Keep Kids Engaged through Summer Vacation “Summer Slide” is a term parents may hear at the end of the school year. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with playground activities. Rather, “summer slide” refers to knowledge gained during the school year that may be lost over the duration of summer break. The National Summer Learning Association says many students lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in math computation skills over the summer. Students tend to score lower on standardized tests after summer vacation than they do when the same tests are taken at the onset of summer. Minds left to sit idle can haunt children when it’s time to return to the classroom. But parents who engage kids throughout the summer and reinforce educationally sound activities can prevent summer slide. Make vacations educational. Visit a locale kids have studied in class and explore its culture and traditions. Offer plenty of reading materials. Reading can expand children’s minds and help them build and maintain their vocabulary. Ask teachers for work packets. Students can stay on top of their studies by doing some light schoolwork throughout the summer. This can reinforce lessons kids have already learned and keep their minds sharp. Purchase a journal. Encourage kids to write about their summer adventures in a journal. Chances are their teachers will ask about summer vacations and may require an essay when students return to school. Summer Fun Close to Home Summer is prime vacation season when travelers take trips to every corner of the world. While faraway destinations abound, those looking for fun can also find enjoyable activities much closer to home. Many communities come alive during the warmer weather, hosting an array of locally driven events. People looking for a day of entertainment or an evening of excitement may be able to find an event that’s just a short car ride away. Pick up a local newspaper or log on to your town’s official website to browse a listing of events in your community this summer. Here are a few events you’re bound to find: Carnivals and fun fairs: Open land or empty parking lots can be transformed into bustling carnivals in a matter of days. Carnivals or fairs may be sponsored by private businesses or local religious organizations looking to raise funds. Some fairs are established by the county and attract participants from near and far. Carnivals often boast a wide array of entertainment, from amusement park-style rides to games of chance to music. Summer concert series: Summer concert series typically begin when the weather warms up, and music may not stop playing until Labor Day. Concerts may range from more intimate affairs that attract a few dozen people to a town square to larger events
at beaches and boardwalks that draw thousands of visitors. Food festivals: Various towns close down their Main Streets from time to time to accommodate food festivals that feature a variety of cuisines. Some food festivals may feature one ingredient, such as garlic or cheese, while others may delve deeper and offer broader menus. Food festivals allow visitors to sample many different treats and may serve to advertise for neighborhood eating establishments. Street fairs: Street fairs also may close down thoroughfares in town. These events usually bring together a variety of vendors selling their wares in an open market setting. You can make a day of touring all of the vendor booths and buying handmade items from local artisans. Outdoor movies: Local parks frequently host summer movie nights when participants can view a movie on the big screen while under the stars. This can be an informal way to get the entire family together for a fun flick. Films are typically family-friendly, and schedules are available well in advance. Bring a blanket and some snacks and enjoy an inexpensive evening together. Many people need not travel far for a little summertime fun, as many communities host fun events throughout the warmer months.

