Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that Town’s Group Activities Program (GAP), open to residents age 5 and over with developmental disabilities, is going fully virtual beginning in January. The GAP program, which is administered through the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services, provides a unique socialrecreational experience for developmentallydisabled children and adults. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to offer this wonderful program, which consists of game nights, entertainment nights, and even virtual field trips,” stated Supervisor Saladino. “These experiences provide a safe means of

interaction and offer both children and adults a wonderful opportunity.” The program runs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and is open to Town of Oyster Bay

Seaford High School students enthusiastically displayed their “Seaford Pride” from Nov. 9-13 for the annual spirit week celebration. From the freshmen to the seniors, there was lots of participation in the themed dress-up days. Typically a competition among the four grades, this year the juniors teamed up with the sophomores, and the seniors with the freshmen. Students could earn points for their teams by dressing up for the theme days which included angels and devils, bikers

and surfers, and heroes and villains. The week culminated with Seaford Pride day, as 9th and 12th graders wore green, and 10th and 11th graders came clad in white. It also featured a morning and an afternoon trivia contest, held in the auditorium and streamed via Zoom so all students could watch. Teachers Stephanie Bartkus, Chris Coniglio, Irwin Francus and Robert Maloney captained the student teams. The main hallway was the center of school spirit, with

a green and white balloon arch and streamers, as well as student artwork based on the daily themes. The theme days were selected by the student council in partnership with the class officers. Senior class President Colin Merrigan said that spirit week was fun and full of energy, and he enjoyed seeing everyone dress up for theme days. He added that the seniors were proud to team up with the freshmen and show the school’s newest students what it means to be a Seaford Viking.

“MAIL YOUR LETTERS TO SANTA” - Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced that the children of Nassau County will once again be able to send their holiday lists directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole via a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes at Nassau County Parks to December 18, 2020. To assure a reply, each letter must contain the child’s name and address, written legibly. There is no postage necessary for the

Santa letters. The “SantaGrams” will be sent before the holiday. Colorful red and green mailboxes will be accessible from 10am to 4pm daily. Seaford High School seniors Vincenzo Buffolino and Giana Cesario were recognized as this year’s recipients of the Nassau Zone Outstanding Student Award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Two students – one male and one female – were selected from every high school who best exemplify their understanding of the New York State learning standards for health and physical education. Kevin Witt, Seaford’s director of physical education, health and athletics, said his department’s staff selected the pair not only because they embody all the criteria for the award,

but because they bring a high level of enthusiasm to their classes and energize their classmates. Vincenzo and Giana were chosen because they exhibit physically active lifestyles both during and outside of school, value healthy choices, demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior including good character, citizenship and sportsmanship, show leadership, are positive influences on their peers and value lifelong learning. In addition to being active participants in their health and physical education classes, they also participate in Seaford athletics. Vincenzo is a member of the soccer and track teams, and Giana takes part in basketball and

track. Giana said she values physical education classes because she learns ways to incorporate fitness into her daily life. She also spoke highly of the district’s physical education and health teachers who go above and beyond to support the physical and mental well-being of their students. Vincenzo said that he wants to keep his body and his mind healthy, so he strives to gain knowledge on topics such as physical fitness, nutrition and stress relief. “It’s an honor, knowing that my teachers though that I deserved this award,” he said.

COREY TALLARINE OF TROOP 691 RECOGNIZED - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto recently recognized Corey Tallarine of Boy Scout Troop 691 in Seaford on the completion of his Eagle Scout Project. Corey raised private funds and constructed five American flag retirement boxes, which were donated to the Town of Oyster Bay and located at Town facilities and events. Corey’s project required hours of logistical planning and design. Supervisor Saladino thanked Corey for this patriotic initiative which allows for the proper disposal of American flags. This project was completed as part of Corey’s path to becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. Supervisor Saladino commended Corey for his hard work and dedication towards the goal of achieving this prestigious achievement, which only 6% of all Boy Scouts attain.
