Conduct a soil test: A soil test can determine if the soil is lacking nutrients needed for healthy grass growth. Amendments can help restore pH balance, if necessary, and promote stronger growth in spring.
Aerate, if necessary: Soil can become compacted over time, making it harder for water and fertilizer nutrients to reach grass roots. Compaction can weaken grass and make it more vulnerable to drought and other adverse weather. Aeration can promote stronger root development and may be best left to professionals, particularly for larger lawns. Remove excessive thatch: Thin layers of thatch can benefit lawns by providing nutrients from grass clippings and leaves. However, excessive thatch can block air, water and fertilizer from reaching the soil. Thatch often can be removed with a rake, while especially thick layers may require scarifying or professional dethatching. Continue to water the lawn: Coolseason grasses still require water into the fall. Though lawns generally need less frequent watering than they do in summer, professionals note that coolseason grasses still need roughly an inch of water each week. Remove leaves as they fall: Fallen leaves can block water and nutrients from reaching the soil, much like excessive thatch. Remove leaves regularly, particularly when they begin accumulating in large quantities. Fall is an opportune time to tend to a lawn and increase the chances that grass will grow back strong and healthy in spring.

Babylon Welcomes Staff Back for Superintendent’s Conference Day The Babylon Union Free School District officially opened the 20262027 school year with its annual Superintendent’s Conference Days on
August 31 and September 1, welcoming faculty and staff back for two days of professional learning, collaboration, and preparation.
Superintendent of Schools Carisa A. Manza welcomed staff with the district’s guiding theme for the year: “Rise, Lead, Inspire,” encouraging the
entire school community to strive for excellence, serve with purpose, and inspire through action and relationships. The conference featured

a keynote address from nationally recognized educator and speaker Gerry Brooks, who shared insights on school culture, leadership, and the power of connection in education. Babylon School District. The two-day schedule included building-based breakfast gatherings, grade-level and department meetings, special education planning sessions, and classroom preparation time. Training sessions were also held for aides, monitors, and food service staff. The first day concluded with a luncheon provided by the Babylon Teachers Association.

However, rotten framing, moisture problems, and significant drafts often indicate replacement is the better option. • Understand replacement and construction windows. Replacement, or pocket, windows are installed within an existing frame. Construction windows require removal of the entire old window, including the frame, sill, and trim, making them more expensive to install. • Consider frame materials. Vinyl windows are affordable and low-maintenance. Aluminum and aluminum-clad windows are economical, corrosion-resistant, and require little upkeep. Wood provides a traditional appearance, while fiberglass is durable and

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will be participating in the 37th Annual International Coastal Cleanup at several park locations. The International Coastal Cleanup is a global effort, under the international umbrella of Ocean Conservancy, in which over 100 countries participate. Every year, under the Littoral Society’s leadership, Total Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and Total Physical Therapy recently celebrated the opening of their new Babylon location with an official ribboncutting ceremony hosted by the Babylon Chamber of Commerce. The event, held Thursday, September 10, brought together physicians, physical therapists, staff, community partners and members of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce to mark the practice’s newest location at 380 West Main Street in Babylon. The new facility brings comprehensive orthopedic care and physical therapy together in the Babylon community, providing patients with convenient access to orthopedic specialists, sports medicine, pain management and physical therapy. For 20 years, Total Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has focused on providing exceptional, compassionate orthopedic care and helping patients return to the people, activities and moments that matter most. The practice’s philosophy is reflected in its message, “Getting You Back to You.” “We’ve always believed that exceptional orthopedic care is about more than treating an injury. It’s about helping people return to their families, their work, their sports, and the
things that are important to them,” said Charles Ruotolo, M.D., President of Total Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. “We’re excited to become part of the Babylon community and continue expanding the care we provide across Long Island.” Raymond N. Educators on Long Island are encouraged to apply for funding at grants.tanger. com through Oct. 18. The TangerKids Grants Program gives teachers and education leaders across the country the opportunity to identify classroom and
school needs and request funding for programs that support student success. Grants may be used for initiatives that enhance learning environments, improve accessibility, address student needs and provide additional resources for schools and classrooms. Faculty members at public and private schools serving pre-K through grade 12 students are eligible to apply. For 30 years, Tanger has invested in education by providing more than $3.9 million in grants to schools and educational programs
across the communities it serves through 38 outlet centers and four open-air lifestyle centers. In 2025, TangerKids Grants awarded an estimated $200,000 to initiatives throughout the U.S. and Canada, with a focus on supporting inclusive classroom environments, underserved schools and programs that address evolving student needs. Grant winners for 2026 in each community will be announced and celebrated during the center’s annual TangerKids Day in January 2027.

