Autism FYI www.autismfyi.org Autism FYI (AFYI) is a 501c3 nonprofit o r g a n i z a t i o n dedicated to promoting a safe e n v i r o n m e n t , e m p l o y m e n t opportunities and independence for those on the Autism Spectrum.
In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. IRIS provides 24 hour access to members emergency information and contacts through their emergency hotline.
Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores. This app contains picture language and emojis, so first responders can communicate easily with the individual. It also contains their 24hour emergency hotline information and the 5 Keys To De-Escalation. Thunderbirds will return as headliners for the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Sunday, May 27, 2023 and Monday, May 28, 2023. This year’s Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach will be the U.S. Navy Blue Angel’s 9th appearance as headliners at the show. Over 367,000 people attended the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach the last time the squadron headlined in 2018. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were also scheduled to perform again in 2020 when the show was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team participated in the first Bethpage Virtual Air Show in 2020 by recording special video messages for fans and providing exclusive video footage. Additional 2022 performers will be announced shortly.

FRIENDS OF SARAH-5K - The Sarah Grace Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race this past spring drawing participants from across the country, in the year. The Foundation is also considering the return of the popular Night of Laughter fundraiser dinner if these events can be held safely. New for 2022 will be a clothing drive fundraiser in January. Old clothes can be dropped off at a designated site, and the Foundation would be paid per pound of clothing. Another BakeLESS-Cake Sale is in the works for next summer. The Foundation is also planning restaurant fundraisers, in which Sarah Grace would be the featured charity on certain dates at local restaurants. Supporters would be notified of those dates to dine out at these restaurants and the Foundation would receive a percentage of the sales that night. The masks are adjustable and available in adult and child sizes. The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is ending the year strong and has exciting plans for new and returning events when the calendar turns to 2022. The Hicksville-based organization continues to fulfill its mission of supporting children and their families during cancer treatment. The Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her courageous battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah enjoyed crafts, music and ballgames, and many of the Foundation’s initiatives aim to ignite that same spark in other children. Most recently, the Foundation held its annual Holiday Extravaganza raffle, which raised more than $4,000. The funds provided financial aid for holiday meals and gifts to struggling families. Ongoing toy drives have enabled the Foundation to send gifts to children at its core hospitals including Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. To mark Childhood Cancer Month in September, anyone who made a $10 donation to the Foundation received a gold ribbon pin or a gold ribbon magnet, or a $20 donation for both. The gold ribbon is the official symbol of children with cancer worldwide. This year, Sarah would have turned 31, so in the spring the Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race – the equivalent of 3.1 miles. The race drew more than 70 participants from across the country and generated approximately $4,800 to help support the Foundation’s initiatives. The event was so successful in its inaugural year that the Foundation is considering hosting two race events next year; An inperson 5K race in addition to another virtual race later

Long Island State Parks To Host 27th Annual Winter Run Series
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 27th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2022. The series will begin Sunday, January 9th at Heckscher State Park. With holiday music blasting overhead, dozens of Northwell Health employees gathered together for a marathon gift-wrapping session to ensure that school-age children enjoy a happy holiday season. “I am so proud of each Northwell employee and all of our community partners who made this joyful event possible,” said Edward Fraser, vice president of Community Relations at Northwell. “Today, literally hundreds of our team members joined together to wrap thousands of gifts for children in the communities we serve. It is our belief that no child
should be denied the gift of joy at the holidays.” Through an on-line platform operated by Northwell’s nonprofit project partner, Supplies for Success, employee donations were used to provide art supplies and other gifts for different age categories. No contribution was too great or too small. And, the results are impressive: more than $40,000 was collected for this worthy cause. All the wrapped gifts will be distributed to families who cannot afford them in in four Long Island communities (Brentwood, Bay Shore, Freeport, Hempstead) as well as

Doors Decorated With Thought At Seaford Middle School

A festive tradition continued this December at Seaford Middle School with the National Junior Honor Society’s door decorating contest. More than 80 students from the organization decorated 55 classroom and office doors throughout the building, beginning their work after Thanksgiving. “It’s just to promote happiness and to get everyone in the holiday spirit,” said guidance counselor Sarah Busch, co-adviser of NJHS with teacher Jenna Lubicich. First place went to
Kaylie Conklin, Allyson Cullingford and Meghan Stovall who decorated art teacher Stephanie Lucia’s door and adjacent wall with stockings, a fireplace and a Christmas tree with a soccer ball underneath, since she coaches soccer. Students added many personal touches to their designs. The secondplace winners, Nicholas Kanellopoulos, Matthew Kind and Michael Spinella, decorated the door of teacher Alex Mantay with a snowman dunking a basketball. Mr. Mantay is Seaford’s junior varsity
basketball coach. Third-place winners Emily Bauman, Cameron Calderaro and Brianna Sidoti know that teacher Susan Steinberg loves squirrels, so their idea for her door featured squirrels at a ski slope. Another strong entry was by Dylan Alt, Ryan Falta and Nikolas Taboada, who has science teacher Kevin Mullany’s door. Their concept was a scientist, standing above Seaford Middle School, holding a beaker with snowballs exploding out of it. They even added lights and a picture of Mr.

joy to students and staff, helps promote NJHS. She hopes that it encourages sixth and seventh graders to maintain an average

The Nassau County Legislature Rules Committee has approved a resolution that confirms Nassau County’s commitment to fund a half million dollar matching grant that will permit the Museum of American Armor to build a much needed maintenance/repair facility behind its main building inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
