The Long Island Chapter of Autism Speaks awarded more than $25,000 to 6 local service providers in the area including: Life’s WORC - Student Success Program Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation Big Time Glee and CLIFF Community Based Social Groups Valley Stream South High School - Social Skills Training Project Spectrum Designs Foundation - Expanding the Spectrum of Opportunities Kulanu Center for Special Services - Sunday Inclusion Social Activities for Young Adults with ASD & Other Disabilities NY Therapy Placement Services/NYT Kids Promoting Life-Long Social Skills Through Sensory, Motor & Social Groups Integrated in the

Community Programs funded by this grant help expand existing programs to serve more individuals or create new programs that demonstrate innovation in providing services to enrich the lives of individuals with autism. Grant recipients were selected based on recommendations from each Chapter and local Autism Speaks volunteers. Recipients were awarded up to $5,000 addressing the areas of education, recreation and community activities, young adult/adult services and technology. Funded programs include museum inclusion programs; iPads and SmartBoards for classrooms; mentoring programs with peers; training for Spanish speaking families; theatre programs; support groups and more. “With the successful

launch of last year’s Chapter Grants, we were pleased to expand the opportunity this year for local service providers to help fund unique and resourceful programs that will benefit our chapter communities and add to existing services for individuals with autism,” said Cathy Kanefsky, Autism Speaks vice president of Chapter Development. All recipients of the 2013 Autism Speaks Chapter Grants can be found on the Autism Speaks website, as well as the searchable online grant database. All applicants have also been added to the Autism Speaks Family Services Resource Guide, as the organization continues to connect families and service providers with resources in their communities. Grant applications will be open again next year fall.

Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism and science advocacy organization, announced today that it has awarded more than $250,000 to 54 local organizations through its 2013 Chapter Grants program which was open to all 11 Autism Speaks Chapters (Carolinas, Chicagoland, Long Island, National Capital Area, New England, New Jersey, Ohio, Southern California, South Florida, St. Louis, and Western Pennsylvania). Following being called up to the NHL last week, New York Islanders “shinning” center Ryan Strome, along with defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky and Calvin deHaan, spent an afternoon delivering toys they personally selected in the pediatric unit at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. The professional hockey players were friendly and personable, making the children feel special. “It’s so important when the community recognizes these kids

are sick, especially over the holidays,” said Good Samaritan Hospital’s Child Life Program Director Joan Alpers. “Having these star athletes spend time with the children certainly brightens their day.” Among those visited was Islander fan Travis Semcken. He shared his recent experience of being given a puck at an Islander game. The players were very taken by Travis’ spirit and enthusiasm for the sport. He will be attending a game in the near future compliments of the team.

“Visiting with the children is the least we can do. Being able to put smiles on the faces of these kids, even for a moment, makes it all worth it,” said Visnovsky. The players went from room to room, discussing sports, TV episodes, how often they get hurt in a game and whatever else the children wanted to talk about. As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

with the opportunity to learn from great educators around the state is a fantastic concept.” One of the things that excites coordinator Regina Moraitis is that this grant will allow a team of Long Island teachers to create seven new online AP courses that will be saved on the Nassau BOCES learning management system and will be available for school districts to use. “Nassau BOCES is proud to be leading a project that will make AP courses available to students who would not previously have had the opportunity due to low enrollment or funding issues,” said Moraitis, who is the agency’s Distance Education Services Coordinator. “Additionally, the grant ensures that students will have access to the technology needed to take the courses, by providing the districts with tablets and laptop computers.”

Teachers from Nassau BOCES and participating districts spent part of their summer learning how to develop powerful online content and planning out their courses. “This is an exciting and forwardthinking project,” said Chris Mangum, an Emmyaward winning Nassau BOCES teacher at the Long Island High School for the Arts who is developing an online course for AP Music Theory. “The challenge involves designing and building an approach that will engage, serve and support students.” The districts participating from Nassau County are Freeport, Glen Cove, Hempstead, Malverne, Roosevelt and West Hempstead; in Suffolk County, the participating districts are Amityville, Bridgehampton, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, North Babylon, South Country, Southampton, West Babylon and Wyandanch.

Students from across Long Island are taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses that were previously not available in their high schools. These courses – ranging from Macro Economics to Biology – are being offered online thanks to a $2 million grant from the New York State Education Department that was awarded to a Nassau BOCES-led consortium, which includes Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES. Long Island’s very own professional baseball team, the Long Island Ducks, were a big hit with patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during a special visit for the holidays. Former New York Met Bud Harrelson, co-owner and Senior VP of Baseball Operations of the Ducks was joined by team mascot QuackerJack and radio station B103’s The Wiseman and Frank. QuackerJack, flopped

his way around the whole inpatient pediatric unit at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on December 17th, bringing wrapped toys to hospitalized patients. Autographs were signed, photos were snapped and there were even a few glimpses of Harrelson’s 1986 World Championship ring, which he received while playing for the Mets. The visit was part of the Ducks’ annual Holiday Toy

Drive, where QuackerJack and team members deliver toys to children in pediatric units in hospitals across Long Island. The month-long effort resulted in hundreds of children receiving toys this holiday season. Popular to thousands of families on Long Island, the Ducks are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play locally at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip.

“I knew it was an easy program,” said junior Dominic Scicutella, “but I’m really impressed that they were able to learn it so fast and with little guidance.” Senior Emilia Rubio, who plans to major in computer science in college next year, said, “This is awesome, I love the idea of teaching kids. I hope it inspires them to take computer science in high school and beyond.” According to club advisor Lauren Thompsen, much of coding is intuitive. “If you look around the room, all of the students

are engaged. They are learning to problem solve and are strengthening their reading skills through coding which aligns beautifully with the new Common Core Learning Standards. Computer science can also fall under the new state diploma requirements for 2014-15 which requires a CDOS (career development and occupational studies) component to help prepare students for the careers of the future.” The computer club plans to return to the middle school to further

teach students who are interested in learning more about computer science. The Islanders even gave out ticket vouchers to some of the families, good for any date their children were out of the hospital and well-enough to attend a game. The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York Islanders. Through the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s, professionals provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of

hospitalized children. Activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.

BRINGING CHEER TO PEDIATRICS - LI Ducks’ QuackerJack, along with Manager Kevin Baez, B103 personalities, the Wiseman and Frank and owners of PC Richard Appliances visited the Pediatric Department of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip to celebrate the holiday season. They went room to room distributing toys, donated by the Richard family and collected through a toy drive at the ballpark. Among those visited was LI Ducks’ fan, 9 year-old Emma. QuackerJack and his friends put a huge smile on the little girl’s face.

PEDIATRIC CENTER VISIT - Four members of the New York Islanders, joined nurses and hospital officials during their annual visit to the pediatric units at the Nassau University Medical Center. The Islanders visited with each of the children and their parents, bringing signed autographs and toys to help cheer the children up during their hospital stay.

Four professional hockey players from the New York Islanders played Santa on December 18th and scored big points with hospitalized children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Aaron Ness (#55) and Radek Martinek (#4) along with goalie Kevin Poulin (#60), delivered toys, other gifts, and good cheer to the patients and their families. During the previous week, the Islanders took a break from the ice to go on a shopping spree to choose gifts ranging from board games to Barbie dolls to bring to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. About 70 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The foursome
