Begin by shopping the sales. Some people save money by stocking up on wrapping supplies at the end of the holiday season. Those who do not look so far ahead may want to buy gift wrap and bags when these items first appear on the shelves, which affords shoppers a larger selection to choose from. Although you may be tempted to go for the least expensive wrapping paper available, investing in something a little thicker may make wrapping easier, as thicker paper is less likely to tear. Select one or two paper designs so you do not have to think too much about which paper to use for which gifts. When shopping, also grab a substantial supply of tape because you will need a lot of it. You probably will have some nonsymmetrical shaped gifts or ones that could get swallowed up in a lot of wrapping paper. You may want to choose bags or gift boxes to wrap such items.
Get creative with gift bags by purchasing solid-color bags and using stamps to dress up the design. This way, the wrapping looks like it was customized for each recipient. Let kids help, as they may have fun adding ribbon or bows to dress up gifts even further. Set up a dedicated spot to tackle the wrapping. Perhaps you want to wrap everything in one sitting, or maybe you will wrap each gift as you make new purchases. Either way, keeping supplies at the ready and organized can make wrapping go more quickly. Wrapping paper and ribbon can be stored on a modified towel rack that hangs over the back of a door, or invest in a wrapping paper storage container so everything will be together when the time comes to begin wrapping. A folding table or even an ironing rack can make for good horizontal surfaces on which to tackle the wrapping. Remember also to keep an envelope nearby with any gift receipts so that they can be included with the gifts as you wrap them. Holiday shoppers’ work doesn’t end after gifts are purchased. Now is the time for wrapping and stockpiling all of the supplies needed to make holiday gifts that much more attractive.
New Holiday Twists on Classic Hot Cocoa Few things are more comforting than sitting under a warm afghan and sipping a mug of steaming hot chocolate when cold wind and snow are blowing outside. Hot chocolate seems tailor-made for chilly winter evenings, providing the perfect indulgence while watching a favorite holiday film, entertaining friends around the holidays or warming up after a day spent building snowmen. The terms “hot chocolate” and “hot cocoa” are used interchangeably, but they actually refer to two different beverages. Hot chocolate is made from shaved solid chocolate, which contains both cocoa and cocoa butter. Hot cocoa is made from cocoa powder, which alone does not constitute full chocolate. Either drink can be delicious, and many people prefer one over the other. While traditional hot chocolate is a favorite for many, there are ways to make this beloved beverage more unique. By experimenting with flavor combinations, hot chocolate can become new again each day. The following are some flavorful ingredients you may want to try to spice up your next cup of hot chocolate: Caramel: Pair a rich, dark or semi-sweet hot chocolate with a swirl of caramel. The caramel will add sweetness and extra creaminess to the blend. Peppermint: Peppermint and hot chocolate can make for an interesting contrast. The cooling nature of peppermint works nicely with the heat of hot chocolate, imparting a wonderful aroma as well. Melt a candy cane or mint from a restaurant in the mug and

enjoy. Nutmeg: What nutmeg does for eggnog it also can do for hot chocolate. Nutmeg offers that earthy bite that calls to mind long days baking in the kitchen. Chile Powder: Chile can add a little kick to hot chocolate that works surprisingly well. Add just enough to offer a little tingle of residual heat at the back of your throat. This concoction also may help clear up a case of congestion or the sniffles. Coffee: Add a splash of coffee to the hot chocolate for an instant boost of caffeine and some mocha flavoring. Whipped Cream: Create the flavor combination of a chocolate cream pie with a generous dollop of whipped cream. For a truly rich flavor, make a batch of fresh whipped cream, which will also thicken the hot chocolate. Coconut Milk: Invoke the tropics by substituting coconut milk for regular milk. You may feel like you’re on your own private island. Peanut Butter: Few people can resist the combination of chocolate and peanut butter. Melt a spoonful of peanut butter into the beverage and enjoy.

