‘Tis the season of growth and renewal, of blossoms, birds and bees, the beginning of warmer weather and all things green and lush. And with that, our Spring issue of Seasons® Magazine has arrived to take you through the next few months of life on Long Island. Our Spring Scene is packed with fun activities for you and your family, from outdoor craft fairs and flower festivals to nature walks and Easterthemed events for the kiddies. Long Island Restaurant Week closes out the month of April, and don’t forget everyone’s favorite summer kickoff event, the annual Jones Beach Air Show, held over Memorial Day weekend. Speaking of holidays, Spring certainly has no shortage of special days to commemorate, from Easter and Passover to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and let’s not forget prom and graduation season just over the horizon. We have plenty of helpful hints to make these occasions memorable, including gift ideas, cost saving tips and unique variations on some old favorites. Looking for a few new recipes to try out this season? Our Savory Selections feature has returned, highlighting “Maple Pecan Scones” and “Asparagus & Ham Crépes,” two delectable selections sure to make your taste buds water. Have you tried any of our featured recipes? We’d love to hear from you if you have! For our Summer issue, we are asking readers to send in their scenic snapshots of life on Long Island for consideration in our Summer on Long Island feature. Submit your photographs, along with your name and hometown, to: Editorial@SeasonsMagazineOnline.com - then keep an eye out on June 21st to see if your pictures were selected! Cutting Prom Costs without Cutting Into Fun Many people fondly remember their high school proms. But while proms make great memories, they also can break the bank Prom can be an expensive rite of passage. A 2015 survey from Visa indicated the average American family planned to spend about $900 on the prom, with parents contributing as much as 75 percent of those costs. Similarly, Visa Canada’s survey showed households with teens were prepared to spend an average of $500 on prom in 2015. And spending on the prom isn’t all that’s contributing to the event’s final price tag. There’s the “promposal” to factor in as well. In Canada, many teens spend about $150 just to ask out a potential prom date, and Americans can spend more than double that amount on their promposals. Tickets, transportation, attire, grooming treatments, meals and several other factors can add up to make prom very costly. However, those feeling the potential stress of the prom bill can explore
various ways to cut those costs. Search for deals. Subscribe to mailing lists and download dealfinder apps like LivingSocial or Groupon to find the best deals. If there’s a particular manufacturer or store that you prefer, subscribe to their mailing list, which might make you eligible for “insider” deals.
memory book or wall portrait.
fashion into boutonnieres and corsages. Also, nothing says you cannot pull a beautiful bloom out of your home garden as well.
Savings in numbers. See if a particular vendor will cut costs if you book services with a group of friends. Retailers will be guaranteed the sales, and promgoers can save some money.
Be your own paparazzi. Smartphone cameras now have excellent capabilities, and certain apps can apply filters and fix minor flaws easily. Pair with a coupon for discount photo prints, and soon you’ll have a frugal photo
Prom is meant for making memories, not getting into debt. Save money with smart shopping.
Shop early. Get a jump on prom shopping and possibly save some money by shopping early for prom wardrobes. Girls can shop when party dresses are on discount after New Year’s Eve galas. Waiting until prom season to shop for prom night attire can be a costly mistake, as dresses and formwalwear tends to be expensive come prom season. Guys can shop sales as well if they want to make a splash in a custom suit. Otherwise, guys can rent tuxedos to save money. Go supermarket floral. Supermarkets and warehouse clubs may offer discounted prices on flowers, which promgoers can

