Car Battery Care In Extreme Weather be mounted on the battery. It will deliver enough power to the battery while the car is off to keep it from freezing.
Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life. Frigid weather can cause trouble with a car’s battery. Some drivers do not understand why, but getting the facts can help people avoid having to deal with dead batteries on cold winter days. Cold temperatures wreak havoc on batteries because they slow the chemical reaction inside of the battery. Batteries work by combining lead plates with lead dioxide and sulfuric acid to create electrons. While batteries can function under myriad conditions, the cold weather tends to degrade high-quality batteries and may render subpar batteries useless. The cold weather can cause the fluid in the battery to freeze and lose function. A battery that is frozen will not hold a charge, and, as a result, the car won’t start. There are various ways to protect a battery from failure in the cold, and some of them involve taking precautionary measures: Assess the age of your battery.
If your battery is old, now may be the time to replace it. Batteries differ in how long they last, but many last anywhere from five to 10 years. If your car is still running on its original battery and your car is several years old, it may be a good idea to get a new battery before the arrival of winter. Battery size will not necessarily provide better starting. It’s important to buy the correct battery for the make of your car, which can usually be found inside of the owner’s manual. Verify that there is no corrosion. Corrosion can prevent a car from starting just as much as a worn-
Minimize the use of automotive accessories. Do not start the car with the heater and the radio on. They can use up the power coming from the car’s alternator and prevent the battery from charging. Do not leave the heat and the radio on while the car is idling. Otherwise, the car will not be putting out enough power for the alternator to charge the battery and power the electrical systems.
out battery. Corrosion is caused by a faulty connection that allows battery acid to escape and corrode surrounding areas. Regularly inspect the battery to keep abreast of issues that may cause corrosion. Carefully clean away any corrosive residue that has formed and make sure the battery is correctly seated.
Disconnect the battery. If your car will be stored in a garage for the winter, disconnect the battery. Certain devices, such as clocks and alarm systems, continue to drain battery power when the vehicle is off. If your car will not be driven enough to recharge the battery, keep it disconnected when the automobile is being stored.
Install a battery blanket. A battery blanket is used to wrap around the battery and fit inside of the battery cover. A cord with a plug runs from the blanket to a wall outlet. The blanket can produce enough heat to keep the battery fluid from freezing. A trickle charger can also
Cold weather can sometimes wreak havoc on vehicles. Knowing how to skirt trouble with your car’s battery can keep your car on the road throughout the winter.

Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Come True men and women experience setbacks directly related to their resolutions. If you resolved to save more money but had a month when that simply was not possible, don’t allow that to derail your resolution for the rest of the year. Setbacks are nearly inevitable, but they’re never an excuse to give up on a resolution.
New Year’s resolutions provide a perfect opportunity to set positive goals for the year to come. Old habits can be hard to break, which can make it difficult for men and women to stay committed to their New Year’s resolutions. But a new year marks a new chapter, and the following are some ways you can ensure this year’s resolutions don’t go unresolved: Be specific. A resolution that’s too general may ultimately prove ineffective. For example, if you resolve to lose weight this year, you probably hope to lose a substantial amount of weight over the next 12 months, as opposed to just one or two pounds. If you set specific and periodic goals, such as to lose one to two pounds by the end of January, as part of your resolution, then you are building in some measuring sticks along the way, and meeting those measuring sticks can motivate you to stay on course and realize your resolution by year’s end. Don’t go overboard. If you traditionally find resolutions hard to live up to, then stick to a single resolution this year. This allows you to focus your efforts more effectively and ensures you won’t be overburdened, which could negatively impact your ability to realize your resolutions. Use technology. Saving more money is a popular New Year’s resolution, and now men and women looking to save more can employ technology to help them realize their financial
Did You Know? goals. If your goal for the coming year is to save ‘X’ amount of dollars, sit down and calculate how much you need to save each pay period to realize that goal. You can then have that figure automatically deposited into an interest-bearing savings account each time your paycheck is deposited into your account. Enlist a friend. If your New Year’s resolution is one that others can apply to their own lives, then by all means enlist a friend. For example, men and women who want to find more time to exercise in the coming year can enlist a friend or family member to exercise with them. The buddy system is a great motivating tool, and enlisting the help of a friend or family member provides the added benefit of seeing that loved one more often in the year ahead. Don’t let setbacks derail your resolution. Resolutions too often fall by the wayside when
According to a 2014 study from researchers at the University of Scranton, just 45 percent of Americans admit to routinely making New Year’s resolutions. The study also showed that an additional 38 percent of Americans acknowledged they never make New Year’s resolutions. Among the former group, self improvement or education-related resolutions were most popular, followed by weight resolutions. The study also found that resolutions tend to be less successful as a person ages. While 39 percent of survey participants in their twenties reported achieving their resolutions each year, those in their fifties reported a success rate of just 14 percent. Time also seems to be against resolutions, as just 46 percent of respondents reported maintaining their resolutions for more than six months.