Agree to spending limits. Come the holiday season, many people overspend on gifts for their immediate family members. Before shopping season begins, speak with members of your immediate family to discuss spending limits on gifts, agreeing that you each won’t spend more than an agreed upon amount of dollars on gifts for any one person. While it’s fun to scour stores looking for can’tmiss gifts for your loved ones, shopping amongst the crowds also can prove hectic. While online shopping has made department stores somewhat less crowded come the holiday
season, the National Retail Federation notes that online shopping during the 2014 holiday season accounted for just one-sixth of all holiday shopping. The opportunity to see and feel potential gifts in person compels many people to do the majority of their holiday shopping in-store, and there are ways for such shoppers to avoid the holiday shopping rush as they begin their quests for the perfect gifts: Shop during off-peak hours. Weekends and weeknight evenings tend to be the busiest times to go holiday shopping. Professionals who have weekends off may put off their shopping during the week, choosing to do so on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when they have extra time to browse and comparison shop. Shopping off-peak hours, such as during weekday mornings or even early mornings

Small local businesses may not boast the inventory of larger retailers you’re liable to encounter at the mall, but local small businesses tend to deal with thinner crowds than national stores during the holiday season. In one of Judaism’s most central texts, Maccabee and others witnessed a miracle at the temple. Even though there was only enough oil to keep a menorah’s candles burning for one day, the flames continued for eight nights. Traditionally, gelt, or money, was given as a Hanukkah gift. Many Hanukkah gift givers aim to give gifts that are thoughtful and sweet. Money is not exchanged as much today, with other gifts taking its place. Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is an American holiday that pays homage to traditions and cultural influences from Africa. The holiday was developed in 1966 by Maulana Ndabezitha Karenga. The focus of Kwanzaa is on family and the harvest as well as certain principles, such as unity and faith. Gifts make up one of the seven symbols of Kwanzaa celebrations. Hanging Stockings with Care Mantles adorned with garland and other holiday trinkets make fireplaces come alive for Christmas. That magic is only enhanced by hanging Christmas stockings, which are just waiting to be filled with goodies for good girls and boys. Those without a fireplace often hang stockings from windowsills and stairway banisters. No written record exists to explain the origin of hanging stockings on fireplace mantles. Despite this, many people link the tradition to a tale about St. Nicholas. As that story goes, St. Nicholas was traveling through a village when he overheard the plight of three women. They were poor, and their father could not afford an ample dowry to marry them off. Rather than have them end up spinsters, St. Nicholas secretly tossed bags of coins through a window (or down the chimney, depending on which version of the story you read or hear), and they were captured in the girls’ stockings hanging to dry by the fire. The family was
overjoyed to have received such riches. Soon news traveled about the mysterious money in stockings, and other children left out stockings for St. Nicholas to capture their own gifts. The tradition has transformed over the years, and now many children hang stockings by the chimney with the expectation that the stockings will be filled with gifts from Santa. Traditions once suggested that only gifts from Santa were left in stockings, while gifts placed beneath the tree were from family, but that has since changed. Stockings are now meant to hold small gifts while larger items are placed under the tree. Stockings should be hung away from the flames of the fire as a safety precaution. Some children even like to hang individual stockings on their bedposts instead of on a fireplace mantle.

It is difficult to think of Christmas without envisioning everything awash in these popular colors, broken up only by the inclusion of gold, white or silver accents.
The colors of Christmas are often taken for granted, and many
celebrants are unaware of how these colors became symbols of the holiday season and why they remain so to this day.
Several theories exist as to why red and green became the hallmarks of Christmas. One such theory is that the colors evolved from pagan celebrations similar to the evolution of Christmas traditions. Some theorize that the red of the holiday season represents the apples on the tree of paradise in the Garden of Eden. Around the 14th century, the faithful would put on Paradise Plays on December 24th to share the story of creation with those who could not read. It