Choose a Clever Graduation Gift Graduation celebrations typically involve commencement ceremonies, family dinners and/or parties and plenty of gifts for newly minted grads.
the dorm, a single-serve coffee machine can help students make it through finals week. A coffee machine also will help students save money on takeout coffee.
According to the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics, roughly 3.5 million students are expected to be awarded high school diplomas at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. That makes graduation season a season for shopping as well.
Macro Phone Camera Lens: Graduates can capture all of their memories from parties, vacations and more with a macro lens to fit their phones.
Graduation gifts can be as varied as the personalities of the graduates themselves. Here are some less typical gift ideas for shoppers who want to give the new grads in their lives something unique: Time Capsule: Let the graduate pull together a series of items that exemplify some of the best days of their lives. These items can then be tucked away in the capsule and opened years from now. Monogrammed Items: College students may arrive on campus with items that look very similar to their new classmates’ belongings. Set your favorite grad’s items apart with monogrammed pieces that are unique and easy to recognize. Individual Coffee Machine: If it’s allowed in
Survival Kit: If the graduate is going to college or leaving college, customize a basket full of items he or she may need to make their transitions that much easier. Food can always serve as the centerpiece of such baskets, but don’t hesitate to include decorative items to outfit that first apartment or dorm room. Commemorative Coins: Purchase coins for the year the graduate was born or the year he or she is graduating. These coins can be saved or later turned into useable currency. Tailgating Kit: Set up your graduate with a portable grill and the grilling accoutrements needed to throw a great tailgating party with friends.
Family Vacation: For college graduates, a voucher for a fun, old-fashioned vacation can bring the family together one last time before jobs and mismatched schedules get in the way.
Restaurant Gift Cards: Grads need to eat but are often short on money. Research local eateries around the college campus and stock up on gift cards.
Graduations offer a chance to celebrate students who are moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Fun and thoughtful gifts can make the transition that much easier.

Avoid Aches & Pains While Gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent greenthumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden.

Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions,
gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

Easter calls to mind colored eggs and baskets full of candy and toys. Many of the things used for Easter celebrations are not necessarily eco-friendly. But there are ways to embrace greener options to ensure Easter is a happy time for celebrants and the environment. Here’s how to get started: Easter Baskets Easter baskets overflowing with fake grass and plenty of treats are an eagerly anticipated component of Easter celebrations. However, many of the items found in a typical Easter basket - or even the basket itself - may be made of items that are damaging to the environment. Plastic easter eggs are made from plastics that may not be biodegradable. Furthermore, they may be made using chemicals that are damaging to the environment. Plastic grass carries the same dangers. Once discarded, plastic grass also may pose risks to wildlife that can become tangled in the substance or inadvertently eat it and choke or experience intestinal blockage. Instead of pre-packaged Easter baskets, individuals can construct their own. Look for baskets made from reusable materials, such as wicker or other wood-based materials, steering away from plastic. Instead of plastic grass, shred paper that is headed for the recycling bin. Look for treats without excessive packaging. You can gather healthy treats and toys individually and put together in the basket. This way, you can cater more to what your child enjoys and rely less on the cheap stuff that will end up in the garbage. Easter Eggs Coloring Easter eggs is a tradition. So are the coloring kits that may
be made from chemical food dyes. Instead, look to natural foods to add a festive hue to the eggs. Cranberry juice or beet juice can turn eggs pink. Red cabbage leaves or mashed blueberries can dye eggs blue. And turmeric can give eggs a yellow tint. These all-natural dyes are safe for little fingers. All-Natural Decorations Rather than silk flowers and plastic eggs, use the real thing in your decorating. Bring a little of the outside indoors with fresh flowers in a vase. Use twigs and ribbon to create inexpensive and green centerpieces for the holiday table. Wrap cloth napkins in a thick blade of grass for a little festivity. Construct wreaths from pruned garden clippings and florist wire to dress up doorways. Table Settings Avoid disposable products whenever possible to prevent extra items from ending up in the trash. It is easy to wash ceramic or even fine china with ease in a dishwasher. Think about purchasing decorative springthemed glasses that can be reused year after year. Resist the urge to use disposable bakeware and serving platters as well. While they may take a little longer to wash, you’ll be doing your part to help the planet. Easter Dinner Many families dine on ham and potatoes or a roast for Easter dinner. Shop locally at your nearest butcher for the meat instead of purchasing something mass-produced in a can. A local farm stand may yield plenty of fresh vegetables to accompany the main course. Instead of storebought desserts, think about fresh berries in a homemade pie for the perfect ending to this festive day.

