In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

You can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. They discussed the college application and selection process including the importance of campus visits, choosing a major and getting involved in clubs and activities.
Students attending the session included seniors, who are presently weighing their college options, and ninth graders, who learned how the next four years will ultimately impact their post-high school plans. “It’s wonderful for students to hear from people who have been in their shoes not long ago,” Ms. Scordo said. “It’s a great insight into what college life looks like.”

Taking Math To The Next Level

Elementary students in the Seaford School District are experiencing math in a way they never have before with the introduction of Math Olympiads. The enrichment opportunity allows fourth and fifth graders to test their mathematical knowledge and reasoning skills in a series of challenging problems. After weeks of preparation, students took part in their first competition on Nov. 12 at Seaford Manor Elementary School and Nov. 13 at Seaford Harbor Elementary School. Children had 30 minutes to solve the five problems and it was up to them how to best allocate their time. Math specialist John Berry
said the format typically includes one addition or subtraction equation and four word problems that cover a variety of math concepts. Students, such as fourth grader Roran Cassidy and fifth grader Erica Simone, said they joined Math Olympiads because the want to tackle difficult problems. Emma Clancy, a fifth grader, noted that she has started to learn math concepts that haven’t yet been introduced in class. “I like to solve problems and I like to challenge myself with harder questions,” fifth grader Annie Donohue said. Added fifth grader Katharyn Malone, “It helps me grow as a mathematician. You can
never stop learning. There’s always new concepts and new ways to do them.” Students noted that while the competition is an individual event, it is important to work together and help each other out during the practice rounds so they can learn from each other. Mr. Berry explained that students aren’t competing against each other, but rather are striving for a personal best score each time. “I feel proud of myself,” fourth grader Christo Perlegis said. “I got a chance to show my math skills and I think I’m going to do better the next time because I got a feel of what Math Olympiad is all about.”
Kindergartners Get A Learning Check Up They may have only started school a few months ago, but kindergartners at Seaford Harbor Elementary School have already become doctors. Youngsters in Marisa Cirillo’s class recently donned gloves, masks, scrub hats and even photo ID badges while performing literacy and math “operations” in their classroom.
At one station, children picked up cards with numbers and had to count that out in paper hearts to determine how many patients’ charts had been checked. Another center featured cutouts of the human body with numbers zero through six in both numerical form and spelled out. When students made a match, their indicator would light up.
Over at the literacy station, students used plastic tweezers to pick though cotton balls and find letters. From there, they had to look at pictures and identify which one represented a word that started with that letter. Ms. Cirillo said that the activity was a fun way to review skills the students have been learning since September.

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Needed
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity-men as well as women-to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reflect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline. The three-day training program will take place
on consecutive Tuesdays— January 14, 21 and 28, from 10am to 1 pm at Adelphi University in Garden City. This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community. “It is so important for people who call our hotline to speak with someone
who has been there,’” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, volunteer and hotline coordinator.
