Students Show Their Kind Hearts
Every elementary school has a holiday sale that allows students to go shopping for their friends and family, but Seaford Manor Elementary School’s Snowflake Village also includes a charitable component. Second graders create handmade items with proceeds from their sales going to a charity of
their choice. This year, students made flower pens, necklaces, ornaments and wreath pins, among other items, which were quickly purchased by eager young shoppers. Before making and selling their items, second graders learned about business concepts including supply and demand, and
producers and consumers. After their sales were complete, students from Jean Aplustille, AnneMarie Motisi and Denise Stevens’ classes selected the Heartprint Fund as its charity. The organization is run by Manor school nurse Julie Canale to benefit Seaford families in need.

Students Send Love To Shelter Pets Seaford Harbor Elementary School students know that there are a lot of animals just waiting to be adopted, so they want to make life a little better for cats and dogs who haven’t yet found their new home. The student council recently hosted its inaugural Paws for a Cause drive, collecting pet food, toys and beds for animals at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh. To generate excitement and encourage donations, the drive was turned into a competition with a prize
for the winning grade level. The fifth grade won, with students contributing 80 items to Paws for a Cause. Student council adviser Kerry Hansen said that donations from all six grade levels totaled nearly 250 items. As its prize, the fifth grade was treated to an assembly with representatives from the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, who introduced students to service dogs. Ms. Hansen said that the idea for the animal supply drive came from PTA volunteer

In six-member teams and volunteering in twohour shifts on Dec. 6, students went to Stop & Shop stores in Seaford and Massapequa, as well as King Kullen in Wantagh, handing out food drive fliers to shoppers asking for non-perishable items and frozen hams and turkeys. They then collected the food as people left the stores. National Honor Society officers Erica Albert and Paige Donovan said that although it was a cold day, all of the student volunteers were in good spirits and enthusiastic about their charitable endeavor. “We were very proud of the amount of food we

An idea that started as a way for Seaford Manor Elementary School staff members to spread joy to each other during the holiday season quickly was embraced by students, who also wanted to bring each other cheer. Joy jars were set up in the school’s faculty lounge, one for each of the approximately 160
staff members including teachers, aides, secretaries, custodians, cafeteria staff and security guards. Throughout December, staff members could leave positive messages or inspiration quotes in the jars of their colleagues for a gift to be taken home the day before holiday break. Third graders then adopted the concept
and set up their own joy jars in the classrooms. Students left each other notes with compliments and other happy messages. Teacher Lisa Doris said it was a great idea to create a positive and uplifting atmosphere. “Tis the season for spreading kindness and joy,” she said.

Seaford School District music department staff and administrators recently attended the Nassau Music Educators Association’s Administration dinner at The Cottage at the Milleridge Inn. At the annual event, music teachers from across Nassau County honor their administrators for the success that results from their support of school
music programs. There was food and live music throughout the evening.