For the borscht 1 bunch (1 pound) baby beets, with tops 1 pound new potatoes 1⁄2 cup honey, preferably avocado honey Sea salt Fresh dill for garnish (optional)
Reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots Treat acne scars, reduce bacteria, redness and inflammation
DIRECTIONS
To make the crème fraîche, combine the heavy cream and sour cream in a jar. Shake thoroughly to mix and place in a warm pot overnight. Once the cream has thickened, refrigerate until ready to use. Crème fraîche will keep in the refrigerator for 1 week. Cut off the beet tops and chop them. Combine the beets, the chopped tops and the potatoes in a 6-quart soup pot and cover with about 2 quarts of cold water. (Don’t completely fill the pot; put in just enough water to cover the vegetables.) Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until the beets can be pierced with a fork, about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the vegetables. Prepare an ice-water bath by filling a large bowl with ice water. Remove the beets and the potatoes from the cooking liquid using a slotted spoon. Plunge the cooked beets into the ice-water bath and slip the skins off. Strain the cooking liquid through a sieve or colander and into a bowl. Compost the beet skins and the cooked beet greens. Grate or chop the beets and potatoes and return to the broth. Add the honey and season with salt to taste.

Homeowners often aspire to have attractive backyards that look like they belong in a magazine. While these can be picturesque and functional for adults, they may not be entirely practical for homeowners who have young children, especially when the majority of the yard is covered with paving stones or concrete. When young children are part of a household, homeowners may benefit by designing yards that are both functional and fun. Incorporating safe play areas for kids is one way to unlock the potential of both big and small backyards. As children run off to enjoy a playground, safety is the last thing on their minds. Kids are most interested in scaling ladders to treehouses or coasting down slides. That’s why adults must take it upon themselves to keep injury prevention in mind. SafestPlayground.com indicates that playground-related injuries routinely result in severe fractures, internal injuries, concussions and dislocations. In the majority of playground injuries to children younger than age 5, the head and face are affected. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 experience more leg and arm injuries than younger kids. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states 70 percent of children’s injuries occur on home playgrounds. More than 28,000 children are injured each year on playgrounds across Canada, according to Parachute, a national injury prevention organization. When considering playground equipment for the yard, parents need to make safety a priority. The Canada Safety Society advises parents to follow the “5 S’s of Playground Safety” - Surface, structures, site, supervision and safety:
Surface: Parents should assume that children will fall. To lessen the blow of falls, choose playground equipment with a perimeter of six feet of a softer surface, such as sand, pea gravel, rubber pieces or wood chips. This material should be between six and 12 inches deep. Structure: The structure of the play equipment should be built from sturdy materials. Pressuretreated lumber was once the standard, but it’s not adviseable for kids’ playgrounds, as the chemicals used in the lumber can leach, and young children may actually bite or pick at the wood. Use cedar or another wood that resists decay. Once the structure is built, inspect it frequently for damage. Site: Look around the landscape for an ideal place to locate the playset. There should be no obstacles that children can hit while sliding or swinging. Avoid overhanging branches and do not place equipment too close to trees or fencing. Try to keep the set out of direct sunlight, which can make components heat up and scald young bodies. Supervision: Do not leave children alone while they are playing. Prevent children from using the playset in an incorrect manner. Safety: Follow the directions for installation. Make sure all posts are anchored into the ground securely. Railings should be spaced so that children cannot get stuck between them. Check that metal components have not rusted and that there is no additional excessive wear. Be sure that no tools or other dangerous items are left around the yard. Backyard playgrounds should be built with safety in mind. Learn the rules of play equipment and yard safety.

Tire Care Key for Spring
MEDICAL SUPPLIES, INC.
When warm weather arrives, many people enjoy a collective sigh of relief. Just as people welcome the end of the cold, snow and ice, cars and trucks also can benefit from more moderate temperatures. Salt, grime and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical winter. Drivers will not get far this spring and summer without tires in good repair, which is why tire maintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. Inflation Levels Now is the time to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. Many tires indicate the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidewalls. Cold temperatures may cause tires to deflate a little. Esurance states that winter weather can cause tire pressure reduction at about one PSI for every 10 degrees the temperature drops. Driving on improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also will improve fuel economy, so drivers may even save a little money by inflating their tires. Tire Rotation/Realignment
Examine the tires for tread wear. Any uneven or abnormal tread wear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the wheels realigned at the very least. Take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic to get their opinion on how to remedy the situation. Mechanics may recommend rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every six months for the average driver. Wheel realignment may be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Misaligned wheels can cause handling problems, like the car “pulling” to one side.

Tire Replacement Drivers may discover extreme tread wear, bulges or even cracks in the sidewall during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s time to replace the tires. Failing to replace old, worn down tires can increase the risk of automobile accidents. Thorough Cleaning Once tires are inspected and possibly serviced or replaced, treat the car or truck to a washing and thorough detailing. This will help tires shine and get the vehicle road-ready for spring trips.