Be Smart About Wedding Beauty Preparation care of hair removal a day or two prior to the wedding.
All eyes are on the bride and groom on their wedding day. Feeling beautiful and dapper can boost a couple’s confidence and ensure they look back on their wedding photographs and videos with pride. Certain beauty basics and makeup and hair strategies can help any bride look spectacular on her wedding day. The following are some dos and don’ts of wedding day beauty preparations:
DO exfoliate your skin prior to the wedding. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should endure a harsh fruit acid peel or another procedure. You can exfoliate with a gentle washing of your skin with a nubby washcloth to remove any dryness and errant flakes. Moisturize well to ensure a smooth palette for makeup application.
DO employ the services of a professional hairstylist and makeup artist. Professionals have the experience and tools of the trade to help you to look your best. From contouring to make your face seem slimmer, to enlarging the appearance of small eyes, some tricks of the trade are best left to the pros.
DON’T wash or condition hair the day of the wedding. Intricate styles tend to stay better when hair has a little grip. “Dirty” hair is easier to work with than shiny, freshly washed locks. If you must wash, remember to thoroughly dry your hair before going to your appointment. DO wear a little extra makeup than you are accustomed to wearing because it will show up better in photos. However, do not wear so much that you look clownish. A makeup artist can help you achieve the right balance.
DON’T forget to schedule a trial run. Make this appointment several months before the wedding day so you have ample time to work with your stylists and experiment with colors and hair arrangements to fit your personality and the style of your gown. Take plenty of pictures and notes so you will remember what needs to be on hand for the wedding day.
DON’T have bridesmaids wear makeup that is bolder than yours, especially red lips. No one should upstage the bride.

out two or more slots instead of one, this way the stylist does not overbook and will not feel rushed. Many brides opt to have stylists come to their homes. There may be an extra charge for this service, but it may be well worth the cost.
DON’T wear too much under-eye concealer or one that is too light of a shade. This can draw more attention to problem areas than remedy them.

Renowned Ski Resorts Ski resorts that can boast high snow reliability tend to attract the most seasoned skiers. In addition to other essential ski resort information, SkiResort.info includes resort classification based on snow reliability. The following are the top-ranked resorts based on snow reliability: Mammoth Mountain: The skiing season at this California resort begins in late October and can last as late as early June. The resort typically boasts more than 200 days of skiing per year. Although natural snow is abundant, snow cannons are available to add to the snow level.
Grouse Mountain: Close proximity to the Pacific Ocean gives this Vancouver resort great snow reliability. Huge amounts of snow fall each winter. Whistler Blackcomb: Located in the heart of British Columbia, this ski haven offers a glacier area and plenty of natural snow. Lifts stay in operation through August to take visitors to the glacier run. Winter Park: The altitude of this Colorado resort makes it very snow reliable. In addition to natural snow, 27 runs also have snow-making capabilities.
Telluride: The valley run of Colorado’s famed Telluride is almost always open. Again, high altitude contributes to abundant snow. Telluride and the runs surrounding the Mountain Village have snowmaking capabilities. Stowe, Vermont: Conveniently close to Long Island, this picturesque northeast ski town combines old world charm with modern-day amenities. There are also gorgeous ski lodges available that will cater to your every need. Visit www. stowe.com to plan your visit this winter.