Poinsettias are a relatively recent addition to Christmas symbolism, as they were only first introduced to America in 1828, when they were brought back from Mexico by Joel Poinsett. If you want to see some of the most extravagant Christmas light displays, you should make the trip to the Dyker Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. Many of the Christmas light displays are done professionally, and they tend to evolve each year in an unspoken effort to “outdo” each other. In addition to over-the-top Christmas lights, there are large inflatable Christmas decorations and even motorized Christmas displays. Dyker Heights welcomes 100,000 visitors each December who come to bask in the glow of these amazing Christmas decorations. Some displays go up right after Thanksgiving, but for the best viewing, visit in mid-December. Displays on weekends tend to be better than on weeknights. Visit between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. for the most intense lighting, before folks turn off the lights for the evening. Dyker Heights ranges from 11th Avenue to 13th Avenue, and from 83rd Street to 86th Street. The two blocks with the densest decorations are 83rd and 84th Streets between 11th and 12th Avenues. If you’re driving to the area, parking is easiest along the avenue blocks.Dress for the weather or prepare for slow-going in your car as folks ogle the lights while they drive!

Tips to Keep Poinsettias Looking Pretty Along with the fragrant evergreens and twinkling lights synonymous with the holiday season, poinsettias make up a key component of holiday decorating. Unlike holly and some of the other greenery that is commonly associated with the holidays, poinsettias do not naturally thrive in the colder temperatures. These plants originate in southern Mexico and were considered an exotic plant when first introduced to the United States by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first American ambassador to Mexico. Poinsettias can be fickle plants and ones that gardening novices may find challenging to maintain. The plants are comprised of green foliage, colorful (often red) flower bracts and the actual flowers of the plants, which are the red or green buttonlike parts nestled in the center of the bracts. Because they are a tropical plant, poinsettias can be damaged by exposure to low temperatures, even if they are only exposed for short periods of time. They should be wrapped and protected against the elements when brought home. For maximum plant life, poinsettias need to be placed near a warm, sunny window, or another area that has ample amounts of light. They thrive in temperatures between 60 and 75º F and should be kept away from warm or cold drafts. Water the plant whenever the surface feels dry to the touch. Water until it drains out the bottom, but don’t let the plant sit in water. Over- or under-watering can cause leaves to drop prematurely and wilt. If your home lacks

in humidity, you may need to water the plant more frequently. Poinsettias do not need to be fertilized while the plant is in bloom. Poinsettias can be reflowered the following Christmas, but unless a yearlong schedule of care is observed, the results usually are not good. You can speak with a gardening expert or consult online resources for the proper care schedule. Caring for a poinsettia year-round involves gradually drying out the plant and storing it in a cool location. The plant later will be moved outdoors and then back inside and pruned to keep a full shape. Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they flower about 10 weeks after the daylight shortens to about 12 hours or less. Therefore, to have the plant in full flower by Christmas, it will have to be kept in complete darkness between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. from the first part of October until Thanksgiving. Many people find the affordability of poinsettias makes it more convenient to buy new ones each year than try to foster regrowth. Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans or animals, but they should not be ingested due to the potential for allergic reactions. Poinsettias can help remove pollutants from indoor air, which is advantageous during the winter months when doors and windows are typically kept closed. Select plants that have dark green foliage and no low or damaged leaves. This ensures the best success for keeping poinsettias looking healthy and vibrant throughout the holiday season.