THE WARMTH OF HOME... Offering the Finest Rehabilitation and Health Care Services
The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. While Mother’s Day traditions have changed since Jarvis first proposed the holiday, many people feel it’s customary to give mothers gifts on Mother’s Day, when moms take the day off from chores and relax with their families. Flowers make for popular Mother’s Day gifts, and well-wishers who want to give the special women in their lives flowers this year can consider a host of varieties. Carnations Carnations are popular Mother’s Day flowers, perhaps because they are available in a number of colors. That means it’s highly

likely sons, daughters, husbands and others gifting moms this Mother’s Day can find some carnations in Mom’s favorite color. Ask your florist about what each carnation color symbolizes, as each has its own unique meaning. Pink carnations, for example, are believed to symbolize a mother’s love. Roses Few mothers can resist roses, making them one of the more popular flowers come Mother’s Day. Roses are symbolic of love and make the perfect floral gift for mothers who like traditional flowers. If you want to spice things up, order a bouquet made up of roses of various colors. Daffodils Yellow is synonymous with spring, and daffodils can highlight the season in which Mother’s Day takes place while also providing a cheerful look that’s perfect for Mother’s Day floral bouquets. Daffodils can be given on their own or added to mixed bouquets. Daffodils also last quite a while when cared for correctly, giving moms more than just a few days to enjoy their bouquets. Freesia Like daffodils, freesia are longlasting, meaning mothers will still be enjoying them long after Mother’s Day has come and gone. The inviting fragrance of freesia makes bouquets of these flowers popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts. Freesia also come in many colors, proving Mother’s Day gift givers a greater chance of finding flowers their mothers will love.

Fresh herbs and recently picked ingredients can add flavor to any meal. A home chef can even improve the flavor of storebought or prepared foods with an herb garnish that can transform otherwise bland dishes into something you’ll want to eat again and again.

Affordable, quality Professional Behavior Training Program offers assistance for new pet parents with guidance in raising their new canine family member, as well as families struggling with behavioral and training issues.
Harvesting fresh herbs is easy for homeowners who have gardens right in their backyards. However, everyone does not have a backyard, and even those who do might find their gardens threatened by changing seasons or unwanted critters. When gardens are moved indoors, the bounty of fresh ingredients continues no matter the date on the calendar.

Herb gardens are perhaps some of the easiest gardens to cultivate indoors because they don’t require large pots or much space. The plants themselves are relatively compact, and it only takes a pinch of herbs to give a meal some extra flavor. When growing herbs indoors, your indoor growing area must have adequate light to simulate the longer days of summer; otherwise, the plants may go dormant. It’s ideal to have a southern exposure on the herbs, with at least eight hours of sunlight per day. If you do not live in a particularly sunny locale, consider supplementing the plants with grow lights, which will provide the full spectrum of light the plants need to thrive.

BAYBRENT TILE CORP. CERAMIC TILE SPECIALISTS
Indoor air can become too dry for herbs, so you will need to compensate by providing humidity. While there may be added humidity in a kitchen greenhouse window, it still may not be enough to keep the plants healthy. Think about misting the plants daily to create some extra humidity, or place herb pots on top of a water-filled tray with pebbles so the evaporating water will add moisture without making the roots soggy. Insects are another threat to indoor gardens because there is no cold weather to inhibit the hatching of insect eggs. Soil from outdoors may be more susceptible to insects that are already living in the dirt. Instead of soil from outside, use packaged soil or a nonsoil alternative that will hold moisture without the added risk of bugs. If small insects appear, use a mist of soapy water to kill the bugs without harming the plants or making the herbs unfit for eating. Group herbs together according to their watering needs to make maintenance that much easier. New sprouts generally need more water than established plants. Prune the herbs as needed for recipes. If the herbs experience a growth spurt, trim some of the plants and freeze the herbs for later use. Many indoor herb gardeners begin by growing parsley, chives, oregano and basil, but you can experiment with just about any herb.