Determine If A Destination Wedding Is Right For You When the time comes to walk down the aisle, more and more couples are choosing to make the procession in a far-off land. Destination weddings are on the rise, with researchers at TheKnot. com reporting that roughly one in four couples who tied the knot in 2011 chose to have a destination wedding. Destination weddings may appear to be an ideal way to tie the knot, but couples should know that planning such a ceremony may be even more difficult than planning a more traditional affair. Couples who choose to have a destination wedding must be ready to put a significant amount of faith in a wedding planner, who is often affiliated with the resort where the couple will be staying. Though the wedding planner may handle many of the details concerning the ceremony and the reception, couples should know that some of that planning will still fall on their shoulders as well. That planning may not be so simple, so before couples spread the word about their island wedding, it’s best to consider a few factors to determine if a destination wedding is truly the best way to go: Guests: How many guests a couple hopes to invite is a great starting point when determining if a destination wedding is for you. Many couples who choose to have a destination wedding do so because they prefer a more intimate ceremony. Destination weddings are obviously more expensive for guests than a more traditional ceremony, so many guests won’t be able to afford to attend. Couples who intend to invite many guests might want to avoid a destination wedding. Locale: The destination for your destination wedding should be a locale that holds a special place in your heart. A random location that you find on the Internet might work out, but having some prior experience with the destination can help you anticipate minor, yet potentially problematic, issues. These issues can include the accessibility of the airport, currency exchange rate and the weather. In addition, you can help guests have a better time on their trips For more information, call: 631.226.2636

if you have already familiarized yourself with the locale. If you haven’t traveled much as a couple and don’t have a particular place in mind, then you might find a destination wedding is more hassle than it’s worth. Accessibility: A common problem many couples encounter when planning a destination wedding is the accessibility of their chosen locale. Couples will likely have to visit the destination at least once prior to their wedding, which will eat up some of your wedding budget and your vacation time (which you will need to save for the actual wedding and your honeymoon). If the locale is a remote island that’s not very accessible, that can make these pre-wedding trips pretty stressful. Accessibility should also be a consideration for your guests. How far will your guests have to travel? How much money will guests have to spend on airfare and hotel accommodations? The less accessible the locale is, the more you and your guests are going to have to spend.

Accessibility of the airport is another consideration. Some island locales and resorts are known for their remoteness, which can be a problem for wedding guests. If the resort is a long ride away from the airport, that’s another expense for guests. The resort may provide a shuttle service, but that cost will fall on the couple and the shuttle may not run frequently, which can prove problematic when guests’ arrivals are staggered. Legality: The law is another thing couples must consider when deciding if a destination wedding is for them. Laws vary depending on the locale, so before you commit to a specific locale, make sure you’re legally allowed to get married there and if there are any hurdles you must clear before you can. Those hurdles might be significant, and couples may find they’re not worth the hassle. Destination weddings are on the rise, but couples must consider a host of factors to ensure a destination wedding is truly for them. WESTERN SUFFOLK

