Each year brings with it gains and losses, milestones and mini-markers of life. With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,
this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) recently received a $10,000 contribution from AT&T in support of its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education Initiative. This is the fourth year AT&T has contributed to GSNC’s STEM Education Initiative. Girl Scouts introduces girls of every age to STEM experiences relevant to everyday life, and with the financial support from AT&T, girls have the opportunity to attend multiple programs designed to offer a unique opportunity to learn from and interact with professionals in STEMrelated career fields. “STEM is a vital part of the GSNC program, and we are extremely grateful to AT&T for its continued support and generous contributions to our STEM Education Initiative,” said Girl Scouts of Nassau County Interim

Caregiver Support Group Family Service League, a Long Island based nonprofit human service organization, is proud to announce that two additional Caregiver Supports Groups have been formed. These additional Northfork sites give Long Islanders eight convenient locations throughout Suffolk County, from as far west as Huntington, to and to both North an d South Forks. With generous support from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, FSL has provided FREE Caregiver Support Services to individuals caring for a person with disabilities (over age 60) since 2005. These services include individual counseling, support groups and trainings. Timely topics such as estate planning, stress management and nutrition are discussed. On average, FSL has seen 85 clients each month in 1:1 counseling and support groups during calendar year 2017. These groups provide a safe space where caregivers can share their
experiences, concerns and successes. It is also a great venue to learn more about community resources. According to a 2015 National Caregiving survey, more than 42 million family caregivers provide unpaid care for an aging parent, spouse or other loved one so that they may age in place. The value of the care is estimated at $450 billion dollars annually. Nearly two thirds (64%) of caregivers report feeling emotionally stressed, but 94 % say that it is important for them to provide the care for their loved one so they can continue to live independently in their own home. “Families often find themselves thrust into caregiving situations based on a crisis situation. They can become quickly overwhelmed by the enormity of the caregiver role and their own limitations based on distance, job obligations, financial restrictions, and other

family responsibilities,” said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President. “This is compounded by the lack of information about available services. FSL support groups provide the resources families need and there are no fees charged to those who attend.” Caregiver issues may include stresses related to the actual activities associated with caregiving, fear and worry about a loved one dying, concerns about the caregiver’s own health, and guilt associated with feelings of frustration and anger. This program continues to thrive and develop as a vital resource for caregivers. Together, faculty brainstormed ideas for workshops they facilitated in two 45-minute sessions – built on the spot into a board of offerings for the afternoon. These included an array of topics such as “Motivate Students to Learn,” “Resilient
Women,” “The Power of Post-Its,” and “IEP 101.” Kevin Sheehan was also present to facilitate a couple of the workshops. The day concluded with debriefing session in the gymnasium, in which the microphone was passed around so everyone could share their experiences about what they learned from the day. “It was a very successful professional development day,” says Assistant Superintendent John Striffolino, “There was a lot of positive feedback!”

Seaford School District faculty had a full day of professional development during Superintendent’s Conference Day on November 7th. Kevin Sheehan, teacher and coach at Molloy College, gave a districtwide presentation on strength-based teaching and developing a class culture conducive for student learning. The discussion touched on concepts from the book A Growth Mindset by Carol Dweck. Manor School fourth grade teachers presented on their use of
interesting and fun handson learning experiences. The entire cast spent the day at LIHSA rehearsing and spending time with students during a Q & A session where they shared stories about their careers and offered insights to the industry. Theater Tech students worked steadily throughout the day to ensure the technical aspects of the show were executed smoothly. At the start of 2016, pop music legend Billy Joel donated $1 million to LIHSA, along with his
support of the school and its 40-plus-year history of nurturing Long Island’s up-and-coming artists. “I went to public school on Long Island and I am grateful for the music program and my music teachers for helping provide me the tools for which I have based my career,” he wrote in a letter to the Nassau BOCES Board. The Campaign for LIHSA is affiliated with the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, which is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation. The LIHSA campaign includes
educators, artists, students and parents who are committed to supporting the only public arts high school on Long Island. The Long Island High School for the Arts Parent Teacher Student Association’s (PTSA’s) mission is to build a community by enhancing relationships inside and outside LIHSA’s walls. With community support, the PTSA will work to increase enrollment and broaden communication among parents, the school and Nassau BOCES.

Thriving Through The Holidays It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? If you made 229-227 healthy choices, can you imagine where you would be in your health journey? I’m excited to talk to you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them.
