When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born. It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas. While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.

A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.” It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical. A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming

or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.” The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks. In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas flow forth. December’s Charity of the Month is:

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options Mental Health Residential Programs provide supportive housing opportunities for Long Island residents recovering from serious mental illness under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction.

Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives. Their agency operates a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. This thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and household cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness. Ensuring Hearty Meals For All Seaford High School’s annual food drive will benefit countless people this Thanksgiving following a combined effort by the student council and the community. In the past, students at the high school, middle school and elementary school would bring in donations, and the food would be sorted to help local families. This year, it expanded to involve the entire Seaford community, as students left empty paper bags with fliers on doorsteps. On November 18th, they drove around town and collected any PROMOTING THE ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE - Fifth-grade student council filled paper bags that members got the word out to their peers at Seaford Harbor Elementary School about people left out. Teacher Tania Cintorino, who advises student council with Shari Raduazzo, said they decided to implement a strategy similar to the holiday toy drive. “That’s been so successful in the past, so we tried it with the food drive,” she said. “Not everyone in the community has a student in the school, but are looking for ways to help others.” The Monday before Thanksgiving, student council members were busy sorting donations that filled their office. In addition to providing full meals for 15 families, they will donate leftover items to the food pantries at St. William the Abbot Church and Maria Regina Church, and possibly other hunger relief organizations.

“I’ve never seen this much food in my life,” said Student Council President Chris Schneider. “It makes me love Seaford even more because I see how willing we are to give to our neighbors.” Student council members at the middle school helped out by attaching the donation fliers to the bags. At Seaford Harbor Elementary School, student leaders made posters to raise awareness about the food drive. To ensure all needs were met, each grade was assigned an item, such as gravy, cranberry sauce or stuffing. Fifth-grader Matthew Kind, vice president of the student council, said, “It makes me feel good inside that I’m helping people.”
