Just 24 hours later, the district’s youngest learners arrived, continuing a Massapequa School District tradition of having the first full day of kindergarten on the second day of school year. With 579 kindergartners

arriving at six elementary schools, it was all hands on deck. Administrators, teachers and support staff came together to make sure kindergartners found their way from the walker and busser entrances to their new classrooms.

Buildings were decorated with balloons, welcome back signs and fresh bulletin boards. The floors were shiny, desks were neatly arranged and bells toned right on time. Massapequa High School students got a glimpse of

the revamped gymnasium lobby that captures Chief pride through decaled walls, while a few dozen Birch Lane students settled into newly renovated classrooms. “A successful opening truly takes a team effort,

and Massapequa is the team of teams,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said. “As I visited our schools throughout the first two days, what stood out most were the smiles, positive energy and genuine passion throughout.”

A Guide To Fall Lawn Care

Spring is the season most often associated with lawn care, and for good reason. Grass starts growing in spring, making it a good time to fertilize many types of grass so lawns can look their best and withstand the hotter, drier weather of summer. While spring is when many homeowners begin tending to their lawns, it’s important to recognize the signiﬁcance of fall lawn care as well. Homeowners should identify their type of grass so they can provide the care it needs before winter’s ﬁrst frost. Coolseason grasses, such as perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass, are common in many regions, and the following strategies can help homeowners tend to their lawns this fall. Stick to your recommended fertilization schedule: Homeowners who have been fertilizing since spring should continue doing so in fall at the recommended intervals. It’s easy to forget as temperatures cool and schedules become busier, but many fertilizer manufacturers recommend applying their products several times throughout the year, including in fall. Follow the intervals listed on the fertilizer packaging. Conduct a soil test: A soil test can determine if the soil is lacking nutrients needed for healthy grass growth. Amendments can help restore pH balance, if necessary, and promote stronger growth in spring.

Aerate, if necessary: Soil can become compacted over time, making it harder for water and fertilizer nutrients to reach grass roots. Compaction can weaken grass and make it more vulnerable to drought and other adverse weather. Aeration can promote stronger root development and may be best left to professionals, particularly for larger lawns. Remove excessive thatch: Thin layers of thatch can beneﬁt lawns by providing nutrients from grass clippings and leaves. However, excessive thatch can block air, water and fertilizer from reaching the soil. Thatch often can be removed with a rake, while especially thick layers may require scarifying or professional dethatching. Continue to water the lawn: Coolseason grasses still require water into the fall. Though lawns generally need less frequent watering than they do in summer, professionals note that coolseason grasses still need roughly an inch of water each week. Remove leaves as they fall: Fallen leaves can block water and nutrients from reaching the soil, much like excessive thatch. Remove leaves regularly, particularly when they begin accumulating in large quantities. Fall is an opportune time to tend to a lawn and increase the chances that grass will grow back strong and healthy in spring.

The posttournament tailgate party will take place on the beach at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay. “The Bluefish Tournament is a great all-day sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Join us for this fun day of tranquility on the water, the adrenaline rush of feeling that first big tug on your fishing line and the spirit of competition as you try to beat the tournament record and compete for prizes.” The tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is open to anglers of all ages. All contestants must be pre-registered. The entrance fee for the tournament is $40 per fisherman. All participants will be automatically entered into the door prize raffle. There will be a grand door prize raffle of an inflatable boat and motor courtesy of Property Tax Reduction Consultants. Registration can be found online at www. oysterbaytown.com/ sports. Residents can drop off materials at the Old Bethpage Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 BethpageSweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage. Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic September 19th

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Town Animal Shelter is hosting ‘free adoption month’ where all general adoption fees will be waived throughout the month of September. “I invite and encourage residents looking for their new best friend to look no further than the Town Animal Shetler, where all adoptions are free all through September,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion.” During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per

dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, visit the Town’s Facebook page, or Town website at www. oysterbaytown.com. “Most shelter pets wind up there through no fault of their own, often for a reason their owners are faced with, and are already housetrained and familiar living in family settings,” said Councilwoman Maier. “As someone who welcomed a shelter pet into my home several years ago, I can speak firsthand about how much they appreciate a second chance and the unconditional love

they provide.” In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on Saturday, September 19th from 10 am to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee. The Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter is located at 150 Miller Place in Syosset. The shelter is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Residents interested in visiting the shelter can call to make an appointment. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh recently honored the participants of ‘We Care Blankets,’ a Massapequa based nonprofit organization, for their incredible dedication in knitting and crocheting over 100 blanks to be donated to children’s hospitals across the country.

“These soft and beautiful blankets were clearly made with love, and will help soothe and protect children with cancer and other pediatric ailments,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “These blankets will make a comforting gift for children who need it the most.” ‘We Care Blankets’ is a group of civic-minded and

Free ‘Last Summer Blast’ Concert With The Lords Of 52nd Street Town of Oyster Bay residents will be treated to ‘One Last Summer Blast’ following a successful summer concert series when the Lords of 52nd Street will perform at Ellsworth W. Children’s Snapper Derby Returning To Oyster Bay September 20th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca invite residents to attend the Town’s 4th Annual Children’s Snapper Derby to be featured at the famed Bluefish Tournament on Sunday, September 20th, at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay. “This fun family event is open to youngsters ages 14 and under with fun prizes and awards for winners, as well as giveaways for all participants,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This fun event provides a great opportunity to introduce children to the wonderful recreational sport of

fishing.” The Snapper Derby will take place between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., during the Town’s Bluefish Tournament, at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park by the fishing pier. There is a $15 registration entry fee. Participants are invited to bring their own equipment, including poles and bait, as supplies are limited. Children will be placed into two age groups, ages 7 and under, and 8-14. Winners will be based on number of snappers caught - catch and release only - with awards and prizes being given out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd

place for each age group. Family fun activities will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. “We are thrilled to bring this fun event to Theodore Roosevelt Park and invite all children who enjoy fishing to sign up and participate,” said Clerk LaMarca. “There will be free refreshments, shirts and raffles for all participants, as well as awards and prizes for top winners.” Registrater now online at www.oysterbaytown.com/sports. Town To Collect DVDs For Troops & Children’s Hospitals Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board have announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted during the month of September and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner

with Big Hy for Heroes for our Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world and continues to do so today.

Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals.
