Planning a Fall Foliage Road Trip openings well in advance if you have your heart set on staying in prime leaf color country.
Come autumn, thousands of motorists take to the highways and backroads to experience the ever-changing landscape made beautiful by leaves changing colors. Fall foliage road trips make for a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon.
Employ a few tricks of the photography trade. Fall foliage may be at its most vibrant at sunrise and sunset when the sun is low in the sky and will not cast much glare. Slightly overcast days also may help leaves’ colors pop, but too much cloud cover may cause a lack of vibrancy in leaf color.
With cameras in hand and provisions at the ready, motorists can make the most of their next fall foliage road trip: Know when to go. Learn the best times of the year to see the peak leaf colors. Mountainous regions and many located in northern latitudes will see changes in leaf color earlier than other regions. Drivers living in certain areas of Canada, regions of the Rocky Mountains or, in particular, parts of New England can expect to witness leaves changing color as early as September, while much of the midwest can expect peak color in mid- to late-October. Southern regions may not see leaves change color until November.

The Origins Of Oktoberfest Although Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn weather with music, food, entertainment and, of course, German beer.

Oktoberfest is a 16-day folk festival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first week of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, while many others attend festivities closer to home. While many people are familiar with the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’s origins. According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on October 12th, 1810, when Bavarian Crown Prince Louis, later to be known as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited, and the festivities were held on the fields in
front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the city gates and elsewhere across Bavaria. The festival and horse races were held once again the following year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event was expanded from one day to a few weeks, stretching through September and into October. The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50 years. But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crowds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a twelve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12 noon by the Mayor of Munich with the cry “O’zapft is!” Millions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhance the fun.

Oktoberfest Fun for All Revelers look forward to Oktoberfest for various reasons. Great food, abundant drinks and festive music entertain the masses come Oktoberfest, so it’s no surprise that this German-inspired tradition is popular the world-over. While Oktoberfest is often thought of as an adults-only celebration, parts of the party can be modified to make the event more inclusive of younger guests. Oktoberfest is the world’s longest fair, running for sixteen days from late September to the first weekend in October. More than six million people from around the world attend the event in Munich, Germany, each year. Smaller Oktoberfest parties are held elsewhere, and the theme can be an interesting one for individuals who want to enjoy a harvest party that does not involve Halloween and costumes. Including children in Oktoberfest celebrations is relatively easy. All you need to do is offer activities that do not involve alcoholic beverages. Try these ideas to get started:
STEIN RELAY Both adults and children can participate in this event, as long as party hosts can keep track of the beverages inside the steins. Adults can use beer, while kids’ cups can be filled with apple cider or root beer. Participants take chances running their filled steins over to a serving tray and then carrying back the full tray without spilling. If any beverages are spilled, the person has to take a drink and then return to have the cup refilled. The team whose members all complete the race first is declared the winner.
POLKA FREEZE DANCE If a polka band is part of the festivities, ask them to participate in a game of freeze dance. Otherwise, hosts can use pre-recorded polka music. Players dance to the music until it stops, and once it does, they have to freeze. Anyone who moves after the music has stopped is “out.” The last person standing is the winner.

Autumn is ripe with vibrant colors and scenery. One of the more vivid sights this time of year are the bright, orange pumpkins that adorn walkways and front porches of homes and businesses. Not only are pumpkins ideal for decorating, but they’re also great to eat. Some people who plan to carve jack-o-lanterns mistakenly believe the same type of pumpkin can be used in their favorite recipes. But what carving pumpkins have in visual flair, they usually lack in flavor and substance. Instead, would-be pumpkin cookers should look to other varieties if they plan to serve pumpkin on the menu. Pumpkins are available from September through December, but they peak in October. Many smaller pumpkins are better and sweeter for cooking. Mini pumpkins, sugar, cheese and pie pumpkins are varieties commonly used in recipes. The big jack-o-lantern pumpkins have stringy, watery flesh and will provide little to no pulp for cooking.

Rinse and save the seeds for planting or roasting. Put the pumpkin pieces in the microwave to cook, or you can steam or bake them until the pulp is soft and the pumpkin falls off of the skin. Cool the pumpkins, then puree the pulp until it’s smooth. You may want to strain the pureed pumpkin with a cheese cloth to remove any excess water before using in a pie recipe. Baked breads may benefit from the extra moisture. Pumpkins are a great source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium, copper, manganese, vitamin E, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. They’re also low in fat and calories. Pumpkin puree can replace the oil in some baking recipes.
Select a pumpkin as you would any other type of squash. Look for a firm pumpkin with no bruises or soft spots. The pumpkin also should have a deep orange color. Store pumpkins in a cool, dark area until ready for use to prolong freshness. Wash the exterior of the pumpkin in cool water before cutting to remove any dirt