Stay Healthy This Holiday Season With the holiday season upon us, many people’s schedules are hectic once again. There are social events and family gatherings to attend, shopping ventures to make and decorating to be done. While fun, the holiday season can be a time of added pressure, which leads to stress and other unhealthy situations.
You can still feel your best during the holidays. Follow these tips for maintaining a healthy mind and body:
At a time when you want to be at your best, stress can affect your physical well-being. More people are inclined to feel that their stress increases, rather than decreases, around the holidays.
Get the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine can protect you against various strains of the flu. Get a flu shot before the holidays so you are ready for cold and flu season.
Stress is not the only potential health hazard that can arise around the holidays. A greater number of parties expose you to an abundance of foods and drinks you may not consume on a regular basis, and that can lead to a lot of mindless eating. Weight gained during this time of year can be difficult to shed come January, when colder temperatures challenge many peoples’ motivation to exercise.
Carry disinfecting wipes. Germs can linger on surfaces long after an infected person has come and gone. Studies have found the flu virus - and even the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA - on airline tray tables. Buses, trains and doors all may be harboring germs. Wipe down surfaces with disinfecting wipes and allow them to air-dry before touching them. This can help you avoid coming into contact with germs.
Also, social settings put you in close contact with a greater number of people, potentially increasing your exposure to germs.

Holiday films hold a special place in many people’s hearts, and perhaps no holiday movie of the last 30 years has resonated as much as National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The oft-quoted holiday favorite turned 25 years old in 2014, yet the film remains as popular as ever. Fans of Christmas Vacation can no doubt quote their favorite lines from the film, but the following are a few tidbits that even the most ardent Vacation fan might be unfamiliar with: The movie is based on a story titled “Christmas 59,” which was written by the same man, John Hughes, who wrote and produced the film. The film pays homage to this story when Clark Griswold is rummaging through the attic and finds a movie reel named “Christmas 59.”

Frank Capra III worked as an assistant director on the film. In one scene of the film, It’s a Wonderful Life, which was directed by Frank Capra III’s grandfather, is on a television in the background. Actress Mae Questrel (Aunt Bethany) provided the voices for Betty Boop and Olive Oyl in the 1930s. Christmas Vacation would be her final film. Christmas Vacation featured a handful of “Saturday Night Live” alumni. In addition to the film’s star, Chevy Chase, SNL alums Randy Quaid, Julia LouisDreyfus and Brian Doyle-Murray appeared in the film.
The role of Cousin Rocky had no lines in the film. In the Lampoon films that preceded Christmas Vacation, Rusty was the older child of the Griswold clan. However, he is the younger sibling in this film. Christmas Vacation marked the directorial debut for Jeremiah Chechik, who went on to direct Benny & Joon and 1998’s The Avengers. The movie had a large budget ($27 million) for a comedy with no special effects. Surprisingly, Christmas Vacation had its own sequel that few are familiar with. The made-fortelevision National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure was released in 2003. Cousin Eddie’s fashion style, in particular the sweater/Dickie combination, was the brainchild of actor Randy Quaid’s wife. No part of Christmas Vacation takes place on Christmas Day. The film culminates with the antics that take place at the Griswold home on December 24. Brian Doyle-Murray, who played Frank Shirley, is the brother of another famous comic actor: Bill Murray. Christmas Vacation was the only movie in the series up until then that did not feature Lindsey Buckingham’s song, “Holiday Road.”
Time-Saving Meal Tips for the Rush Much of the holiday season can seem like a blur, during which busy men and women spend much of their time running here and there. Holiday supplies need to be purchased, homes need to be decorated and gifts must be bought and wrapped. During the busy holiday season, men and women pressed for time may be tempted to turn to the convenience of fast food come mealtime. While these fast foods may be convenient, the cost of dining out each night and the lack of adequate nutrition may not justify the convenience. But no matter how busy men and women may be during the holiday season, there are still ways to eat healthy meals that don’t take much time to prepare. Prep Work Meal preparation can take a lot of time. But buying ingredients in advance, and saving the trouble of last-minute trips to the grocery store, can make prep work go much more smoothly and quickly.
Devote some time on the weekend to stocking up on ingredients you will need for the week ahead. Stock up on storage containers so that food can be packaged into the refrigerator or freezer. Prepare rice and parboil pasta to use as a starchy and filling base to some recipes. Peel, dice and chop vegetables and store in containers for later use during the week. Separate meat and poultry into smaller, meal-sized containers so you only thaw out what you need for a given meal. Have a Plan Create a menu plan so you will know which recipes to create and when. Build room into your meal plan for really quick meals, such as a soup and sandwich night or breakfast for dinner. Planning a meal weekly meal schedule saves you time because you won’t be searching for recipes each weeknight. Such planning also helps you to ensure there’s plenty of variety in your weekly meals.
Seek Help from Slow Cookers A slow cooker can be a real time-saver during the holiday season. Slow cookers can be set to cook while you’re out of the house. When you return, you will find the meal ready and waiting. Slow cookers are very popular, and as a result it’s easy to find recipes both online and in cookbooks. Slow cookers can be used to prepare sauces, soups, roasts, casseroles and so much more. To make slow cookers even more convenient, prepackage ingredients for recipes in advance, storing them in a plastic zip-top bag. Then simply pour the ingredients into the slow cooker in the morning before leaving for work. Expand Your Horizons A meal need not always be a three-course offering. On days you expect to be particularly busy, plan for a no-heat meal. Cold cut sandwiches and salad can fit the bill. A platter of finger foods, such as cheeses and crackers, fruit, and vegetable
sticks with dips, can be filling as well. If the kids are requesting a bowl of cereal, let them have it and save time. Eggs and reheated leftovers and quick and easy to prepare. Dine Out Budget for a few meals on the go. When shopping at the mall, stop into a restaurant for a sit-down meal. Doing so will save time and you can enjoy a respite from cooking.

