As a matter of standard practice, all Long Island and Hudson Valley hospitals enforce universally recognized precautions to prevent the flu. These include hand washing, the use of hand sanitizers placed conveniently throughout the hospital, as well as goggles and gowns. In addition, all hospitals adhere to rigorous infection control guidelines and policies every day to ensure a clean environment for patients, staff, and

visitors. These practices are especially important during flu season. Antiseptic wipes are located in patient rooms, workstations, hallways, and other treatment areas and are easily accessible to hospital employees responsible for sanitizing medical equipment and surface areas. “Flu prevention is a priority at all hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley. Hospital employees work every day to lessen the spread of flu virus by adhering to strict infection control practices and prevention

guidelines,” said Wendy Darwell, president/CEO of the Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State, the organization that represents hospitals in the nine counties east and north of New York City. “Hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities must also document the number and percentage of personnel vaccinated against the flu to state and federal authorities.” Most hospitals offer flu shot clinics. Celebrating The New Year Celebrating the new year on January 1 is a relatively recent phenomenon. The calendar as we know it today has evolved several times and months have gone by different names. On the early Roman calendar, March was the first month of the 10-month calendar. That is why the last four months of the year have prefixes that coordinate with the seventh (September), eighth (October), ninth (November), and tenth (December) numerals. King Numa Pompilius reformed the calendar around 700 BCE by adding the months of January and February to the original 10 months. But the calendar still required some additional tweaking to be more aligned with the seasons. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar introduced a solarbased calendar that was an improvement on the ancient Roman one, which was lunarbased. During this time, the month of Quintilis was renamed July in honor of Julius Caesar and Sextilis was renamed August in honor of Augustus. Shortly after the introduction of the solar calendar, the beginning of the year was moved from March 1 to January 1.

Already active in student life at Seaford High School, four sophomores will be able to take their involvement to next level as they have been selected to attend the 2024 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership conference in June. Alyssa Fariello, Matthew Kind, Mia Leggio and Victoria Stebner will be the school’s next HOBY ambassadors and hope to use the skills they learn to make a positive difference at school and in the community. “It’s an honor,” Alyssa said. “I’m happy that I was selected and I’m hoping to learn how to be a better leader.” Alyssa is president of the Knitting and Crochet Club, a member of the Culture Club and Leos Club and plays clarinet in the band. Matthew is involved with student government as president of the sophomore class, is treasurer of the Key Club, a member of Best Buddies and plays junior varsity football and baseball. For Mia, her involvement includes being secretary of the sophomore class, vice president of Best Buddies, a singer in the chorale,

a member of the Bracket Leadership Team and a three-sport athlete in soccer, track and field and lacrosse. Victoria belongs to the cheerleading squad, is secretary of the new Fishing Club, a member of the Color Guard and Key Club, and a flutist in the band. “I’m excited to see how I will grow and how I will use what I learn to help others grow,” Victoria said. More than 20 students were nominated to be HOBY ambassadors, following teacher recommendations. All candidates had interviews with a panel of administrators, teachers, guidance counselors and past HOBY ambassadors. “It’s a tough competition to be selected because we thrive on building leaders,” Principal Nicole Schnabel said. “They’re our ambassadors of the future. We’re going to be counting on them to train future leaders, and that’s a meaningful role.” Matthew is the second member of his family to be chosen, as his brother, Billy, was a HOBY ambassador in 2021. He said he wants to take the lessons from

the conference to become more comfortable as a leader and also help lift up others at Seaford High School. “It’s great to see that my hard work and leadership was recognized,” he said. “I’m looking forward to being a role model and setting an example for others.” Mia said she wants to be an inclusive leader, who can confidently make decisions after listening to the opinions of her peers. “I hope by doing this, I’ll become a better, stronger leader,” Mia said. HOBY’s 2024 New York Metro region conference will be held from June 7-9 at Adelphi University. Alyssa, Matthew, Mia and Victoria will be among approximately 150 student ambassadors from Long Island, New York City, and Westchester and Rockland counties to attend. The program will include guest speakers, workshops, leadership activities and social events. “It’s been such a long tradition at Seaford High School,” Alyssa said, “and to be a part of that means a lot.”

Seaford Manor Elementary School students are learning just what it takes to be a Seaford Scholar. Throughout the year, they are getting an indepth look at the 10 pillars of the Seaford Scholars profile, an initiative that was introduced in September. Each grade has two social and emotional learning sessions per month, which are led by social worker Jennifer DeMieri

All sessions included a video reading of “The Bad Seed,” a picture book by author Jory John and illustrator Pete Oswald that focuses on the personal ability of positive change. Students also left with a toolkit of self-awareness activities, such as writing in a journal, making a gratitude list, creating a vision board and doing an emotions check-in. Ms. DeMieri and Ms. Friedman will focus on all 10 pillars by the end of the year. Seaford Scholars are communicators, flexible, humorous, innovators, mindful, networkers, principled, reflective, resilient and risk takers. “Each session is vital because it is teaching students skills they will need throughout their whole lives,” Ms. DeMieri said. “The goal is that when they leave here, they are equipped and ready to navigate the many challenges of the world.”

Breast Cancer Survivors Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. Tips To Stay The Course With A New Diet The dawn of a new year marks a great time to turn over a new leaf. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions, and aspiring to eat healthier is annually among the most popular pledges health-conscious individuals make. A recent Statista survey of hundreds of people across the globe found that eating healthier was the second most popular New Year’s resolution of 2023. 50 percent of respondents indicated they set goals to eat healthier in the year ahead. Though each year is different, it’s fair to assume a similarly large percentage of resolution-minded individuals will aspire to eat healthier over the next 12 months. As people begin their journeys to a healthier lifestyle, they can consider these strategies to stay the course with a new diet. • Do not eat too close to bedtime. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found that eating more of a day’s total energy intake in the evening is associated with a higher risk of being overweight or obese. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating more of the day’s energy intake at midday can lower the risk of being overweight or obese. Individuals are more likely to stay the course when they see positive results, so try to eat dinner several hours before bedtime and resist the urge to snack after dinnertime. • Treat yourself, but only periodically. It’s unreasonable and potentially counterproductive to avoid foods seen as treats completely. Cutting out indulgent foods may seem appropriate, but such an approach could make you miserable, and a diet that sparks feelings of misery will prove harder to commit to than one that allows for the occasional indulgence. Moderation is the name of the game, and that should be a rule of thumb for both healthy foods and indulgences. Don’t make indulgences part of your daily routine, even if you eat them in moderation. Rather, save treats for special occasions, and even then only eat them in moderation.

• Consider eating less, but more frequently. Data is conflicting regarding eating smaller but more frequent meals. A 2015 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that individuals with six or more eating occasions in 24 hours had a lower mean body mass index than those with four or fewer eating occasions in 24 hours. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating a larger number of small meals throughout the day may be associated with improved diet quality and lower BMI. This approach is commonly referred to as “grazing,” and some research has indicated it has no metabolic advantage over other approaches to eating. So what to make of the mixed results? Dieters can decide for themselves and eat more frequent but smaller, healthier meals to combat hunger pangs that can arise when switching to a new diet. If hunger no longer poses a threat that can derail your diet, then this approach might increase the chances you stay committed to eating right.