Make the Most of “Dinner and a Movie” Night The “perfect date night” differs depending on the couple. Some couples might prefer a night on the town during which they get dolled up and visit a five-star restaurant, while others might find a laid back night at home makes for the ideal night for two. Dinner and a movie has long been a go-to for couples who prefer something short of a fancy night out but more extravagant than a relaxing night at home. While making plans to dine out and catch a movie is not complicated, there are some things couples can do to make sure such nights go off without a hitch: Make a dinner reservation. If you’re going out on a Friday or Saturday night, be sure to make a dinner reservation in advance. Chances are strong other couples have similar plans, and you don’t want to miss the movie because you were stuck waiting for a table at the restaurant. Dinner and a movie nights tend to be impromptu, but make a reservation a few nights in advance if you’re planning on going out on a popular date night.
Leave ample time between dinner and the start of the movie. No one wants to rush through a meal, especially couples who may not get too many chances to dine out and enjoy each other’s conversation. If your movie begins at 9 p.m., make a dinner reservation for 6 or 6:30 p.m. so you have ample time to eat, enjoy each other’s company and make it to the theater on time. If you’re planning on seeing a highly anticipated movie on its opening weekend, be sure to leave enough time between dinner and the start time of the movie so you can get to the theater early enough to get good seats.
Know the addresses of nearby theaters and show times. Many a couple has arrived at a movie theater only to find the movie they planned to see is sold out. Oftentimes, such letdowns can be remedied by driving to another theater nearby that is showing the movie at a slightly later time than the initial theater the couple visited. Know your movie schedules and theater addresses so you have options should your movie
be sold out. Download an app like Fandango on your phone so you don’t waste precious time trying to find show times and addresses on the Internet. Buy your movie tickets in advance. Much like you want to make a dinner reservation so you can get a table, you also want to buy your tickets in advance so you aren’t shut out if the theater sells out. If you’re worried about committing to the movie too far in advance and want to wait to buy tickets, choose a fallback movie to see just in case the film you were hoping to see sells out before you can buy tickets.

Back to school season can be as expensive for parents as it is exciting for students. Once the initial letdown of the end of summer vacation wears off, many kids are excited to return to school, where they can see their friends, study their favorite subjects and participate in extracurricular activities. Parents of school-aged youngsters may share in that excitement while also knowing that back to school season can stretch their budgets. One of the ways to salvage those budgets is to save on school supplies. Fortunately, there are several ways parents can do just that: Be patient. Shopping early can save shoppers money in many instances, but parents may benefit by exercising patience when it comes to buying school supplies for their children. Teachers often give students lists of supplies they will need for each class, and parents who wait to receive such lists can avoid spending money on items their kids won’t need. Even if you wait it out, you may be able to get a head start, as some teachers may post supply lists on school websites, while others might e-mail lists to parents before back to school season hits full swing. Take inventory. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school supplies around the house. Dust off kids’ backpacks and study areas from last school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going forward,
encourage kids to store their supplies in a predetermined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year’s inventory that much easier to examine and assess. Spend more now to save later. Sports may be the first thing that comes to mind when many parents think of extracurricular activities for their children, but not all kids are cut out for or interested in competitive athletics. But just because a youngster may not be the next star quarterback or captain of the soccer team does not mean he or she can’t find an extracurricular activity to be passionate about. Kids who find themselves interested in particular subjects at school, whether it’s graphic design or a beginner’s course on finance, may be eligible for internships with local companies. Such opportunities may even encourage kids to pursue a particular course of study once they enter college. Extracurricular activities can help youngsters develop into wellrounded adults. Parents can help kids find the right activities while keeping schoolwork a priority.

Timely Strategies for Proper Pruning As the leaves fall off the trees and greenery thins out for the season, exposing branches and undergrowth along the way, homeowners may be tempted to prune their trees and shrubs. But while autumn pruning may seem like a good idea, many gardening experts say it is often best for homeowners to wait until winter or early spring before pruning.

Pruning in the autumn, when plants are naturally preparing to go dormant, can weaken the plants considerably. This can compromise their chances of surviving into the next growing season.
Keep tools clean and in good working order. You risk injury if your tools are dull and in poor shape overall. Spend time sharpening pruners and keep manual tools oiled and clean. Debris can lodge itself in clippers, making it more difficult to open and shut them. Wash and dry tools after use, especially when dealing with diseased plants. Otherwise, you risk spreading disease to healthy plants.
Fall temperatures also can be deceiving. While it may be warm during the day when the sun is shining, temperatures can quickly drop overnight. Pruning during the warmth of day, when the sap has risen in the plants, may deplete energy from the plant. When the mercury drops at night, the plant can suffer.
Cut back stems completely. It’s usually a good idea to prune branches back to the main stem. Leaving a portion sticking out can catch on people or animals and produce a gathering spot for bacteria and insects. Take out thinner, smaller shoots first before moving on to any dead or dying branches.
If you must spend time in the yard in the fall, tend to the leaves and debris that have already fallen to the ground rather than focusing energy on fall pruning. If you have been diligent during the spring and summer, your shrubs and other plants likely won’t need pruning at this time of year.
Prune dry branches. Do not prune when plants are wet. Pruning damp plants encourages the growth of microbes that can infiltrate the plant. This is not as significant a problem in the winter, when microbes have already been killed.
Wait until winter before taking out the shears. At this point, the woody parts of many plants are dormant and will not be

