Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

One Of A Kind By: Jamie Lynn Ryan He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldﬁsh quite like you.

Members of Venturing Crew 130 continued the tradition of volunteering at the Oceanside Interfaith Thanksgiving Day Meal at Oceanside High School on Thanksgiving Day. While many were at home watching the parade, sipping hot cocoa

and get the turkey ready, members of Crew 130 spent the day helping others. Each year, the Oceanside Interfaith Network hosts a Thanksgiving feast for those less fortunate in our community. Crew 130 members, along with Scouts from the

area, help set-up, serve a five-course meal and cleanup for hundreds of people. The youth also provide a smile, a laugh and time to talk with the Thanksgiving Day guest. For more information on Crew 130, please visit on Facebook, beascout.org.

Board Okays Exemption In recognition of the bravery and sacrifices made by veterans in the community, the Seaford Board of Education has adopted a basic state tax exemption law that will lower the tax bills of eligible veterans and “Gold Star” parents - those whose children were killed in combat. The board voted unanimously at its December 4th meeting in favor of reducing the property assessments of the school portion of tax bills for the nearly 600 eligible veterans who reside in the district. Under the law, property assessments will be reduced by 15 percent for veterans who served during a war, another 10 percent for those who served in combat zones and further reduced for

those with service-related disabilities. Gold Star parents qualify for a 15 percent or 25 percent exemption. Seaford has 326 veterans who served during a war, 223 who served in combat zones, 36 who have service-related disabilities and one Gold Star parent. The reductions come at no cost to the school district; the difference in revenue will be made up by nonveteran residents whose tax bills will increase by an average of $46.54, according to Assistant Superintendent for Business Elisa Pellati. Board President Bruce Kahn said, “While we realize that any tax increase is difficult for residents in a tough economy, this is a small price to pay for the sacrifices of our service men and women; our

neighbors who have given so much to protect our country for our families.” The school board voted on four separate resolutions that address the exemptions. The first affects qualified veterans who are homeowners, the second impacts those who own condominiums or co-ops, a third permits qualified recipients to transfer the exemption upon the sale of his home if another is purchased within the district and the fourth extends eligible property tax exemptions to Gold Star parents. The district held a public hearing on November 2th0 as required by law. The exemptions are expected to be applied to the 2015 -2016 tax bills.
