More than 30 Seaford Middle School students showcased their musical abilities at the annual Seaford’s Got Talent competition on Dec. 5, an evening that featured plenty of memorable performances. There were 22 individual and group acts including singing, dancing and instrumental music selections. Students spent several

The 2019 holiday season is upon us and Nassau County is offering a wide range of festive and affordable activities throughout County Parks, Museums and other facilities including an 1860s-style Thanksgiving, personalized letters from Santa, gingerbread cookie workshops, a holiday celebration for military families, and free performances by a symphony orchestra, to name a few. The County’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums manages more than 70 parks, preserves, museums, historic properties, and athletic facilities spanning 6,000 acres. While parks fill with residents, sports leagues, concert goers and campers during warmer weather, the County has organized a variety of activities to entertain residents of all ages throughout the holiday and winter season. “Continuing to enhance our Parks and expand their fun and unique seasonal programs is key to making Nassau a better place for people to live, work and play,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “I want to encourage families to celebrate the season right here in Nassau County and take advantage of all the holiday happenings and winter activities we have to offer.” Outlined below is the lineup of upcoming holiday and winter season activities and entertainment happening throughout County parks and Museums. Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Seaford Middle School celebrated Tech Week from Dec. 2-6 and teachers used the opportunity to showcase many different ways to integrate technology into the curriculum. Seventh grade math teachers Lisa Jones and Thomas Hansen created a Breakout EDU game that simulated an escape room. Students followed the instructions that were displayed on the SmartBoard to begin their quest. They worked with partners to complete packets that required them to solve equations and simplify expressions, ultimately revealing a three-digit code. Once everyone had the code,
which was the room number they had to call to get the next clue, everyone in the class worked together. Their ultimate goal was to find the keys to open two locked boxes. English language arts teacher Jennifer McCrystal engaged her students in content using Plickers. Each student received a card with a unique, foursided design. As she put multiple choice review questions up on the SmartBoard, students held up their cards and turned them so the side corresponding to what they believed was the right answer was on top. Ms. McCrystal then used her phone to scan the room and see who answered
correctly. In eighth grade social studies classes with Michael Milano, students used Nearpod, a presentation and assessment tool. Use of interactive is possible because of the district’s Personalized Digital Learning Initiative, which provides secondary students with their own laptops for use both in school and at home. Assistant Principal Lisa Dunn explained that that purpose of Tech Week was to foster collaboration among the staff about instructional technology. Teachers were invited into their colleagues classroom to see lessons using different digital resources and tools.