Did You Know? Known as the “Day of Atonement,” Yom Kippur is a day when people who subscribe to the Jewish faith atone for sins between themselves and God of the past year. Yom Kippur is a complete Sabbath, which means no work can be performed during the holiday. Fasting is a part of Yom Kippur, and Jews are expected to observe a 25-hour fast that begins before sunset on the evening before the holiday and ends after nightfall on Yom Kippur. The Talmud, which is the collection of Jewish laws and traditions, also lists several lesser-known restrictions regarding Yom Kippur. Washing and bathing, the use of cosmetics or deodorants, wearing leather shoes and sexual relations also are restricted on Yom Kippur. Restrictions may be lifted on Yom Kippur when certain special circumstances arise, and children under the age of nine as well as women who are with child are not permitted to fast on Yom Kippur. Jews spend much of Yom Kippur in the synagogue, where they pray and take part in services that may begin in early morning. Morning services may continue until midafternoon, when practitioners can briefly go home before returning in the early evening to partake in ceremonies commemorating the end of Yom Kippur. Enlist a buddy. Work goes much more quickly if you have someone to help you. Make a list of all the jobs that need to be done and then split them among your cleaning helpers. Kids can get involved by taking care of the simpler tasks, such as dusting or wiping down counters. Clean from top to bottom. Dust and dirt will settle at the lowest possible points, so do not create extra work for yourself by cleaning floors and other surfaces and then dusting off shelves or cleaning cobwebs from the ceiling. Consider keeping a spray bottle of a bleach-and-water solution or mildew cleaner near the shower so you can simply spray down the walls right after showering. Multitask as much as possible. Multitasking works at the office, and such an approach also can pay dividends when cleaning your home. For example, unload the dishwasher while your lunch is heating up in the microwave. This saves you some time and makes use of the time you would otherwise be standing around. Do laundry daily. Laundry can quickly sneak up on you, especially in a busy household. Instead of devoting an entire day to doing laundry, try to do one full load per day. This will make the pile of dirty clothes much more manageable and ensure that you and your family members always have some clean clothes available. A warm breeze, the sound of a bubbling brook and the fresh smell of pine in the air are just some of the draws of hiking. There’s nothing quite like getting outdoors and enjoying nature. Although hiking isn’t inherently dangerous, being at the mercy of the elements does imply some risk. As a result, it pays to be prepared when embarking on a hiking trip. Even novice hikers know to avoid bug bites and apply sunscreen before heading outdoors, but there are also some lesser-known potential hazards on the hiking trail. Heeding these tips can keep a person safe. Plan ahead. Understand the terrain and the trails before you begin the hike. Visit the park or area’s official website to access detailed, printable trail maps and other information about the area. Make note of ranger stations, portable bathrooms and any other places you may want to use as pit stops along the way. Give a copy of the trail map to someone staying behind, marking your planned place of entry. In the event you get lost, the person at home can alert

Know your environment. Hiking trails can be found all around the world. Some may be arid and barren areas, while other areas may be lush and tropical. Each of these regions brings with them their own share of plants and animals. It is wise to know which species you may encounter along the way so you will know how to treat a bite or a brush with a poisonous plant in the event of an emergency.
Bring water. Water is essential when going on a hiking trip. By the time you are feeling thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Bring at least 1 to 2 liters of water per person. Keep in mind that this may mean adding 3 to 4 pounds to the pack. When necessary, trade excess weight in other supplies for water, since water is most essential. Drinking from springs or lakes is not adviseable. Animals bathe and relieve themselves in that water, and it might be teeming with bacteria.
Be mindful of the weather. Before going on the hike, get the latest weather report from a few different sources. This way you will have an average picture in your head of what the weather will be, and you can choose your footwear, clothing and other essentials based on that forecast. Few things can spoil a trip faster than unpredictable weather and failure to be ready for it.
Pack snacks. Bring along lightweight snacks, such as granola bars, dried fruit and nuts. Avoid sugary or starchy snacks that your body will burn up in no time, leaving you feeling hungry again. Keep food in tightly fitted containers so aromas won’t lure curious animals in close. Embark early. The temperature is lower in the morning, and the sun is less intense in early morning as well. Capture the moments with photos and be sure to make prints later. Carry out only what you carried in. Litter can ruin a natural landscape and put animals in danger. Many times, uneven wear can be remedied by a simple tire rotation, so take your vehicle to your mechanic if you notice this. Look for stowaways. In the course of your travels, your tire might have picked up a few stowaways, such as nails and screws that are poking into the tire. If you find any freeloaders, take your car to

Perform the penny test. The penny test can help motorists determine if tire treads are worn. To perform the test, insert a penny with Abraham Lincoln’s head pointing upward into the tread. If the tread does not reach the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire’s treads are worn.