Romantic Films To Watch This Valentine’s Day Couples celebrate Valentine’s Day in many different ways. For some, the idea of dinner out followed by a stroll arm-in-arm seems the epitome of romance, while others may want to go out dancing or engage in a favorite hobby. Valentine’s Day also can be a romantic endeavor if a couple chooses to spend time at one with each other watching a romantic movie. The following are a handful of love-inspired movies that can add a special something to Valentine’s Day festivities: The Proposal: In order to remain in the country, a demanding New York-based book editor (Sandra Bullock) asks her browbeaten assistant (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her. Their tumultuous relationship involves a trip to Alaska to meet his family. An Affair To Remember: Romantic melodramatic master Cary Grant falls in love with Deborah Kerr aboard a cruise ship while they are traveling with other people. They agree to meet at the
top of the Empire State Building in six months if they have ended their relationships and are ready to commit to each other. Grant makes it to the rendezvous spot, but an injured Kerr never shows as Grant assumes she has rejected the proposal.
take the film from the big screen to the Broadway stage.
Say Anything: In pursuit of a woman he believes is out of his social league, Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) creates hope for the underdog in us all. The movie inspired teens to raise their boom box radios over their heads and blast romantic tunes to illustrate their love. The Wedding Singer: This quirky movie about a wedding singer who falls for a banquet waitress highlights the importance of loving each other for what makes you unique.
My Best Friend’s Wedding: Julianne (Julia Roberts) is called on to be the “best man” for her friend’s (Dermot Mulroney) wedding. Only when the wedding planning is underway does Julianne realize she is in love with her friend and needs to get him to fall for her instead.
Once: Attraction between the main characters comes by way of creative musical collaboration. Music proves to be an aphrodisiac, making the film and the song Falling Slowly from its score so popular. This romantic tale helped
West Side Story: West Side Story is yet another homage to Romeo and Juliet. But the film made Shakespeare’s tragic love story relatable to audiences of the 1960s.
Annie Hall: Winner of four Academy Awards, Annie Hall follows a comedian who is trying to maintain his relationship with a woman. Bridget Jones’ Diary: A modern adaptation of Pride And Prejudice, the movie tells the tale of a selfconscious woman who finds love in a man that seems to be her polar opposite. Ten Things I Hate About You: Filmmakers reinvented The Taming Of The Shrew in this teen comedy starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger.
Never Been Kissed: A reporter goes undercover at a high school to discover something controversial and ends up being the subject of her story when she falls in love with her English teacher.
Casablanca: No romantic movie list would be complete without this wartime drama. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are in top form in this movie of chance meetings.
Harold And Maude: A man in his twenties and a much older woman begin a romantic relationship and challenge social norms along the way.
The Princess Bride: Girl meets boy, girl detests boy, girl truly loves boy, and then girl loses boy. This fairy tale shares the purity of true love and happily ever after.

Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding are wildly popular across the globe. Athletes from both sports compete every four years at the Winter Olympics, while millions of their fellow athletes take to the slopes each winter for recreational purposes. While skiing and snowboarding may dominate the outdoor winter sports landscape, there are plenty of off-the-radar outdoor sports that are growing in popularity among people looking for something a little different.

Snowkiting Much like snowboarding appeals to surfers and skateboarders, snowkiting has found a fan base among people who enjoy kiteboarding when the weather is warm. Snowkiters use kite power to glide across the snow or ice. Foil kites once dominated the snowkiting landscape, but many snowkiters now prefer inflatable kites. Snowkiting can be very dangerous, so it’s important that men and women interested in snowkiting learn the proper techniques, which can be difficult to master.

Though its name might leave much to be desired, fat biking is growing in popularity among athletes who love riding bikes but have traditionally had to put their bikes in the garage once the temperatures dip. Fat bikes are similar to traditional bicycles, but they come with oversized tires and wider rims that make it possible for the bikes to handle unstable terrain, including terrain covered in snow. Mountain biking enthusiasts may favor fat biking, as the sport allows them to traverse snowcovered trails their mountain bikes

are typically unable to traverse.
Ice Boating
For those who simply love to be out on the water, ice boating is a great way to fulfill your winter fix for sailing. Ice boats are similar to sailboats, but they are typically fitted with runners, also called skates, or skis and designed to run over frozen waters instead of through water. Ice boats tend to sail across ice-covered surfaces at high speeds, and that can make already cold conditions even colder for ice boat sailors. But many ice boat sailors find the sport is even more fun than traditional sailing.
Skijoring
Skijoring may be a less accessible winter sport, as it involves people on skis being pulled by a dog, horse or vehicle. The sport originated centuries ago in Scandinavia as a way for military members to speed up the process of sharing messages. Skijoring with dogs typically involves men or women being pulled by one to three dogs, each of which is wearing a sled dog harness (men and women wear skijoring harnesses). Dogs are not controlled by reins, but rather must be motivated to keep moving by their own desire to run. A single horse is typically enough for equestrian skijoring, and horses are typically guided by a rider. Small motorized vehicles, such as snowmobiles, are typically used in motorized skijoring. Athletes need not sequester themselves indoors when temperatures dip below freezing. In fact, there are several lesser known outdoor sports athletes can enjoy this winter. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