Garden-Inspired Decor Many homeowners take up gardening to transform their homes with beautiful flowers and foliage, while others do so to yield fresh fruits and vegetables. But gardening can be more than just a weekend hobby. In fact, it may be especially beneficial for homeowners to surround themselves with more plants and natural decor, whether in the yard or in the home. Studies have indicated that gardening can be good for the mind and body. If reaping the benefit of a beautiful landscape is not reason enough to get into gardening, elevating your mood and coping with depression or illness may be even further motivation to start developing your green thumb. Home-design trends seem to be following suit, offering individuals more opportunities to surround themselves with potentially therapeutic plants. Explore these emerging and established garden décor trends to try in and around your home:
Living wall planters: A living wall planter can add greenery to any décor without taking up floor or table space. Ideal for outdoor structures, these planters can also be used indoors if you safeguard against leaks and dripping. A living wall planter is a framed device that houses plants in a manner that enables them to be vertically mounted to a wall surface. While there are commercially available models, you can create your own design and paint or stain it to match the existing décor. Use a soil-free potting substrate to avoid the mess that regular soil may create. Combining fish with gardening: Enjoy the best of two relaxing worlds by installing a water feature in your yard. Garden retailers offer ready-made kits that can make fast work of establishing a pond or other water feature in the backyard. Otherwise, there are plenty of water garden companies and installers who can suggest a design and put in your desired water features. Add fish suitable for outdoor life to your pond.
These include koi and certain goldfish varieties. Game fish are discouraged because they can destroy pond plants. If an outdoor pond is more maintenance than you desire, consider an indoor aquarium with a combination of fish and live aquarium plants. Creative furniture designs: Maybe you’re a person who appreciates the unique and whimsical? Tables, benches and chairs can be built with planting channels that enable you to have greenery and garden décor in one piece. Envision a picnic table with a cutout down the center for a thin row of plants or decorative grasses. This is a project the entire family can get behind, as the more creative ideas the better. Improved outdoor lighting: People who like to spend time in their gardens and yards may not want to be limited by sunrise and sunset. By incorporating different lighting sources, you can create a retreat that is welcoming at any hour. Although flood lights and overhead lights can illuminate
a space, consider ambient and decorative lighting to create the desired ambiance. Functional fire pits and places: A blazing fire creates a cozy spot to gather on chilly evenings, but fire pits and fireplaces can also be used as impromptu cooking spots for s’mores or frankfurters on a stick. You can purchase a standalone fire pit from any number of retailers or build your own with patio pavers and fire bricks to line the interior of the fire pit. Outdoor fireplaces require more work, and you want to hire a mason to ensure proper installation. Enjoyable yard additions: While plants and seating may take center stage, some people still want to have fun in their yards. There’s an increased demand for yard designs and décor that can put the fun in backyard living. Bocce courts, ring- or horseshoetoss setups, as well as bean bagtoss boards, can be incorporated into landscape designs, giving you yet another reason to spend a few hours in the great outdoors.

Pool Perimeter Landscaping With the rise of the “staycation,” more and more homeowners are turning their backyards into their own private oases. The centerpiece of many such retreats is a refreshing and inviting pool. Whether above-ground or inground models, pools make for welcoming spots to enjoy warm days and nights. While pools are often the focal point of a backyard, many homeowners want their pools to blend seamlessly with the rest of their yards. When transforming a backyard that includes a pool, homeowners should consider a few factors to ensure each afternoon spent poolside is as safe as it is fun: Safety First Although the goal may be to soften the lines of the pool and/ or create sight barriers that will provide some measure of privacy for swimmers, homeowners must put safety above all else. Before any decorative touches are added, it is important to surround a pool with a slip-resistant
surface and fencing. Consult with a landscaping contractor, who should be knowledgeable about safety codes, or speak to the permit-issuing department at town hall. There should be a list of requirements to ensure pool placement, as well as any surrounding touches, are legal and within code. Nonslip Surfaces Concrete, brick and pavers and decking are popular materials used to surround a pool. Installers can make recommendations on materials and finishes, but one suggestion is to choose a rough finish. Pool water can make surfaces slippery. Concrete that is stamped or scarred provides extra traction than a smooth surface. The same can be said for brick patios and pavers. Avoid smooth stones or pavers with shiny surfaces, as these may only increase the risk of falls. Homeowners who have chosen wood or composite decking to surround a pool should talk to
their contractor about nonslip protective coatings. Such coatings typically are acrylic-based liquids applied like a paint or sealer. Some composite decks may be crafted with texture or a builtin coating to reduce slipping. In addition, use nonstick mats on decks and patios to provide a little extra footing where people enter and exit the pool. Mulch and Stone Homeowners often prefer some combination of mulch or stone to serve as a transition between the pool, concrete or paver hardscape and the lawn. Stone may be more practical for those with inground pools because it will not easily blow onto the water surface. With an above-ground pool, mulch or stone can do the trick, serving as a barrier so that pool water does not overly drench the surrounding lawn or damage grass after exposure to pool chemicals. Mulch and stone also will provide drainage from water runoff from the pool and rain.
Another advantage of having an additional barrier between the pool and lawn is that lawn clippings will not be shot into the pool when mowing. Finishing Touches Plants can provide the finishing touches for a poolside landscape. Homeowners should keep in mind that pools are not often shaded from the sun, so plants placed around the pool will need to be sun- and drought-tolerant. Succulents, such as aloe and jade, may work, as can the perennial shrub yucca. Moderately growing grasses will offer a privacy barrier. Keep trees and flowering plants far enough away from the pool’s edge so they do not contribute to debris that falls into the pool, which can complicate maintenance. Also, flowering plants may attract insects and other wildlife that may interfere with your enjoyment of the pool. It’s better to create a friendly environment for wildlife further away from the pool.