Eastern Redcedar: Branches of the tree are compact and form a pyramid-shaped crown. The trees should be a dark, shiny green color. The eastern redcedar is not a true cedar tree, but a member of the juniper family. This tree can make a great cut tree with a homespun look and a pungent fragrance. Leyland Cypress: This cypress is one of the more popular Christmas trees in the southeastern United States. The tree will be very dark green to almost gray in color. It has little aroma. Another popular pine, the rich fragrance of the white pine may make it preferable to those who like their homes to smell of evergreen. Douglas Fir: The Douglas fir is one of the foremost Christmas tree species in the United States. It has soft needles that are dark green in color. Those needles radiate in all directions from the branches to give the tree a full look. The needles, when crushed, have a sweet fragrance. Douglas firs tend to live long when cut. Fraser Fir: Another popular fir for Christmas is the Fraser fir. The needles are bicolored, with dark green on top and silver on the bottom. More fragrant than its cousin, the Douglas, the Fraser also boasts a slender profile, which makes it suitable for smaller rooms. Christmas Tree Maintenance Nothing can guarantee the health and appearance of a tree after it is brought into a home. But choosing a recently cut tree that has good needle retention can help. Here are other tips for a long-lasting tree: Use a sharp saw to cut an inch off of the trunk base to remove the sappy covering that forms from cutting. This will improve water intake. Fill a tree stand reservoir with warm water. Expect the tree to drink heavily in the beginning. Keep the reservoir filled every day and check to see how much water the tree is using.

In 2014, Time magazine researched records at the U.S. Copyright Office to determine the most popular and most recorded Christmas songs since 1978, when copyright registrations were digitized. The following are some of the more beloved holiday tunes and a bit of history about each song: Silent Night - One of the most rerecorded songs in history (733 versions since 1978), “Silent Night,” was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and put to lyrics by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a village in Austria. Today’s version is a slow lullaby, but it’s believed the original was a dance-like tune in 6/8 time. O Holy Night - This popular song was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to a French poem titled, “Minuit, chréatiens (Midnight, Christians).” Many notable performers, including Perry Como, Céline Dion, Josh Groban, Michael Crawford and Lea Michele, have performed “O Holy Night.”

