The Seaford High School Students Against Destructive Decisions club held its Stomp Out Stigma shoe drive for the holidays. Students and staff could donate new or gently used shoes from December 1014. All donations, including boots, flip-flops, shoes, slippers and sneakers, were given to the Shoes For All foundation which provides footwear to people in need from ministries and shelters throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The shoe drive also

club adviser Dr. Chelsea Emerman said the purpose was to educate students about the harmful impacts of stigmatizing people with

mental health conditions. They received fact sheets from the National Alliance on Mental Health.

New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go. On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact

entertainment editors around the world, introduce myself and my old column, let them know I was looking to begin again and ask if they would like to join my new syndication network. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because

I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness. This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937

people on Long Island are homeless. 75% are families with children. The following story shows an example of what is possible when help is provided and hope is not lost! When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now! “The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.” If you wish to inquire about receiving help as well, or you want to volunteer and or donate to this organization, please contact their Development Director, Denise Waterhouse at DWaterhouse@OptionsCL.org!

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! If I do not reach my fundraising goal, they will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in sub-Saharan Africa. I can not imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I can’t sit back and do nothing about this problem. The Seaford High School student council will be making hundreds of children happy this Christmas. Donations from students, staff and the community made the annual toy drive a tremendous success, and kept student council members busy afterschool sorting and wrapping presents. Student council President Chris Schneider will play the part of Santa Claus on December 20th and 21st as he and his elves visit several locations throughout Nassau County to hand out toys. Stops will include the Hempstead and Westbury Head Start programs, the Mercy First

orphanage and Nassau University Medical Center’s pediatric center. All toys are labeled so when a child makes a request to Santa, it can instantaneously be fulfilled. “It’s important to help those who are less fortunate than us, especially in the season of giving,” Chris said. “This toy drive warms my heart and puts me in the Christmas spirit.” Every child at each of the four stops will be provided with a toy, a trinket, a stuffed animal and a candy cane. The student council, led by advisers Tania Cintorino and Shari Raduazzo, was also adopting three local families to provide toys and

necessities. Students and staff donated toys throughout December, and any teacher who made a contribution had his or her door decorated by volunteers from the National Honor Society. Student council members handed out letters in the community and traveled around Seaford on Dec. 16 to pick up toys left out for them on doorsteps. “It’s amazing how everyone in the community is so loving to give all these presents,” said Aidan Crean, who led the toy drive committee with fellow students Melissa Schoenig and Kate McClernon.

Decorating the Halls Doors to classrooms and offices at Seaford Middle School are a bit more festive, thanks to the efforts of students in the National Junior Honor Society. The 74 honor society members split into teams and decorated doors throughout the building to transform it for the last week before the holiday break. Students used wrapping paper,

construction paper, stickers and other craft supplies for their holiday creations. Among the clever designs were the geometree for a math classroom and a Feliz Navidad theme for the Spanish classroom. Students decorated the outside of the parent center to resemble a gingerbread house, and another door paid homage to Destiny’s

Child with Sleigh My Name. Popular characters such as Charlie Brown and Snoopy, Olaf from “Frozen” and the Elf on a Shelf also made appearances. Adviser MaryLou Christenson said that Deck the Doors helps fulfill the honor society’s community service mission, as the annual event fills students and staff with joy and holiday spirit.
