New Foundation Launched first president.” Spiegel, whose wife Ellen serves on the ACLD Board of Trustees and whose son has received support from ACLD for more than 40 years, is a senior advisor with Anchin, Block & Anchin, LLP. He has worked extensively with high net worth individuals, family foundations and non-profit organizations, and has written numerous articles on charitable giving. A longtime supporter of ACLD, Spiegel also serves on several ACLD committees. Along with his wife, Spiegel has been a major gift-giver in support of ACLD, including their naming donation of ACLD’s Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore. Spiegel will work together with fellow ACLD Foundation Officers John Genova of Bay Shore, who serves as Foundation vice president, and Jamie Engel of Port Washington, who the Foundation’s secretary and treasurer. My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,
becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with
perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Islandbased, not-for-profit agency headquartered in Long Island devoted to providing opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities to purse an enviable life, has launched a Foundation to focus on fundraising and increasing awareness of ACLD’s mission, which is being headed by new officers and board members recently appointed. Incorporated in 2016, the ACLD Foundation is a 501(c) (3) organization created to support and raise funds for the exclusive benefit of Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. Alan Spiegel of Dix Hills is the Foundation’s first president. “The establishment of the Foundation will allow a greater focus on raising money and securing new support to help ACLD,” said Alan Spiegel, President of the ACLD Foundation. “It also will allow the ACLD Board of Trustees to focus primarily on operational issues for the organization, and I’m proud and honored to serve as the Foundation’s

The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of more than 335 NYSHFA/ NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit
artwork. Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving
into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.” The 2017 “Art from the Heart” calendar can be purchased for $12 by visiting www.thefqc. org and www.nyshfa.org. Charitable Donations
Calling it, “among the most important charitable donations we make in the course of a year,” Ed Blumenfeld, president of BDG, is joined by his family and colleagues as he presents a check for over $21,000 to Beth Delli-
Pizzi of the Long Island Military Family Readiness Group which assists the families of those deployed on active duty and those G.I.’s recently returned. Based at the Farmingdale armory of the Fighting 69th, the Readiness Group
has become an important means of assisting military families that face a variety of issues. BDG challenged its employees to donate dollars and then applied a significant multiple to match those funds in making the contribution.
Tiny Toys Delivery The holiday spirit is alive with students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, who have found numerous ways to spread cheer and good will. Students have been donating small items for the Tiny Toys Giving Tree, created in honor of a former sixth-grade teacher. The children bring in small toys such as cars, stuffed animals and travel size games, which get delivered to St. Charles Hospice Center for children who are visiting family members there. The giving tree was created five years ago in honor of Renee McDonald,
an East Lake teacher who lost her battle with brain cancer and had two young boys at the time. Sixthgrade teacher Kari Szabo runs the collection drive and said children donate several hundred toys each year. The Student Council organized a toy drive to benefit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which supports sick and underprivileged children. Students were asked to donate new, unwrapped toys. This year’s motto was “Give a Toy and Spread Joy.” Students Against Destructive Decisions took part in Postcards
for Patients through the Postcard Pick-Me-Up Program. Members of the SADD club wrote more than 400 letters to children and adults who are in the hospital during the holiday season. The postcards included pictures, poems and well wishes. “I am so proud of our teachers and students for their generosity, kindness, and compassion,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski. “These programs not only make a difference in the community, but also build important values in our students.”

and finance, explained that the goal of the visit was to discuss possible and emerging careers in virtual reality and 3-D printing and to demonstrate products, which already exist on the market. During the meeting the students had the

Toy Drive a Success Children’s Foundation, which assists sick and underprivileged children. The three-week toy drive is led by John Coyne’s fifthgrade class. Every day his “elves” go throughout the school and gather up the donations. More than 10,000 toys have been
collected at Birch Lane since the drive began 12 years ago. Donations from community members are also accepted. “It’s nice that we do this so the kids can have a happy holiday,” said fifthgrader Kellie Mulchinski.
