My First Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan ‘Twas the night of Christmas and all the humans have gone home, saddled with packages of presents and leftovers and happy memories of the past two days’ festivities. Me, I’m feverishly swimming laps around my bowl in a desperate attempt to work off the calories from my (multiple) meals and avoid this holiday weight gain I keep hearing so much about. I have to admit, I didn’t understand what the fuss over “Christmas” was all about. All I can say is my human never stopped running to and fro in the weeks leading up to the occasion. Every time she came home – late, I might add, resulting in my dinner being delayed yet again (insert impatient fin tapping here) – she would be carrying all sorts of bags, some filled with food, others with gifts, wrapping paper, greeting cards…

I decided I had better get something to show my appreciation for the great hospitality she has shown me over these last 10 and a half months. I had the human’s mommy pick out an oversized Snoopy stuffed animal, since I’ve noticed all sorts of plush toys around the apartment. The gift card read: To My Dearest Human, Jamie… Love, Your Buddy xoxo And people say I don’t show any gratitude! Me, I made out on the deal pretty well too. I received another gift card in my own personalized mini-stocking, along with a front row seat to Christmas Eve dinner, brunch the following morning and the unwrapping of the presents on Christmas Day. They even decorated my bowl with some ﬂashy red and green bows that I mistook for fellow fishy friends. How exciting! My human has promised me

a proper shopping spree after the new year, and I can’t wait. Although, I must say, I’m fairly low-maintenance as pets go. No fancy castles and shrubbery needed for me – just me and my plant, a generous helping of ﬂakes and maybe a weekly bath to freshen my bowl. Oh, and plenty of humanly love and attention, which I receive in spades. All in all, I am one happy betta. This Christmas thing was pretty exciting, and I hear there are more festivities scheduled for later in the week when a large glittering ball drops from the top of a building. Hopefully I’ll get a front row seat on the coffee table to witness that spectacle! Thanks again to all my readers – your support and fan mail means the world to my little finned self. Happy New Year… I’ll see ya on the ﬂip side!

After reading the novel, the students studied the social and global issues addressed in the book, and adapted the novel to develop a script. They also viewed videos on UN countries where their citizens do not have the same rights as Americans so they could get a global perspective of these issues. “This was a challenging task as they learned how to interpret quotes and gain a deeper understanding of the symbolism and metaphors in the story,” said Manor fifth-grade teacher Danielle Alveari.

PARP CAMPAIGN - Seaford Harbor K-2 students listen to storyteller LuAnn Adams, whose performance launched this year’s PARP campaign.

Seaford fifth graders at both the Manor and Harbor elementary schools presented a Reader’s Theater of skits they wrote after reading and studying human rights issues portrayed in the novel, “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan. In Reader’s Theater style, small groups of students took to the stage with minimal costumes, simple sets and the use of scripts to convey to an audience of parents and friends the various ways Esperanza’s and her family’s human rights were violated. A new law, the CARE Act, makes sure family caregivers are recognized when their loved ones go into the hospital: that they’re designated in the patient’s medical record, notified when the patient will be released, and have the instruction they need to safely help their loved one stay at home. The Damman Fund Inc. has awarded North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center a grant of $7,500 to support its Good Beginnings for Babies (GBB) program, a service that operates out of the Guidance Center’s Leeds Place in Westbury and offers support for pregnant and parenting teens. “Good Beginnings for Babies works with pregnant and parenting teens to promote healthier pregnancies, healthier babies and happier relationships between parent and child,” said Andrew

Malekoff, Executive Director and CEO of the Guidance Center. “The support of the Damman Fund will promote the development of heathy children by ensuring they receive access to prenatal care and promoting preventive care for parents and their children.” Good Beginnings for Babies Program Director Dr. Nellie Taylor-Walthrust said, “In our weekly prenatal and parenting groups, teens receive education on crucial issues such as nutrition, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, newborn

The program also helps foster a sense of community of young parents as they support one other.” Dr. Taylor-Walthrust also noted that the program screens for issues such as maternal depression and other perinatal mood disorders and offers treatment or referrals for mental health care, if needed.

Spreading Joy with Toys Students at the Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools spread joy this season by collecting toys for children in need. Both schools collected hundreds of toys for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation in Wantagh, which distributes them to sick and less fortunate children. The toy drives were led by the Student Council in each school and collected a combined total of more than 500 toys. At the Manor, John Theissen, a Seaford resident, was there to pick up the toys and share with the students how he began his foundation 24 years ago after experiencing

the generosity of others when he was sick in the hospital. The non-profit organization quickly grew into a year round endeavor, bringing toys and other donations to sick and underprivileged children in nearly 200 hospitals and child-care facilities across Long Island. Last year, he distributed more than 84,000 toys that were donated by local residents, he said. “Because of your generosity, you are making an impact on the lives of others; you should be proud of the difference you are making,” Theissen said. After the toys were packed up for the foundation, Student Council members
