The Long Island Museum announces that it will close for the months of January and February, 2014. Next year, 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the Long Island Museum’s founding and big changes are on the horizon. After a brief winter hiatus, the museum will reopen on March 1 with three new exhibitions: Colors of Long Island,

the annual student art exhibition featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. The exhibit will be on display in the Visitors Center from March 1st through April 27th, 2014 Moving to the Art Museum, the main gallery will feature Brothers in Art: the Changing Face of American Painting, which
includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by William Sidney Mount and his brother Shepard Alonzo Mount. This show runs from March 1st through May 4th, 2014. Finally, the newly named Victoria Costigan gallery will feature Jackson Pollock’s Prints: Works from the Pollock-Krasner House. Although best
known for his poured, abstract paintings, Pollock also created many works in print media that are not as widely known. This exhibition, curated by Director of the PollockKrasner House, Helen Harrison, contains 12 such prints and will be on display from March 1st through June 8th, 2014. Stuff-A-Boat Donation Sea Tow is proud to announce the “Stuff-ABoat” donation drive for the 2013 holiday season. Sponsored nationally by Sea Tow Services International, the nation’s leading marine assistance service provider, and hosted by Sea Tow operators across the country, the campaign’s goal is to provide those less fortunate in local communities with some badly needed assistance and cheer during the 2013 holiday season. The Southold “Stuff A Boat” donation drive will take place through December 14th. Sea Tow Services International, located at 700 Hummel Avenue in Southold, will accept donations Monday - Friday (12/9 - 12/13) from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday (12/14) from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. during that period. The North Fork Animal Welfare League (NFAWL) and Community Action of Southold Town (CAST) will benefit from “Stuff-a-Boat” donors’ generosity in this area. Donations for families and pets will be accepted;
items may include nonperishable food, as well as lightly used blankets, household supplies (detergent, towels, etc.) and even gift certificates to local supermarkets or pet stores. Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in
the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,
completely decked out in lights, ornaments, ribbons and bows, with piles of perfectly wrapped presents nestled underneath. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

Collecting Coupons Seaford Manor Elementary School collected nearly 15,000 coupons to assist in the cost of living for military troops and their families who are stationed domestically and overseas. “We had a tremendous turnout,” said art teacher Mariana Beach who coordinated the effort with teacher Candice Kaplan.
“It is truly heartwarming to see our students support our troops in this way and make a positive impact on those who serve our country.” The coupons were counted with the assistance of Kaplan’s fourth-grade class and then categorized and sent to Supportourtroops. org, which distributes
them to the military. The organization accepts coupons that are expired up to 90 days. As a reward, the class that collected the most coupons received coupons to Friendly’s Restaurant for a free ice cream dessert. Congratulations to Christopher Feiler’s fifthgrade class which collected 2,600 coupons.

The impact of Rachel’s Challenge took hold in the Seaford School District as middle and high school students listened to the powerful story of Rachel Joy Scott, the first student shot in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, and took steps to carry out her lessons of compassion towards others. Rachel was an ambassador of kindness who stuck up for classmates who were mistreated and befriended those who seemed lonely or awkward. Believing she would make an impact on the world yet die at an early age, Rachel kept journals depicting her acts of kindness that broke down barriers and in some cases, saved lives. In a two-page essay she authored just six weeks before she died, she challenged others to start a chain reaction of kindness. That essay is the basis of Rachel’s Challenge, a worldwide movement in which Rachel’s family and friends share her story and challenge others to start their own chain reactions of kindness. Arranged by Seaford Middle School Social Worker Nancy Fitzgerald as part of the district’s ongoing anti-bullying initiatives, the presentation also included a parent assembly at night to foster open conversations at home. Led by Rachel’s family friend Daryn Jackson, the assemblies showcased a video of Rachel’s life and those who were affected by her acts of kindness. Then Daryn outlined five challenges based on Rachel’s writings to help students understand each other and treat each other better. “Examine your own hearts” and “look for the best in others,” she said. “Dream big and write down your plans
and goals to make them real.” “Choose positive influences for your life because the choices you make today and the people you surround yourself with will be with you for the rest of your life” she continued. Asking students to close their eyes and think of the people they care about, she challenged them to “speak with kindness”… and “start your own chain of kindness beginning with the people in your life that mean the most to you.” Seaford students left the assembly amazed by its power
and invigorated to carry out Rachel’s chain of kindness in their daily lives. “I feel inspired,” said seventh-grader Michael Catalanotti. “We should all live our lives in Rachel’s image.” Classmate Samantha Findeisen said the assembly reminded her of the friends who helped her during a difficult time and that she is determined to help classmates who may seem alone or need a friend. Tommy Beck, also in seventh grade, agreed, “If I see someone being bullied I would try to stop it.”

Chain Reaction Of Kindness Michael, Samantha and Tommy then joined about 150 middle and high school students for a training session called “Friends of Rachel Club” that offered strategies on ways to carry out Rachel’s Challenge throughout the school year. Students were asked to sit at round tables in groups of six with students they didn’t know and then participate in an ice-breaking activity that invited students to the floor to express their feelings or what was on their minds. Clearly moved by the assembly, students took the floor one by one without much hesitation. Many students thanked their classmates and the Seaford community for supporting and embracing them, despite their differences such as sexual preference or race. They thanked teachers for being helpful and caring, citing that there is always someone at school that students can talk to. And they thanked others who made a difference in the lives of students who were suffering through a rough time. The activity awakened students to what their classmates were dealing with and drew them closer. It also gave them the determination to bring that feeling to everyone else on campus. The students explored what they would like to change, such as eliminating cliques and encouraging acceptance. They also learned strategies that included how to give a pep talk to those who are need one, how to put yourself in a situation to stick up for someone and how to deflect attention away from someone who is in a threatening situation and bringing them to a safe place. SPECIAL CAMPING TRIP - Seaford’s Troop 239 enjoyed a special camping trip recently. The troop visited Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for Turkey In The Woods. The boys prepare a whole Thanksgiving dinner in the woods, which they and their families enjoyed. The boys also spent some time on rank advancement tasks. In addition, they had a great hike down to the LI Sound.

LECTURE SERIES - David Nemiroff, vice president of care transitions at NuHealth, participated in the Adelphi University’s lecture series on Friday, November 8th. The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China. The two-week tour will include performances and visits to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Yangshuo, Guilin and Shanghai. The tour will also explore major attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Terracotta Warrior Museum, and the Giant Panda Research Base. An
optional, additional week of touring in Hawaii will be offered. MYO ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the years with concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Australia and New Zealand, Spain, Italy, and Greece. John McNeur, founder and former Executive Director of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, said, “This has proven to be a life-changing experience for so many young people. Beyond the incredible
experience of spreading goodwill through their music, the musicians have had so many opportunities to interact with people of very different cultures. Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports (NAPSI)—The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same
time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports
provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report.
According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax,
Experian and TransUnion, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers

The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Forty-Seven (347) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the approximately 900 students in NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than one third of the total number of students selected for All State. Students will gather to rehearse and perform in Rochester as NYSSMA celebrates its 81st year of advocating for quality music education in schools throughout New York State. This Conference will mark the sixteenth (16th) in a row to be held at the Rochester Convention Center, and will feature Nancy Ditmer, president of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as keynote speaker. ``We are very excited about returning to Rochester – it’s like a second home for NYSSMA,” said president Marc E. Greene. ``More than one thousand music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals. Among the highlights of our conference, however, are the many wonderful performances by our All State students.” The conference will be held from December 5th – December 8th and feature Saturday evening performances