Winterize Your Home Before Cold Weather Arrives It’s not uncommon to spend more time outside the house when the weather is warm. Outdoor living spaces make it easier to enjoy nature at home from late spring through midfall. But as fall gives way to winter and temperatures drop, it’s time to head back indoors. Before the cold weather arrives, homeowners can take several simple steps to winterize their homes. These preparations can make interior spaces more comfortable, improve energy efficiency, and help protect the home from the challenges of winter weather. Check your carbon monoxide detectors: Fall is a good time to check all carbon monoxide (CO) detectors throughout the home. The Minnesota Department of Health notes that CO is an odorless, colorless gas that cannot be detected by the senses. It can come from sources such as water heaters, gas stoves, fireplaces and clothes dryers. When
windows remain closed for long periods during winter, CO can build up indoors and become dangerous. Make sure every detector is working properly and replace any that are not. Check for drafts: Inspect windows and doors throughout the home for gaps that may allow cold air to enter. Drafts can be easier to detect in the evening, when outdoor temperatures are cooler. Apply weatherstripping around doors and windows where needed. If aging windows or doors are allowing significant drafts, consider replacing them to improve comfort and energy efficiency. Call a chimney sweeping service: Before using a fireplace for the first time this season, have the chimney inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional. Animals may have built nests inside the chimney, while creosote, a highly flammable substance created when wood burns, can accumulate over time. Removing
these hazards can reduce the risk of chimney fires and help ensure dangerous gases, including CO, can safely exit the home. Reverse your ceiling fans: Ceiling fans can be useful during the colder months as well. Set fans to rotate clockwise so they push warm air that naturally rises toward the ceiling back down into the living space. This simple adjustment can help rooms feel warmer without requiring homeowners to turn up the thermostat and increase energy costs. Replace your HVAC air filter: Replace the air filter in your HVAC system before winter arrives. A clean filter can help the system operate more efficiently, potentially reducing energy use and heating costs. It can also improve indoor air quality during winter, when windows are generally closed for extended periods. Winterizing a home does not have to
be a major undertaking. Taking care of these simple maintenance and safety tasks before winter arrives can help homeowners stay comfortable, improve efficiency, and prepare their homes for the colder months ahead.

The Babylon Union Free School District has appointed Steve Benner as the new principal of Babylon Memorial Grade School, effective this school year. He replaces Lauren Fretto, who has been appointed assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the Floral Park-Bellerose Union Free School District. Mr. Benner most recently served as Assistant Principal and Dean of Students at Mineola Middle School, a role he held since 2018. In that capacity, he led the creation of an integrated curriculum aligned with Next Generation Standards, facilitated professional learning communities, and developed personalized learning pathways for students. He also managed building-level operations,
including technology deployment, testing coordination, and student support services. Prior to his tenure in Mineola, Benner taught social studies at Wantagh Middle and High School for six years and served as an associate dean, handling disciplinary matters, safety initiatives, and student support. He also held an administrative internship at Wantagh High School, where he contributed to district visioning and
committee work on safety, attendance, and discipline. Benner holds advanced certificates in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership from the College of St. Rose, a Master of Arts in Social Studies Education from Adelphi University (summa cum laude), and additional certifications from Hofstra University and Nassau Community College. He was also a recipient of the 2025 BOCES NASTAR Award for Technological Educational Leadership. “It has been the greatest honor of my career to be appointed as the principal of Babylon Memorial Grade School and look forward to upholding the values of our great community,” he said. “The Grade School will continue to be a place where all students feel welcomed, learn, grow and have fun at school.”