Transition Your Wardrobe for Spring
Such sudden changes can be problematic, as not everyone has the room to store multiple seasons’ worth of clothing in their closets and drawers. Yet, with a little ingenuity, men and women can make their seasonal wardrobe transitions a little easier. Layering: Layering is the key to keeping comfortable no matter the weather. Layering enables you to take off layers or put them on as needed. Lightweight sweaters or blazers can be worn over short sleeves or sleeveless ensembles when temperatures have yet to reach their midday highs. Layers also can prove invaluable in office settings where the air conditioning may make working environments especially chilly. Leggings can be worn under skirts or dresses and then removed as temperatures rise. Long-Sleeved Shirts: Keep a few long-sleeved shirts at the ready. Simple sleeve length can mean the difference between comfort and discomfort. Covering shoulders and/or arms with a lightweight top also can protect against the rays of the sun. Choose among your most versatile long-sleeved shirts,
meaning basic colors that will blend well with any outfit. Bright Colors: Bright colors go hand in hand with warm weather. Keep bright-colored items you typically wear during other seasons so they can be paired, if necessary, with summer staples. This may include a thick sweater for cooler nights on the beach or trousers for formal evenings out on the town. Maxidresses: When shopping, invest in maxidresses. They’re easy and cool for hot days and nights, but they also can be refashioned if you wear them with long sleeves or knit sweaters. When covering up, use a waistcinching belt or scarf to add structure to the look. Vary Shoes: While flip-flops and other sandals may be summer staples, have a few other pairs of more traditional shoes at the ready as well. One can get away with boots with a maxi-dress. Ballet-style slippers are delicate enough for the season and provide extra foot coverage for comfort. If you walk a lot, look for shoes with structure, as summer footwear tends to provide less support than footwear worn during other times of the year. Transitioning clothing from one season to the next takes a little ingenuity. While it may not require a person to keep all of his or her clothing out of storage, transitioning from one season to the next may require reserving a couple of versatile items that can be worn throughout the year.

Six Easy Spring Cleaning Projects Warmer days are here, and what better way to spend them than … cleaning? Although enjoying the great outdoors is probably high on many a to-do list come spring, by the end of winter, homes can probably do with a much-needed overhaul. Owners and renters can rely on temperate days to throw open the windows and engage in some easy spring-cleaning projects. The earlier one begins spring cleaning, the more quickly he or she will be able to head outside and bask in the warm spring sun. Spring cleaning tasks can be stretched out across several days to make the jobs more manageable. While certain spring cleaning tasks can be timeconsuming, many projects can be started and completed in 30 minutes or less.

Look Up Start by looking up at ceilings, molding and ceiling fans. Chances are strong that some cobwebs and dust have formed in these areas. Always begin cleaning by working from the top downward so you don’t have to clean any tables, countertops or floors twice. Static-charged dusting cloths work well to catch and contain dust. Use a pillowcase on ceiling fan blades to clear the dust and keep it from cascading to the floor. Blinds and Curtains Heavy window treatments can be removed and replaced with more gauzy fabrics. This lets in more light and warmth from the sun. Many curtains can be freshened up right in the laundry, but blinds may require a bit more effort. If the blinds can be snapped out of the brackets, place them in a tub full of vinegar, dish soap and water. Allow them to soak and then rinse with the shower nozzle.
Stationary blinds can be cleaned with using an old sock over your hand dipped in a vinegar-andwater solution. Change Linens Remove and launder bed linens. While the linens are in the wash, thoroughly dust all furniture and vacuum the carpets. Move furniture so you can reach areas where dust gathers, such as under the bed or dresser. Grout Cleaner Grade school science lessons can be put to use as you look to remove stubborn dirt. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces a reaction that causes the formation of gassy bubbles. These bubbles can help to break up dirt that clings to crevices, such as grout between tiles. Some light scrubbing and then subsequent rinsing can rid surfaces of hardto-remove dirt. Vacuum Vent Intakes Many houses are heated by forced-air systems. The air intake vents can become clogged with dust and other debris. Vacuum these vents so that air flow is not impeded. Let the heat run for a few minutes to catch any small particles that become dislodged, and then change the furnace filter. Clean Out the Refrigerator Now is a great time to remove any of those mystery containers growing fuzzy experiments in the back of the refrigerator. Take the food out of the refrigerator and use a food-safe cleaner to scour the shelves and inside of crisper drawers. Spring cleaning is a necessary task, but it doesn’t have to be a headache. Break up the work into manageable chunks of time, and projects won’t feel like such a hassle.