Stay Safe When Sledding One of the more popular wintertime activities, sledding attracts scores of participants every time a new coating of snow covers sloping hills. Although sledding can be fun, it also can be risky.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says there are thousands of sledding-, snow tubingand toboggan-related injuries each year. The majority of injuries occur to children age 14 and younger. Young children are vulnerable to injury because they have higher centers of gravity that can cause them to lose balance more readily. Youngsters’ coordination is not fully developed as well, which makes it difficult for them to steer and avoid obstacles. When sledding, winter revelers big and small need to put safety first before racing down those slopes. Avoid collisions. Check the sledding space carefully for any obstacles, including waiting children at the end of the run. The Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital says a vast number of sledding injuries are caused by collisions. These occur when a sledder bangs into something, like a fence, tree or another person. Bone fractures are twice as likely to occur from a collision than from falling off a sled. Making sure the coast is clear helps sledders avoid collisions.
H E AT I N G
Dress children appropriately. Treat sledding as you would any activity that involves a moving device. That means making children wear helmets to prevent head injuries. Head and neck injuries are common among children six years old and younger. Helmets considerably reduce injuries when worn correctly. Choose the right sled. Sleds that can be steered with handles are generally safer than snow disks or flat sheets heading down a hill. Handles can prevent falls off of the sled, as they give a child something to hold onto. Sled feet-first. Children should be instructed to always go down a hill feet-first. This way, should they encounter any obstacles, their boots will hit it first and not their delicate heads and necks. Follow the sled safety guidelines. Read the instructions and safety guidelines for your sled. Heed the recommendation for the number of passengers on a sled at one time. Check the end of the slope. Do not sled on driveways, hills or slopes
that end in a street, dropoff or pond. Only allow sledding under adult supervision. Children should have an adult with them at all times when sledding. Two adults is preferable because one can stay with a child should he or she become injured while the other goes for help. Use common sense. Never sled in the street or on a highway. Do not ride a sled being pulled by a motorized vehicle. Sled only during daylight hours. Unless sledding will occur in welllit areas at night, it should be done during the day when visibility is best. Dress in layers. Sledding can be a demanding physical activity. Dress in layers that can be removed if you get too warm. Sweating while sledding increases your risk of hypothermia. Adjust clothing layers accordingly for comfort. Sledding is an enjoyable winter activity that can provide hours of fun and exercise. Sled safely so injuries do not ruin an otherwise festive afternoon.

Tips To Stop Colds Before They Start The stuffy nose, aches and pains that often accompany the common cold can leave sufferers feeling miserable for a week or more. Cold season seems to kick into high gear when the temperatures drop, but this can be the year you don’t come down with a case of the sniffles. The following cold prevention tips can increase your chances of making it to spring without losing any days or sleep to the common cold:
long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change into fresh outfits. Such precautionary measures can keep colds and other illnesses from running rampant through your house. Go outdoors and get some fresh air. It’s a myth that cold air will bring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of congregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Don’t be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you. Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and making it more capable of fending off colds.
Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a
Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus can be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus travels on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get propelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as
far away as possible and wash your hands frequently, paying special attention to your fingertips. Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business. Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your nose to hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passageways and make them more vulnerable to infection. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you are well, keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Viruses are especially good at entering the body through the mucus membranes located in these areas of the body. A combination of frequent handwashing and avoiding touching your face can keep colds at bay.
Maintain your exercise routine. Regular exercise can boost the body’s immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supplements, speak with your doctor to make sure they won’t interact negatively with other medications. Recognize that antibiotics are not the answer. Antibiotics are only effective at treating bacterial infections, not viruses, which means they are ineffective at fighting the cold virus. If you do get sick, play it smart. Should you succumb to a cold in spite of your best efforts, steer clear of others so you are not spreading the virus. Rest and fuel your body with healthy foods and beverages. There’s no need to visit a doctor for a cold unless you have a fever after several days of being sick. Colds normally last between seven and 10 days. If your symptoms do not improve or if they seem to be worsening, visit your doctor.

