New Contest!

There is now greater knowledge of space, thanks to the work of three Seaford High School science research students who took part in a study funded by NASA. Class of 2021 graduate Peter Weber and current juniors Matthew Martorana and Kailly Nocera were a research team in the 2020-2021 Exploration of the Moon and Asteroids by Secondary Students program. Peter, Kailly and Matthew studied the 4 Vesta asteroid as well as crater formations on the moon. Only 10 high schools in the country participated last year in the Lunar Planetary Institute program, funded through the NASA Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute. Their work, which began in the summer of 2020 and continued throughout the school year, was then judged at a virtual competition and their final paper was published by the American Astronomical Society. The young

astronomers focused on formations in the moon’s craters including central peaks and pits, and explored if these features were related to different materials on the moon. They observed different icy and rocky bodies. Peter, Kailly and Matthew used JMARS, a geospatial information system with images of the moon, Earth, Mars and several other planets. The students noted that it is widely unknown how these peaks and pits are formed, so their research will help fill gaps in knowledge about the moon. “We contributed one piece of the larger puzzle,” Matthew said. This was the first astronomy-based project for Seaford’s science research program. While students typically choose from among several science competitions to enter their work into, this project was specifically for the ExMASS event. Peter, Kailly and Matthew met with judges virtually to share their work, which included a

poster presentation. Kailly explained that one of the biggest challenges for this competition was the very strict deadlines that NASA had for different components of the project. They did have the support of a mentor, Dr. Michael Zeilnhofer, who they met with virtually throughout the year, in addition to their science research teachers, Janine Cupo and Mary Simons. This past summer, Peter, Kailly and Matthew were also able to present at an invitation-only virtual science event, the NASA Exploration Science Forum/European Lunar Symposium. They were questioned about their research by some of the top scientists in the world and also got to see the work of fellow student researchers, both at the high school and college levels. Peter is now a freshman at Stony Brook University, Kailly in is her second year in Seaford High School’s science research program and Matthew is in his third year.

Councilwoman Walsh Cautions Residents Not To Fall Victim To Holiday Scams

Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Vicki Walsh cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone and internet scams this Holiday Season, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Whether on the phone or online, scammers often pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency in an attempt to intimidate the recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone numbers can also be falsified to appear as

a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and firstgeneration Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need, especially during these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls and websites that appear suspicious, especially those requesting money or personal information, even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” You can take these

proactive steps to ensure you and your family aren’t scam victims: If you receive a call from a number you do not recognize, do not answer the phone. If you do, hang up the phone immediately. Don’t press numbers to speak to a live operator or take your number off the list, as this just confirms your phone number. Ask your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers. Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. Don’t click on any suspicious links or attachments in emails and on websites. Alexandra Fishman of Seaford joins the administrative team at Nassau BOCES Children’s Readiness Center for the 2021-22 school year. A leader in the field of special education, Ms. Fishman brings a wealth of experience to the team. She is committed to the Nassau BOCES mission of empowering “students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.” Ms. Fishman has served Nassau BOCES as a special educator in a number of capacities. She was a teacher aide and substitute teacher at Willet Avenue School, for

students with significant developmental delays and multiple disabilities. She also served as part of the multidisciplinary team for the middle school program at Robert Williams School, dedicated to meeting the needs of students with learning, behavioral, emotional and developmental disabilities. Ms. Fishman was a group leader at the Town of Hempstead’s Camp ANCHOR for children and adults with special needs, as well as a team leader for a mentor scholar program serving at-risk middle school students. She was also a trained scorer for the New York State ELA

and math assessments for grades three through eight. Ms. Fishman holds ten education certifications from the State of New York, including: certification as a school building and district leader; childhood education; teaching students with disabilities; nonviolent crisis intervention and emergency response; and general education in science, ELA, math and social studies. She holds master’s degrees from Hunter College and Hofstra University, and a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Oswego.

Students throughout the Seaford School District are showing their generosity this holiday season. With several community service initiatives, they are helping out others in need across Long Island. Seaford Harbor Elementary School’s newly reconstituted Safety Patrol held its first charitable drive, collecting winter accessories for the Long Island Coalition for the

Homeless from Nov. 30 to Dec. 15. A donation box was placed in the lobby for gloves, hats and scarves. “I’m glad to be a part of being able to donate these items to people less fortunate than me,” fifth grader Lyla Hanshe said. “It makes me happy to know that I’m making a difference.” The student council at Seaford High School began its annual toy drive

on Dec. 6. Officers will visit Head Start early childhood education centers in Hempstead and Westbury to fulfill wishes for approximately 190 kids. Each child will receive a toy, a book and various trinkets. Additional toys will be provided to children at the MercyFirst home in Syosset while surplus toys from last year will be donated to Hope for Youth.

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato recently announced that residents may apply for New York State property tax exemptions from now through January 3, 2022. Homeowners wishing to receive exemptions on their 2022-2023 School taxes and 2023 General taxes must file with the Nassau County Department of Assessment or New York State prior to the January 3rd deadline. “I want to make sure that every resident who is eligible, whether they’re a senior citizen, veteran, new homeowner, volunteer firefighter/EMT, person with a disability, or person

The requirements to qualify are based on the person’s disability, ownership, residency and occupancy status, and income. Persons with incomes less than $37,400 can qualify to receive an exemption from 5% to 50% of the assessed value. • H o m e Improvement Tax Reductions Program for
