Planning Unique Family Staycations As a result of the economic downturn that began in 2008, many families found themselves forgoing traditional vacations in favor of “staycations.” In such instances, families spent time away from work and school together but did not travel far, if at all.
While the economy has bounced back since the dawn of the staycation, many families are still choosing to stay at home in an effort to save money. Staycations might not seem as glamorous as traveling abroad or as relaxing as spending a week in an oceanfront resort or condominium, but there are ways for families to make staycations more fun and seem like a true departure from everyday life: Experiment with new cuisine. One of the joys of travel is the opportunity to dine out and experience cuisine native to particular locales. But families don’t need to travel abroad to enjoy this particular benefit of traveling. The internet is home
to a wealth of recipes from countries far and wide. Parents and their kids can choose recipes online and prepare meals from a different country each night, or pick a “country or region of the week” and prepare a different dish native to that area each night. This provides a great departure from ordinary family dinners and can make for a fun activity for the whole family. Camp out. Straying from the norm, even when staying at home, can make staycations seem more like a vacation than merely a week away from school or the office. Parents who want to add a dash of adventure to their families’ staycations can set up tents in the backyard and sleep under the stars or seek out local campsites that are free or relatively inexpensive. Tell stories around a backyard firepit when staying at home to provide a more authentic camping experience for everyone. Take in local culture. Rather than spending the week lounging around the house or
the backyard pool, families can explore the cultural opportunities in their towns or cities. Busy families tend to take such opportunities for granted when they get caught up in the daily grind, and exploring local history and artistic opportunities in the same way you would when traveling can provide a sense of excitement similar to that experienced during more traditional vacations. Visit a local zoo, take in a performance at a local theater company or take a guided historical tour of an area of your hometown or a nearby city.

Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century. Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air. Bumper cars, also called dogems in other English-speaking countries, were the brainchild of inventor Victor Levand, who worked for General Electric. Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. Carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride. One attraction that is synonymous with fairs and amusement parks is the Ferris wheel. The original Ferris wheel was designed and constructed for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Since then, Ferris wheels have become the most common type of amusement rides at state fairs and other attractions. However, “pleasure wheels” and “great wheels” have appeared throughout history in areas of Persia, India and Bulgaria. Log flume rides allow thrillseekers to extend their fun into the water. Top Tips for Fun Days at the Beach Millions of people visit the beach each summer. For some people, there is no better place than the beach, where they can listen to the waves crash on the shore and smell the briny air. The United States Lifesaving Association routinely compiles statistics on beach attendance, watercraft use and other recreational information, estimating that 367,231,142 people took to beaches across the country in 2015, the most recent reporting year. Cool coastal temps and refreshing oceans and lakes make the beach an ideal place to survive the heat. While a trip to the beach has the makings of a great day, a few tips can help make these sun- and sand-filled days even better: Protect Electronics Sand and surf can be calming, but not if your newest mobile phone gets doused with the incoming tide. For those bringing their phones or tablets along, steps to protect the gadgets
can make the day even more calming. A zip-seal plastic bag can do the trick, and you can still access the screen through the plastic. If you plan to spend time on a boat, you may want to invest in waterproof, floating pouches.

Hide Your Money Leaving your money or belongings out in the open may entice thieves. Camouflage items of value by storing them in an empty sunscreen bottle nestled in a beach bag. Stay Cool Purchase or make a vividly patterned tarp/tent to offer a shady respite. This will also help the family find their way back to your beach spot. Place sandals or flip-flops face-down in the sand or on a blanket to ensure they won’t be scalding after a day at the beach. Trips to the beach are a summertime tradition. With a few tips and tricks, the memories can be even better.

Know Before You Go: Camping Camping is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in North America. The statistics resource Statistica says the revenue of campgrounds and RV parks was estimated at $5.8 billion in 2015. More than $2.5 billion was relegated to camping equipment spending.

Children in North America will spend, on average, more than 900 hours attending school in a given year. The average school year in the United States lasts 1,016 hours, the equivalent of 42 continuous days. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, many developed countries begin their academic years in September and end them in June. Stick to a schedule. Try to maintain a schedule similar to school, with children waking at the same time each day and going to bed at similar hours. This will make it much easier to get back into a routine when a new school year begins. Encourage reading. Set aside time for reading each day. All it generally takes is 15 to 30 minutes of reading per day for kids to remember their vocabulary lessons and maintain their fluency and comprehension skills. Children may enjoy picking their own books rather than having a required reading list. Keep a math book handy. On long car trips or rainy days, children can do a few math problems to keep their skills sharp. This will help keep learning loss to a minimum. Many children attend camp for a portion of their school breaks. Look for camps that do not simply babysit children, but engage them through enrichment activities. Take a class. Children and families can learn together by exploring new skills. Enroll in something educational and enjoyable, such as a music or dance class, a STEM seminar or something else that engages the mind and body. This gives everyone a chance to learn something new and have a great time together as a family. Dessert and summer are a match made in heaven. Sweltering summer afternoons might not be comfortable, but any discomfort can be quickly washed away with a refreshing dessert, such as the following recipe for Kiwi Fruit Sorbet...
Kiwi Fruit Sorbet Directions Ingredients 2 teaspoons grated lime or lemon zest 3⁄4 cup sugar, divided 3⁄4 cup water 2 pounds kiwi fruit (about 8 kiwi fruit), peeled and quartered 6 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice 2 limes, quartered
In a small bowl, mash the zest with 1 teaspoon of the sugar to release the oils. Combine the remaining sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Cook until the syrup is clear. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. In a food processor or blender, purée the kiwi fruit with the juice, syrup and sugared zest. Transfer to a container, cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 3 hours.
Makes About 1 quart
Freeze in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Or, to freeze without an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a 9-inch nonreactive square pan. Cover with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and freeze just until solid, 2 to 3 hours. Scrape out into an electric mixer or food processor and process briefly until light and fluffy. Serve at once or transfer to a container, cover and freeze until firm, about 2 hours. At serving time, garnish with a lime wedge to squeeze over each serving.

In a small pot over medium-high heat, combine 1 tablespoon of butter and the garlic for the garlic sauce. Sauté the garlic for 1 minute, add the mild barbecue sauce and dry rub, and heat to a boil. Remove from the heat, whisk in the remaining butter, and set aside to use as needed.
