Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we

can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In

the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Seaford students from third through twelfth grade joined millions of youngsters around the globe in logging into Code.org to learn the basics of computer coding during the annual “Hour of Code” campaign. Held in conjunction with Computer Science Education Week, December 7th-13th, the campaign aims to take the mystery out of computer coding and show how anyone can learn the basics. Seaford High School Computer Science teacher Lauren Thompsen, who has coordinated the event in the district since the campaign’s inception in 2013, was pleased to see participation expand from the high school down to both elementary schools. Harbor fifth-grade students in Roman Wojcik’s class took to coding easily. They started in September when the school obtained iPads and have been working individually and collaboratively to master the different levels offered through the programs on the website. “The students help each other,” Wojcik said. “We’re all teachers here, learning and problem solving together.” Because it is web-based, students can log in anywhere and build their skills in computer coding on their own. If they run into a problem, there’s a “hint” box to help them along. Teachers can also monitor students’ progress through their own account. Older students

can create fun drawings or video games while learning the basics of JavaScript programming, for example, and younger ones can learn how to build their own games using relatable programs such as those that feature Star Wars and Frozen characters. “I like how it makes you test out your abilities,” said fifth-grader Madden Coppola who, by logging in at

school and at home, has advanced beyond most of her classmates. “It’s like your very own video game because you get to make it yourself.” For the first time, Manor third- and fifth-grade students logged in during library time with teacherlibrarian Claire Mitchell, who was trained in coding.

Fifth-graders also had the help of high school seniors from the Computer Club who answered their questions and gave them a brief introduction into computer coding. Students said it was “fun,” “cool” and “challenging,” and “liked the way blocks are used as a language to build your own games.” At the high school level, students also participated in the library throughout the week. “It’s fun and it helps you think, which helps you with other classes,” said junior Joe Hujber, who has taken advantage of the computer science offerings at Seaford High School. “It opens your mind in ways you never thought possible.” Seaford High School offers an introductory course, Introduction to Game Design, and the opportunity to earn up to 10 college credits, through Advanced Placement and SUNY Farmingdale, before leaving high school. According to Thompsen, who also advises the high school Computer Club, much of coding is intuitive. “It teaches problem solving and builds reading and critical thinking skills, which are essential to be college and career ready in the 21st century. Introducing the Hour of Code at the elementary level opens the door for many more of our students to take an interest in or even pursue a career in one of the fastest growing fields around the world today.”

Guilds Support he Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $65,333 to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. This donation will enhance the hospital’s anesthesia services by supporting the acquisition

of an Apollo® Anesthesia Machine, an advanced system with ventilation technology to support patients of any age. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2015 donations to a total of more than $211,000 for various

programs, including surgical intensive care and emergency services. Made up of volunteers from surrounding communities, the Guilds have raised more than $10 million for the hospital since 1958.

Seaford High School has once again earned the Blue Star Award for high student achievement in financial literacy. The recognition was awarded by W!SE (Working in Support of Education), a nonprofit organization that provides educational support services that build financial literacy, foster business and social entrepreneurship, and prepare students for college and the global workplace. To earn a Blue Star, schools must have a 75% passing rate on the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test among 10 or more students and have either a majority

of students on the same grade level take the test or have the students who took it achieve an average score of 80% or higher. Seaford has exceeded these requirements seven years in a row. To prepare for the test, Seaford students were taught a range of financial topics, including budgeting, banking, investing, money management and insurance, according to social studies teacher Scott Gilbert, who teaches Economics 12, a required course for seniors, along with his colleagues Theresa Karp and Lori Fritsch. The test was administered to 144 seniors or about 75 %

of the senior class. Among the 25 % that did not take the test are those enrolled in College Economics, which commands a more demanding course load. In addition to the Blue Star honor, all three teachers were recognized as a Gold Star Teacher for having 96% of their students pass the online test. Principal Scott Bersin said, “Financial literacy is such an important skill to teach our students and we are proud to be among the schools that provide students with an appropriate level of instruction that will be useful to them in college and throughout their lives.”

Over two million New Yorkers are caring for an older parent, spouse or other loved one, helping them to live independently at home. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, and now there’s support in place that will make life a little bit easier for them. A new law, the CARE Act, makes sure family caregivers are recognized when their loved ones go into the hospital: that they’re designated in the patient’s medical record, notified when the patient will be released, and have the instruction they need to safely help their loved one stay at home. AARP New York went to work at the Capitol to make this kind of support a reality, because supporting family caregivers is a top priority for all of us.
