She had some of her club members visit the Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools to assist students with coding activities. “They took to it pretty easily,” said Computer Club members Steven DelPozzo, Scott Wilson and Trevor Donohue. The trio helped students in Candice Kaplan’s fourth-grade class at Seaford Manor Elementary School and also demonstrated what type of coding they would be doing in high school, assuring them that it “really isn’t hard to do.” For some students in the class, it was their first time coding while others sailed easily through the coding activities on the website, which had students coding with their favorite movie characters, such as Disney’s Frozen and Star

Wars. Computer Club members presented and demonstrated a Fisher Price Code-A-Pillar toy to kindergartners at both elementary schools to help them learn the basics of coding. They also hosted a twohour “Girls Who Code” event in the high school computer lab, which was attended by local Girl Scouts, computer science alumni and current students. At Seaford Harbor Elementary School, fourth graders participated in a lunchtime Hour of Code led by parent and computer programmer Nancy Setzler. Students worked as a group on the Moana and Maui coding activity on the Code. org site and, with the assistance of her daughter, fifth-grader Jacqueline Bodycomb, Setzler used visuals to illustrate coding concepts, such as “looping” to repeat a command. Students also learned coding during their library periods. According to Thompsen, coding teaches critical thinking skills, which are essential to be college and career ready in the 21st century. “Introducing the Hour of Code to our youngest students in a fun and engaging way encourages them to develop their skills and perhaps even pursue a career in one of the fastest growing fields around the globe,” she said.

My Grownup Christmas List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.
Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on
their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done.

We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about.

Access Road a Reality
COURT OF HONOR - Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone recently attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony for Nicolas Gerard Placa of Boy Scout Troop 691, Seaford/Massapequa Theodore Roosevelt Council, which was held at the Maria Regina Church in Seaford. Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. Councilman Macagnone was joined by Nicolas’ family in presenting Nicolas with a citation in recognition of his hard work.

The Seaford Lions Club again locally sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest that encourages children ages 11 to 13 to creatively express what peace means
to them. This year’s contest theme was “A Celebration of Peace.” Winners were chosen from Seaford Middle School and St. William the Abbot School. Each
winner was awarded a Certificate and prize. First place winners move on for levels of judging with the International prize winner receiving $5,000.
Giving a green light to alleviate a nearly 30 year-old traffic problem at Seaford Harbor Elementary School, the Board of Education unanimously voted to award the construction of an access road to Mt. Olympos Restoration, Inc. of Elmont for $633,000. Construction for the 310foot roadway is expected to break ground in April and will be completed in about two months. “The entire school board and administration are excited that after 53 years of talk of a Harbor road, that we are finally going to make this muchneeded emergency access road a reality,” said Board President Bruce Kahn. “I wish to thank all our community members and local officials whom over the years have not given up hope on this project.” The 53-year-old school currently has one roadway as a means of ingress and egress, which has
caused mounting concern by residents as traffic conditions, especially during morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up times, intensified over the years. The lack of an alternate access route in case of emergency has also been a longtime source of apprehension. After swelling pressure from the Harbor community in recent years, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano made an agreement with district officials to provide the $650,000 needed for the project since it will be constructed on countyowned land running from Bayview Street just east of the school to Cedar Street, which turns into Iona Street. After that agreement in 2014, the project had to meet state and county building requirements before it could go out to bid. After its completion, the road is expected to be gated at both ends, but would be
opened to alleviate traffic and provide an emergency exit when necessary. “As someone who has been part of this district for almost as long as the Seaford Harbor School has been in existence, I am beyond words in describing the feeling of finally getting the wheels moving on this roadway,” said Superintendent Brian Conboy. “We have the persistence and perseverance of many community members to thank, namely, Ms. Deanine Nagengast, Ms. Stacie Stark, Ms. Rita Matalone, Ms. Dame Cascone and Ms. Melanie Schnair, former Harbor School Principal Donna DeLucia-Troisi, the Harbor School administration and PTA, and the Board of Education. We also greatly appreciate the efforts of Mr. Ed Mangano and his staff, as well as our local legislators for bringing this long-awaited project to fruition.”

This past weekend, over 650 Angela’s House children, their siblings and their parents joined together to usher in the 2016 holiday season. With the continued support from Arthur Krantz, owner of PRC Industries and founder of We Care for Kids, Inc. Foundation and John Guadagno and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 25, the Hauppauge union hall was transformed into a winter wonderland for the children and families of Angela’s House. Founder and Executive Director Bob Policastro said of the event, “It was an amazing weekend! We Care For Kids, Inc. was able to setup a fantasy holiday environment that fostered great joy and smiles for the medically fragile children of Angela’s House. We are blessed to have the support to make this possible.” Balloon Bouquets of Long Island decked out the
room helping to really set the tone of a festive party atmosphere and Parties by Ziggy provided non-stop entertainment, helping get the children out on the dance-floor and setting the bar high for the energy level in the room. The entertainment also included enthusiastic volunteers from Hauppauge’s Venturing Crew 872 who dressed up as some classic characters such as Mickey and Minnie and included some more modern characters such as Olaf from Frozen and Ryder from Paw Patrol. Incredible Ices, Incredible Ivan the magician and some really talented face painters added so much to the event, as did performances from local kick-line groups and dance groups like the Arrowettes from Sachem and the Patchogue Medford Raiderettes. The children and their parents we captivated by the presentation and
special guests that Long Island’s own Nature Nick provided, including an armadillo, monkey, owl and even a kangaroo! Each of the children and their siblings had an opportunity to receive a gift, and thanks to Mr. Krantz and his unending generosity, each family went home with a car-full of goodies, to bring them some extra cheer during the holiday season. This year marked the seventh year that this beautiful and special event is held. The children, who had nonstop smiles on their faces, and their families not only enjoyed themselves, but were able to connect with other Angela’s House families that they otherwise had never met. For a few hours, the stresses of caring for a medically fragile child were backseat to creating lasting memories and enjoying the holiday season.

Robin Shum, a member of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, was recently selected by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) to receive one of eight $500 scholarships offered to Girl Scouts nationwide. GSUSA’s “Girl Scout Challenge” asked girls throughout the country to submit ways in which they are building a better world for the chance to win. Robin was selected for her Girl Scout Gold Award project entitled, “Cosmetic Awareness.” As part of the project Robin researched the toxins and carcinogens found in cosmetics and other products such as lotions and body wash. “Robin earned this
cosmetics a day. She then developed a presentation based on her findings to raise awareness about which ingredients in cosmetics to avoid. She presented at her local middle school, high school and local synagogue where people of mixed ages learned how to read labels to lead healthier lives. Robin also created a website so people can get information on this topic. The GSUSA”s “Girl Scout Challenge” helps to showcase the ways in which Girl Scouts across the country are making positive impacts on the world. The contest aims to not only congratulate the great work being done, but also inspire others to do the same. The contest is open all current Girl Scouts and alumnae of the past five years. The applicants are asked to submit a “selfie” and explain how they are building a better world. A applicant is chosen to receive a $500 scholarship sponsored by Metlife Foundation each week beginning November 8th until December 27th.
