the air filter in your HVAC system before winter arrives. A clean filter can help the system operate more efficiently, potentially reducing energy use and heating costs. It can also improve indoor air quality during winter, when windows are generally closed for extended periods. Winterizing a home does not have to

be a major undertaking. Taking care of these simple maintenance and safety tasks before winter arrives can help homeowners stay comfortable, improve efﬁciency, and prepare their homes for the colder months ahead.
