‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

Harpist Entertains Seaford Harbor Elementary School first graders had the opportunity to listen to a harpist during their music class with Linda Grieco. The musician, Katharine Saxton, has a daughter,

Charlotte, in the class. After her performance, Charlotte sat at the harp and played “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” for her classmates, who also had a chance to try the instrument.

Students learned how the harp produces sound through vibrations in the strings and marveled at the angelic sounds of the instrument.

The Culinary Institute was designed for any individual interested in entering the culinary field in a professional capacity. Programs offer indepth experience and teach the hands-on skills needed to be successful in the food service industry. Classes cover local and national health codes, basic knife skills, equipment maintenance, preparing of restaurant-style food, baking, dessert preparation, and training for the ServStaf and Nassau County Board of Health exams. Courses are taught by award-winning, state-certified chefs and culinary professionals. The Culinary Institute is a seven-month program, beginning in January 2015 and running four nights a week. At less than half the cost of most colleges and certificate programs these courses include uniforms, books and cutlery. Digital Design for Business teaches creative students or those who want to become more creative a variety of techniques to promote their businesses. Students will use current technology and a variety of programs in Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator, InDesign, Flash and Photoshop. They will also be trained in basic html, TSS and WordPress. Students will learn advertising design including logo, label, poster and package design, photo retouching, web design and animation. They will also learn how to create fullcolor brochures, cartoon storyboards and children’s books. At the open house visitors can also speak to career counselors in the Career Assessment and Coaching Center, and make an appointment to determine the best possible career path based on individual strengths and skill sets. “At a time when our nation is focused on college and career readiness, job creation and economic recovery, addressing adult education on Long Island is critical,” said Laura Holder-Gibbs, principal of Nassau BOCES Adult Education. Courses are available in more than 40 fields, including those showing marked industry growths, such as health professions and the trades. The Health Occupations program features training for indemand careers, from medical and dental assisting, to medical billing and coding. High-growth trade courses include: heating,

In Honor Of Glenn On December 17th, Marc Rosenzweig of Willow Pet Hotel presented a check from their second annual fundraiser, which raised $1883 for the purchase of canine bulletproof vests for the local K9 units. Additionally, after seeing the story on NEWS 12, Ballistics Expert for the NYPD, Sal LaCova of Survival Armor, donated an additional vest for the cause to be presented at the event. Willow Pet Hotel’s 2nd Annual Pet Awareness Festival was a great success in raising funding for canine bullet proof vests. MTA K9 officers James Chirillo (K9Danny), James Finn (K9-Glenn- named after the late Glenn Pettit), Alan Fong (K9-George), Al Kirsch (K9-Sentry) and Robert Savage (K9-Cannan) donated their time by demonstrating how they work with their canines and explaining the importance of bulletproof vests. Since most municipalities lack the funding to provide canine vests, the event was important in creating awareness, as well as raising funds for the purchase of vests. At one point during the fundraiser, the spotlight was on officer James Finn. Officer Finn was interviewed by News 12 Long Island due to his decision to name his dog, K9 Glenn, in honor of NYPD Officer Glenn Pettit, who was tragically killed on September 11th, 2001. With

that in mind, Willow Pet Hotel decided to donate these bulletproof vests in honor of Officer Pettit. On December 17th, Willow Pet Hotel hosted the presentation of the vest and monetary donations to pay for two additional vests for the United States Police Canine Association region 7 (USPCA7) K9 Division. Officers and

their four-legged partners were in attendance to accept the donations. The donations exceeded expectations, and two vests were purchased, and the third was donated by Det. Sal LaCova. The vests will be presented to three different

police divisions: NYPD Transit Canine Division, MTA canine and NYPD Emergency Services Canine Unit. “This day is for all of the canines that help protect us every day,” says Willow Pet Hotel owner-operator Marc Rosenzweig. “We wanted to give back to the community and show that we are always there and willing to support one another. We take care of pets for a living, so we decided to raise money and support those who protect and support us. It’s the right thing to do.” Rosenzweig also went on to say that, “This was a day full of fun that brought the community together.” Willow Pet Hotel is one of Long Island’s oldest and most respected pet boarding establishments.