Fourth of July Barbecue Essentials The 4th of July is fast approaching, and revelers across the nation are preparing to toast their independence with family and friends. For many Americans, backyard barbecues are synonymous with the Fourth of July, a day that, in the United States of America, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in 1776. Precious few Americans can say they have not been present at a 4th of July barbecue or witnessed a fireworks display honoring America’s official declaration of independence. Hosting a July 4th barbecue for the first time may have some hosts anxious about throwing a summer soirée to remember, but fun is sure to be had if hosts remember to include the following backyard barbecue essentials this Independence Day: Food No Fourth of July barbecue is complete without food, so hosts should be sure to stock
up on popular barbecue fare like hot dogs and hamburgers. Though such foods likely won’t be mistaken for gourmet fare anytime soon, 4th of July revelers often embrace the tradition of grilling up some hot dogs and hamburgers even if they tend to avoid such foods throughout the rest of the year. Hosts should not feel pressured to provide gourmet fare on July 4th, but it is a thoughtful gesture to ask guests in advance if they have any food allergies or need to avoid certain foods for other reasons. Beverages It goes without saying that guests will need refreshing beverages at parties held in early July, but be sure to stock up on a variety of beverages so guests are not forced to consume drinks they don’t want. What is Clean Eating All About? Clean eating is a growing trend among people focused on health and wellness. A relatively simple concept of selecting foods that are minimally processed, clean eating intends to instill a greater understanding of the pathway between a food’s origins and the final products that end up on grocery store shelves and dinner tables. Choosing whole or “real” foods that are as close to their natural forms as possible is a staple of clean eating. The availability of convenience food products has never been greater, and not all packaged foods are unhealthy. But clean eating encourages consumers to be more aware of the ingredients in the foods they eat while selecting those foods that are minimally processed. Many foods designated as “clean,” including vegetables and fruits, whole grains, free-range meats, low-fat dairy products, unsalted nuts and whole seeds, are straight from the farm. Another component of clean eating is eliminating or greatly reducing the consumption of refined sugar. Many health experts advise that refined sugar is a large contributor to unnecessary calories. Many people can get all the energy they need by consuming foods with natural sugars. If an ingredient list includes names you cannot recognize, or if the natural form of the food
has been changed (i.e. removing the bran from whole grains), it cannot be included in a clean-eating plan. Also, foods that have a lot of additives, including salt, sugar and fat, are not classified as clean. Not all food processing is bad. Processing is sometimes necessary to prevent pathogens that can lead to illness. For example, pasteurizing milk is a processing method, but one that is necessary to stop the proliferation of bacteria. Coast through Summer with Thrills and Chills
Many historians credit Russians with inventing the first roller coasters, which may have been inspired by Russian ice slides. However, others suggest it was the French who first added wheels to slides and therefore created something that resembles the modern-day roller coaster. LaMarcus Adna Thompson, an American inventor widely considered the father of gravity rides, obtained a patent for roller coasters on January 20th, 1885. Thompson worked on Switchback Railway, which opened at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York in 1884. Coney Island would one day become home to another historical roller coaster when, in June of 1927, the Cyclone opened. Still functional to this day, the Cyclone has been declared a New York City
landmark. Today, roller coasters are found all over the world, and North America plays home to several top-rated roller coasters. Thrill seekers can make summer pilgrimages to amusement parks to determine if the following coasters live up to their reputations: Leviathan: The Leviathan coaster is located at Canada’s Wonderland in Ontario. It makes top roller coaster lists because of its size and speed. Leviathan can travel 92 mph (140 km/h). Millenium Force: This thrilling coaster in Ohio’s Cedar Point Park reaches a maximum height of 310 feet and can top speeds of 93 mph. Amusement Today magazine routinely ranks this coaster as one of the best in the world. The Desperado: Riders can plummet 225 feet at 80 mph on this coaster, located at Buffalo Bill’s Casino in Nevada. Expect some

New Texas Giant: For many years, visitors to Six Flags Over Texas enjoyed the famed wooden roller coaster, “Texas Giant.” But, over the years, the ride became rough and uncomfortable so, in 2011, the park unveiled the New Texas Giant after an 18-month refurbishment to replace the track with steel.