Early morning workouts have their ups and downs. Glucose levels in the body tend to be low in the morning, when many people wake up with a relatively empty stomach. Low blood glucose levels can cause feelings of nausea and weakness and possibly make you feel faint. In addition, since you likely aren’t moving much while you’re asleep, your joints and muscles are likely less mobile early in the morning than they are in the evening, which can make morning workouts difficult and, if you don’t allow yourself more time to warm up, put your body at greater risk of injury. But morning workouts also can energize you throughout the day, and many people find it easier to consistently exercise in the early mornings than at night, when distractions or long days at the office can affect your motivation to work out.
your body is perhaps at its least mobile right when you get out of bed, so set aside more time to warm up when you work out in the mornings. Five to 10 minutes of light cardiovascular exercise before you begin your workout can be enough to increase your body temperature and loosen your body up so it’s ready for exercise. Don’t go it alone. The buddy system is effective for many people regardless of when they exercise, but it can be especially beneficial for men and women who want to start working out in the morning. If someone is waiting for you at the gym or if your significant other is up and ready to go, you’re far less likely to skip a morning workout than you would be if you are going it alone. Eat at your own discretion. Some people simply cannot eat before a workout, while others find working out on an empty stomach makes them faint and weak. The problem many people who work out in the early morning encounter with regard to eating before their workouts is they simply don’t have the time to eat and afford their body enough time to turn that meal or snack into fuel that will benefit their workout.
Make sleep a priority. Prioritizing sleep makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning, when you will face the daily temptation to hit the snooze button and roll over. But if you aren’t sleep deprived, you will find it easier to skip the snooze phase of your morning routine and get right out of bed. Skip the late night talk shows and call it a night earlier, making sure you get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. Once you establish a new sleep schedule, you will find it easier and easier to get up and hit the gym in the morning.
A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that eating a meal 45 minutes before a moderate-intensity workout enhances exercise capability. But morning exercise enthusiasts typically find they do not have that spare 45 minutes to wait around while their bodies absorb a meal. Eating healthy before exercise, and giving your body adequate time to absorb that meal, can definitely fuel your workout. But if that 45 minutes ultimately compromises your ability to work out, you may want to have a glass of orange juice or a drink that contains carbohydrates so your body has some fuel as you exercise.
Designate more time to warm up. Early morning workout routines require athletes to warm up more than they would when exercising at other times of the day. As previously noted,
Many adults find that mornings are the only times they can consistently exercise. Adjusting to such a routine can be difficult, but there are some ways to make that adjustment easier.

How To Prepare For Cold Weather Power Outages Cold weather can bring wind, snow and ice. But cold weather also might be the culprit behind power outages.
year, but especially so when the temperatures dip. Here’s how to prepare for an extended power outage:
Sudden power outages can be inconvenient and troublesome. The potential danger of a power outage only escalates when one happens during the winter. It is relatively easy to recover from a short-term loss of power, but extensive power outages can compromise human health and safety.
Keep your home well-stocked with safety devices. Purchase flashlights and batteries and keep them in an easily accessible location. Solarpowered rechargeable batteries last longer than more traditional batteries, and if you pair them with LED flashlights, you can extend the usage time and have more light when needed. Store bottled water and nonperishable foods in a pantry or in the garage. Fill gas cans with gasoline and store in a safe location. Many portable generators require gasoline to run, and gas pumps may not work during a blackout.
Relatively recent storms such as Hurricane Sandy illustrated just how challenging it can be for people to go without power, particularly today, when many people have grown accustomed to having everything available at the flick of a switch. Heavy, wet snow can weigh down power lines or cause branches to break and damage electric cables. Poor road conditions can make it challenging for power company crews to arrive in affected areas and make repairs, which can lead to prolonged power outages. Men and women must prepare for blackouts at any time of the
Have an alternative heat source at the ready. When the power goes out, so do furnaces, which usually require an electrically powered blower or pump to work. If you have a backup generator, you may be able to plug in a space heater to warm one room in the house. Otherwise, a fireplace can provide some heat. If you do not have power and no other heating source,
make arrangements to leave your home and stay with relatives or friends. Assess your water needs. Homes that receive water from a municipal water source should be alright in terms of supply during a power outage. Those who have well water and rely on septic systems will probably find themselves without water during an outage. These systems require electricity to pump water into the home. Store barrels of fresh water to use for washing, cooking and flushing toilets. FEMA recommends storing a three-day supply of water, or roughly three gallons, per individual. Keep important papers handy. Make a folder with copies of phone numbers, policy account numbers, banking information and similarly valuable information. Remember, during a power outage you may not have computer access, and your mobile phone will only last as long as your next charge. Keep physical documents handy in case you need to leave home or contact service providers. Create
extra
insulation.
Have an evacuation plan in place. Know where you will go if you cannot stay in your home. Find out if a friend or family member has room for you. Hotels and motels are another option, but they may be booked during an outage.