White Christmas - Irving Berlin believed his song “White Christmas” would be an instant hit. His prediction was correct, especially after singer Bing Crosby recorded it. Jingle Bells - Although it has become one of the more popular Christmas songs, “Jingle Bells” really was written for Thanksgiving. It’s also one of the oldest holiday songs of American origin. James Lord Pierpont, the song’s author, was inspired by the famous sleigh races of Medford, Massachusetts. Do You Hear What I Hear Noel Regney wrote this song as a call to peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The original context has long been forgotten, and “Do You Hear What I Hear” is now a staple of holiday celebrations. Santa Claus is Coming to Town - James Gillespie wrote this tune while riding a subway and reminiscing about his childhood with his brother. It became a hit after being performed at the famed Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Christmas Song - This classic Christmas song was written in 1944 by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé. It’s usually subtitled “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” The song was written during a heat wave as a way to think cool thoughts. It only took 40 minutes to write the music and some of the lyrics. Nat King Cole’s rendition of the song is among the more popular versions. Christmas songs are enjoyed and performed year after year. Popular songs continue to endure and attract new fans.
Silver Bells - Now a Christmas classic, “Silver Bells” originally was written for the Bob Hope film, “The Lemon Drop Kid.” Songwriter Jay Livingston wanted to title the song “Tinkle Bell,” but his wife dissuaded him from using the word “tinkle.”

French Apple Pie While fresh apples are a delight on their own, few apple afficionados can resist the temptation to make apple pie. If homemade apple pie is on your agenda this year, consider the following recipe: Makes one 9-inch pie
Ingredients:
1 recipe Plain Pie Pastry (see below) Raisin Filling 3/4 cup raisins 6 tablespoons water 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1/4 cup light corn syrup 11/2 teaspoons all-purpose flour 11/2 teaspoons sugar 2 apples (preferably a tart variety) 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 11/2 teaspoons cornstarch
Icing 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon butter, softened
Directions:
To make the raisin filling, combine the raisins, water and lemon juice in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally until the raisins are plump, about 15 minutes. Separately, combine the corn syrup, flour and sugar and mix well, then add to the raisins and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until thick and syrupy, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool until the mixture is just warm, about 10 to 15 minutes.
Spread the apple mixture in the crust in an even layer, then spread the raisin filling evenly over the apples. Brush the rim of the crust with water, cover with the second rolled-out crust, seal and flute or crimp the edges, and cut a steam vent in the center. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack for 1 to 2 hours, until completely cool. To make the icing, combine the sugar and water and mix well. Add the butter and mix until smooth. Brush over the top of the cooled pie before serving.
Plain Pie Pastry Makes two 9-inch pie crusts
Preheat the oven to 400º F. Line a 9-inch pie plate with 1 rolled-out crust. Peel the apples, cut them into thin wedges, and put them in a large bowl. Separately, combine the sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and cornstarch, then add to the apples and gently stir until evenly mixed.
2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup vegetable shortening 5 to 7 tablespoons cold milk Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until it is the size of small peas. Sprinkle 1
tablespoon of the milk over part of the flour mixture. Gently toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Sprinkle another tablespoon of milk over another dry part, toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Repeat with the remaining milk until all of the flour mixture is moistened. Press the dough together to form 2 equal balls, then flatten into disks. Roll out the crusts right away, or wrap the dough tightly, smoothing out any little wrinkles or air pockets and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball to a thickness of 1/8 inch. Use a light touch and handle the dough as little as possible

Deck the Halls with Ease This Season It is not the holiday season until homes, stores and town centers are decorated in lights and tinsel. When entire neighborhoods are enhanced by bows and animated figurines, the celebratory tone is set and decorations can trigger happy feelings associated with holiday gatherings.
Some people find holiday decorating enjoyable and eagerly anticipate taking out storage containers and sorting through all of their memory-laden trinkets, while others are less enthusiastic about readying their homes for the season. No matter which group you fall into, the following are some simple tips to make holiday decorating easier: Plan to decorate on a day when you do not have any other responsibilities. Choose to decorate on a day when you can devote your full attention to decorating, avoiding a day when you might be distracted by other things. If you prefer to decorate alone, ask a friend to watch the kids or have a spouse take them out of the house for a few hours. If decorating is a family event, find a day when everyone’s schedules are clear. Take out the decorations the day prior. Hauling boxes and containers from the attic or basement can take a while.