Outdoor Dining Tips Dining outdoors when the weather is warm can make for a pleasant change of pace. While certain aspects of eating outside can be enticing, Mother Nature can sometimes complicate the experience. Wind is one challenge to dining outside, as diners may find themselves chasing paper napkins or airborne plastic cups on windy afternoons or evenings. To safeguard against the wind, rely on reusable, heavy plastic items that are less likely to blow away in the wind. Also, keep tablecloths in place with a
few supplies. Use a grommet-making tool to punch holes into the tablecloth and attach plastic or metal grommets. Place the tablecloth on the table and slip a thin bungee cord fastener to a grommet on the underside of the table. Stretch the cord across to a grommet on the other side of the tablecloth and secure. Two or three sets of grommets and bungee cords may be all you need to keep the tablecloth in place and enjoy an interruption-free meal outside.

Pitch In to Keep Beaches Clean Visiting the beach is a great way to cool off from the summer heat. But many beaches are not as clean as they can be, and such pollution can jeopardize beach visitors and the animals that call beaches home. Litter that finds its way into storm drains may one day end up on beaches and in oceans. The Southern California Coastal Water Research Project says that plastic is the most common type of waste found on beaches. Plastic pellets are the most abundant type of trash found along the California coast, but foam plastics and hard plastics are also abundant on beaches, both in Southern California and across the country. Cigarette butts and paper trash also pose a threat. Trash can be harmful to all sorts of coastal and marine life. Many animals eat the trash, mistaking
it for food. But animals cannot always digest trash, which can fill up the stomach and digestive tract, ultimately leading to starvation. Animals also may get tangled in trash and be unable to walk, swim or fly away. Trash also may contain harmful chemicals that poison animals and may inadvertently end up harming humans who eat different sea creatures. In addition to being mindful of litter and properly disposing of items at home, eco-conscious men, women and children can join forces with beach cleanup initiatives to help remove tons of trash from beaches across the globe. Cleanup groups typically consist of volunteers who sweep beaches in ongoing efforts to address waste and keep beaches clean. Volunteers can visit the Ocean Conservancy website (www. oceanconservancy.org) to find a beach cleanup initiative near them.

Navigating the Rehearsal Dinner to provide a variety of food so no one goes home hungry.
Rehearsal dinners are a fun wedding tradition that typically take place the night before a couple walks down the aisle. The immediate families of the bride and groom, as well as any additional members of the wedding party, are on hand for the rehearsal dinner, which often follows a walk-through of the wedding ceremony.
Booking If you are hosting a rehearsal dinner at a restaurant, booking a reservation should be near the top of your priority list once you have chosen a date for the wedding. It’s not always easy to find restaurants that can accommodate especially large parties, nor is it easy to find restaurants that can accommodate the unique diets of potential party guests. So try to book a reservation three to six months in advance of the dinner. If you are getting married during an especially popular month to tie the knot, such as June or October, try to make the reservation even earlier, as the longer you wait, the more likely other couples will have booked the restaurant for their rehearsal dinners. Starting early also gives you more time to find the ideal restaurant to host.