Add Value To Your Home With These Renovations a deluxe renovation may not be necessary, as relatively moderate improvements can create a whole new look for a kitchen.
Homeowners choose renovation projects for a variety of reasons. Although many improvements are made to increase functionality and comfort of a home, several others are seen as worthwhile investments. These investments can add up to a higher resale value when the time comes to sell a home. Certain projects have a history of providing a greater return on homeowners’ investments than others. The following renovation tips can add beauty to your home and generate great returns when you put the home up for sale:
cket to free travel. ket to Invest in your kitchen. Kitchen remodels are a safe bet when it comes to putting money into improving a home. Residents tend to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, but a dated, poorly functioning kitchen can detract from the value of a home, even if the rest of the home is in good shape. It’s possible to recoup between 60 and 120 percent of your kitchen remodel investment, especially if the kitchen matches up well with the rest of your home. Homeowners should know that
Put in another bathroom. Multiple bathrooms are an attractive selling point, ® particularly in older homes that may not have been equipped with more than one bathroom. Finding extra space for a bathroom can be tricky, but consider closets,

areas under stairs or even taking some space away from another room. Popular home-improvement television channel HGTV advises that half-bathrooms require at least 18 square feet of space, while full baths need 30 to 35 square feet for a stand-up shower or bathtub. Renovate the HVAC system. Aesthetic improvements aren’t the only ones that add value to a home. Many home buyers are eager to purchase a home that has a new heating and cooling system, as buyers understand that furnaces and air conditioning units are substantial investments that can last for years. Other improvements, such as adding attic insulation or replacing older windows and doors with more energy efficient options, also are smart bets.
Put a deck addition outdoors. Outdoor living spaces have become more desireable, especially as the “staycation” has grown in popularity. Decks and patios can make backyards more appealing. The scope of your investment will depend on the size of the deck and design. Doing the work yourself can cut the cost of decks in half, but only if you have the specific tools or experience to tackle such a project. Improve curb appeal. Adding attractive landscaping and freshening up the entryway to a home can add considerable value to your home, as buyers judge homes by their exteriors. Completely renovated interiors may never be seen if buyers pass up your home because of a less attractive exterior. Classy, subtle changes, like well-placed shrubbery and a green lawn, can work wonders. An inviting front door and well-lit entryway also add curb appeal to a home. Before making improvements, homeowners should determine if a given project will provide a solid return on their investment.

Winter Superfoods For Optimal Health Illnesses seem to peak during the winter months. A tappedout immune system as well as dry, cold air may encourage the spread of common viruses and bacterial infections more easily. As a result, it’s important that men, women and children take every step possible to ward off sickness when the temperatures drop. Dietary changes can make a world of difference, and more and more people are including these proven superfoods in their winter diets. Avocado: Avocado has high levels of essential fatty acids and vitamin B6, which is important in the biosynthesis of important neurotransmitters. Foods high in B vitamins may be able to counteract some of the symptoms of winterrelated depression. Did You Know? Americans celebrate Groundhog Day every February 2nd. Revelers anxiously await the appearance of the groundhog to find out if they will be treated to an early spring or six more weeks of winter, depending on whether or not Phil sees his shadow.

