The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $12,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Student Assistance Programs - Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) and Teen Intervene. Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of these evidence based-programs designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. Teen Intervene, a psychoeducation intervention model, addresses teens experiencing mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use. “We are so grateful to The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for supporting these

I would like to br ing some much ne eded attention to our local animal shelters. This past summer, I decided to volunteer at the Babylon Animal Shelter. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. Over the holiday, get into bed early to give yourself enough time to wind down after your day and to fall asleep faster and more soundly. Also, a recent sleep study of teenagers found that greater variability in dayto-day sleep habits was associated with higher calories consumed throughout the day. Seaford Manor Elementary School fourth graders in Carol Riedener’s class connected through books and technology with students from around the world, and those in their own backyard, when they participated in the 2015 Global Read Aloud. During their library period with teacherlibrarian Claire Mitchell, the students joined thousands in developing thoughtful interpretations of Amy Krause Rosenthal’s children’s books. They discussed and shared ideas using Padlet, an online tool that provides a digital canvas where users can create collaborative

projects using a host of options, such as dragging in videos, recording interviews, writing their own text posts or uploading documents. As a culminating event, the students took a virtual field trip through “Field Trip Zoom,” provided by Nassau BOCES videoconferencing service, to Christine Hoehn’s fourth-grade class at Lockhart Elementary School in Massapequa. There, teacher-librarian Tara Gonzalez worked with students on their interpretations on Padlet during library time and also helped coordinate the virtual field trip so her students could share

and exchange what they learned with Manor students. The children “loved” having a virtual visit with their neighbors in Massapequa and sharing what they learned through the author study,” Mitchell said. “The students used a lot of inferencing, comprehension and critical-thinking skills to make connections about the global messages in the books, and they were proud to share their work with students from another school. They were also intrigued to discover that their interpretations of the books were similar to those of their neighbors.”

Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own

name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,