Smoke-Roasted Bell Peppers Stuffed with Green Garden Veggies Grillmasters know that grilling for friends and family is about more than just burgers and hot dogs. For those who want to add some more flavorful fare to their backyard barbecues, the following recipe for Smoke-Roasted Bell Peppers Stuffed with Green Garden Vegetables is sure to please guests and grillmasters alike: Makes 8 small servings
INGREDIENTS 2 medium red bell peppers 3 medium mixed bell peppers (yellow, orange, green) 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 3 tablespoons butter 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium zucchini, cut into 1/4-inch dice 1 medium yellow squash, cut into 1/4-inch dice 2 cups fresh or frozen corn kernels 1 medium tomato, seeded and cut into 1/4-inch dice 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley, oregano, basil or a mix) 1/4 cup plain dried bread crumbs Oil for coating grill 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
The Grill Gas: Indirect heat, medium (325 F to 350 F) 3- or 4-burner grill -middle burners off 2-burner grill -- 1 side off Clean, oiled grate Charcoal: Indirect heat, medium ash Split charcoal bed (about 2 dozen coals per side) Clean, oiled grate on medium setting
skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and saute until almost tender, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic, chopped bell pepper, zucchini and yellow squash. Saute the vegetables until crisp-tender, about 4 minutes. Stir in the corn and tomato and cook until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in herbs, bread crumbs and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cook and stir until the bread crumbs soak up most of the liquid in the pan. Remove from the heat and spoon the filling equally into the pepper cavities. When the grill is hot, put the soaked wood chips or chunks over the coals on both sides of the grill. If using gas, put the wood chips in a smoker box or in a perforated foil packet directly over one of the heated burners. Brush the grill grate and coat it with oil. Put the stuffed peppers over the unheated part of the grill, cover and cook until just tender, 20 to 30 minutes. If your grill has a temperature gauge, it should stay at around 350º F. Remove the peppers to a large serving platter. Sprinkle with the Parmesan (if using) and serve.
DIRECTIONS Heat the grill as directed. Soak the wood chips or chunks for 1 hour. Seed, core and cut one of the red bell peppers into 1/4-inch dice. Cut the remaining bell peppers in half lengthwise right through the stem, leaving a bit of stem attached to each half. Cut out the cores, seeds and ribs from the interiors of the peppers, leaving the stem intact. Sprinkle the insides of the peppers with 1/4 teaspoon of the salt and 1/4 teaspoon of the pepper. Extreme heat can be unpleasant for anyone, and pets are no exception. While it’s easy for men and women to detect if their bodies are responding negatively to heat, those warning signs may not be so prevalent in pets, who may suffer in silence as the mercury continues to rise.

Pet owners must pay special attention to their pets on hot days, which the Humane Society of the United States notes can be both uncomfortable and dangerous for pets. In an effort to help pet owners protect their pets from the summer heat, the HSUS offers the following tips to pet owners who want to keep their pets cool and safe this summer: Don’t leave pets in a parked car. The temperature inside a vehicle can quickly approach dangerous levels on hot days, so pet owners should never leave their pets in parked cars, even if they leave the air conditioning on and the engine running. The HSUS notes that on an 85-degree day, temperatures inside cars with slightly cracked windows can reach 102 degrees in as little as 10 minutes. Rather than taking pets with you on car trips, leave them at home inside a comfortably air-conditioned room where they won’t be vulnerable to rising temperatures.

How to Protect Your Pets from Extreme Heat
Change pets’ exercise regimen. Pet owners who make sure their pets get daily exercise should change such routines when temperatures are on the rise. Midday walks or jogs should be switched to evenings or early mornings, when temperatures tend to be at their most moderate. In addition, cut back on the time spent exercising, as pets may have trouble breathing on hot days. When taking your dog for a jog or a run in the summertime, do so on the grass, avoiding asphalt, as hot asphalt can do significant damage to your pet’s paws. Be mindful of your breed. Dog owners should recognize that certain dogs can handle the heat better than others. Shortnosed breeds have a harder time in extreme heat because their shorter airways don’t allow as much time for the air they breathe in to cool as dogs with

Doghouses might not be as prevalent as they once were, but many owners still keep doghouses in their backyards so their four-legged friends have a place to relax outdoors on lazy afternoons. But doghouses can be similar to parked cars on especially hot days, making rising temperatures feel even hotter. Let dogs hang out inside in an airconditioned room on hot days to reduce their risk of heatstroke. Learn to recognize the signs of heatstroke. Pets suffering from heatstroke will exhibit certain symptoms, and pet owners who learn to recognize those symptoms can do something about them before it’s too late. Heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst and lack of coordination are just a few potential indicators that a pet is suffering from heatstroke. Animals that are very old, very young, overweight and unaccustomed to prolonged exercise, as well as those who have heart or respiratory conditions, are especially susceptible to heatstroke.