Take some time to move all of the decorating items to a main floor of the house the day or night before your decorating marathon, this way you won’t get discouraged or tired by the task even before the real decorating has begun. Put the tree up first. The Christmas tree is the a focal point of holiday decorations, so set up the tree and decorate it before you get started on decorating the rest of the house. If you do not get to all of your other decorating, at least the tree will be ready and your home will still have some holiday appeal. Once the lights are on, decorating the tree is a great activity for keeping the kids busy while you handle other jobs. Divide and conquer. Nothing makes holiday decorating go faster than delegating decorating tasks. Assign specific tasks to your helpers. Put one person in charge of decorating the living room while another handles the outside lights, wreaths and inflatable items. Turn on the tunes. Working to music frequently takes your mind off of the work and will help pass the time more quickly. Have your favorite holiday playlist at the ready and turn

up the volume. Sing along to the carols or contemporary songs while you are elbow-deep in decorations. Take some breaks. Working hungry or tired may lead to sloppy work or frustration. There’s little chance of untangling a knot in the lights with your patience intact if you haven’t eaten for hours. Plan some time for lunch while you sit and rest. Survey the work you’ve done and make a list of the next steps. After the hard work of decorating, you’ll likely have a sense of accomplishment. Bring Old-Fashioned Christmas Caroling to Your Neighborhood Christmas carols help set the mood for the holiday season. Such songs are played in stores to create festive atmospheres for shoppers, and many families play seasonal music as they decorate their homes for the holidays. Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago during Winter Solstice celebrations. When Christian holidays replaced many of the pagan celebrations, Christian holiday carols replaced the earlier songs. Before Christmas carols were sung by the general public, they were enjoyed during church services, when they sometimes were performed by official carol singers. However, new carols became popular during the Victorian era, when many ordinary people took to the streets to share holiday joy with others through the gift of song. Wassail, a thick, hot and spiced beverage, often kept carolers warm, and soon wassailing and caroling became intertwined.

Although carols and other songs are still popular forms of entertainment at school concerts and some religious group events, the classic tradition of carolers going doorto-door has largely fallen by the wayside. But those who want to bring back this once beloved tradition can take the following steps to do just that: Find a caroling group leader. It helps to have someone who has a sense of musicality and pitch to lead the caroling. Carols are usually sung a capella, so you’ll need a strong singer to guide others and keep them in tune. Recruit a theater or music student or even a member of your church choir. Fill out the rest of the carolers with volunteers who have moderate to strong singing abilities. Of

course, you can accept anyone, as it’s more about sharing the joy rather than having a pitchperfect group. Choose a neighborhood to visit. Select an established neighborhood where there are likely to be many families and even seniors who will be most receptive to carolers. Place flyers in the mailboxes alerting residents of your caroling plans for those who want to be home to enjoy the free show. Promote your plans if you want a larger crowd. If you want to make the caroling a big event, promote your plans in the local newspaper or in a community bulletin, this way everyone in the community can take in the caroling show. Choose a handful of wellknown songs to sing. Your audience will appreciate easily recognizable songs they can sing along with if they choose. Print lyric sheets. Although the lyrics to popular songs are widely known, it helps to have them handy if carolers forget verses. Keep extra copies on hand in case others want to join the caroling group. Get a sponsor. If you live in a rural area and caroling doorto-door is impractical, see if a local retailer will let you carol outside of his or her store or business. Doing so can set the holiday mood and may generate free advertising and increased business for sponsors. Involve youth groups. Kids love the holiday, so including them in your caroling efforts can bring smiles to many faces.