Day. In the film, Murray plays a weatherman who is asked to cover the Groundhog Day festivities, but finds himself stuck in a time vortex that causes the day to repeat itself over and over ad nauseum. Fans of the film may be in for a treat, as rumors suggest that the movie will soon be gracing the stage. There’s no word yet who will star in the stage version, but Danny Rubin will write the script and Tim Minchin, the composer behind Matilda, will be working on the score. It’s uncertain if investors will carry Groundhog Day to the Great White Way anytime soon, but there are hopes it will end up premiering in London or on Broadway in the future. WESTERN SUFFOLK

Make The Most Of Your Night Out This Valentine’s Day Chocolates and flowers may be staples of Valentine’s Day, but many couples take it one step further and dine out on February 14th. According to the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association’s Valentine’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, 34.6 percent of respondents indicated that dining out would be part of their Valentine’s Day agenda. A romantic dinner is an ideal capper for a day geared around love and affection. But Valentine’s Day is a busy night for many restaurants, so it pays to heed the following advice to ensure this special night is memorable for all the right reasons: Make reservations well in advance. Dining out is especially popular on Valentine’s Day, so call several weeks in advance to secure your spot. Also, do not underestimate the draw of all types of restaurants on Valentine’s Day. People who were not able to get a table at their first choices may trickle into chain restaurants or smaller establishments in search of an easy meal. If you think your lesser-known haunt will not be packed, think again. Always play it safe by making a reservation early.

Expect some crowding. Restaurants tend to add extra tables on Valentine’s Day, when they expect an influx of customers. Dining rooms may be more packed than usual, and you may not have a choice of where you will be seated. Even a reservation does not guarantee you won’t have to wait for a table. Be patient upon arriving at the restaurant, and consider wait time when factoring in childcare. Be flexible with the menu. Pricefixed menus are commonplace on nights when there will be a large turnover of customers in a short amount of time. These menus WESTERN SUFFOLK
allow restaurants to stock up on the necessary ingredients and cook en masse. Diners may find that price-fixed menus offer a limited selection, and their favorite dishes may not be available. But knowing this in advance can reduce feelings of disappointment. Rest assured there should be several options that appeal to different palates. Be patient with servers. Valentine’s Day is a busy night for staff at the restaurant, particularly servers who must be the liaison between the kitchen staff and diners. The sheer volume of customers can test the skills of even the most veteran servers. Many Valentine’s Day diners do not eat out regularly and will need extra guidance. Servers may be called on to snap photos of couples with cell phones or linger at certain tables. Use idle time at your table to engage in romantic conversation and plan the rest of the evening. Consider your budget. Diners can expect to pay a premium for dining out on Valentine’s Day. Select a lower-priced restaurant if your budget is on the smaller side. Be on time. Being respectful of your reservation will not only benefit you, but also it is a courtesy to fellow diners who will be sitting at your table later in the evening. While you may want to linger over dessert, try not to linger too long. Promptly store leftovers. If you take a doggie bag home from dinner, stash it in the refrigerator as soon as possible to prevent foodborne illnesses. If you will be going out dancing or to a movie after dinner, it may be best to skip the doggie bag altogether. Valentine’s Day is a busy night for dining out. Patience, courtesy and flexibility are traits that can keep your evening moving along smoothly. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

While the batter is chilling, put the chocolate in a small bowl. In a small saucepan, bring the heavy cream to a boil over medium-high heat, about 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and pour the hot cream over the chopped chocolate, stirring until blended and smooth. Keep warm. Fill a medium-size pot with at least 3 inches oil and heat until the oil measures about 360 F on a candy or instant-read thermometer. Carefully drop the crochette batter by the heaping tablespoon into the hot oil and cook, turning once, until brown on all sides, about 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve immediately with chocolate sauce. If desired, serve with warm caramel and berry sauces as well.
