Autism FYI www.autismfyi.org
Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certified”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism. Please read on for detailed information about their training opportunities available! Engaging with someone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult for people unless they have at least a baseline knowledge of the disorder. Everyday Interactions with the Autism Spectrum Population is a comprehensive course for anyone and everyone who is working, volunteering, attending school, shopping or just out and about in the community and need to help recognize behaviors associated with ASD and safely engage for the good of all involved. Autism FYI’s workshops provide professionals, parents and community members the information needed to significantly support people on the autism spectrum in school, at work and in the community. They created this training course, which is available in person or online to anyone. In this course, you will learn:
ASD • Major developmental differences of ASD vs. neurotypical persons • To identify e s c a l a t i n g behavior and how to best respond • Communication difficulties and how to overcome them • How does Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD effect the behavior of a person with ASD) • How to engage a person effectively and appropriately you suspect has ASD • How to help coach/mentor a person with ASD on your team and engage them more effectively • How to engage a person with ASD who comes into your store, bank, daycare, community program etc. • How people with ASD make wonderful employees and how to hire and integrate them as part of your team • De-escalation techniques and behaviors to avoid • Effective communication techniques to help keep their anxiety level down • Strategies to help them cope with any situation Their trainings also have someone with ASD attending for role playing scenarios and interaction. Upon completion of the course, you will be more confident in identifying ASD behaviors, understanding effective engagement and communication techniques, and successfully interacting with someone with ASD. As part of a continued emphasis on social and emotional learning in the Seaford School District, the high school welcomed motivational speaker Joshua Rivedal on Nov. 18. He spoke to students during a pair of morning presentations followed by a smaller meet-and-greet with student leaders. Mr. Rivedal imparted on students the importance of taking care of their own mental health by having a strong support system, surrounding themselves with positive individuals and making time for the activities they enjoy. In sharing his story as an aspiring actor whose path was disrupted by several life events, he aimed to inspire students to fight through challenges and take control of their lives. “He has some really great coping strategies and a positive outlook,” Assistant Principal Jennifer Bisulca

said. “We thought it would be a good message for students to hear, especially now with the disruptions of the pandemic.” Mr. Rivedal told students that it’s OK to be “healthy selfish.” It’s good to be there for friends and family, he explained, but everyone must also devote some time for self-care. “You can’t fill up other people’s cups if yours is empty,” he said. At the end of the presentation, he provided resources that students can access if they or a friend need help. Mr. Rivedal’s visit builds on the district’s mission to provide students with a high level of support for their social and emotional needs. His message complemented Seaford’s new partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and work with Dr. Marc Brackett, who visited the district earlier this year.

Senior Alexandra Leggio said the presentation was very engaging and she left with knowledge that will stick with her for a long time, particularly the “I See You” statements. “When he told us how to approach a situation of a student in need, it was really helpful, so we don’t say something the wrong way, or that we make sure we express to them that we care,” she said. “It was great that he said that everyone was the CEO of their own life,” added junior Joseph Saurman. “It really stood out to me because it made me realize how much control we have over our own lives. We can always make the best of it.”
Town Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks Now Open Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announced that the Town’s outdoor ice skating rinks at Marjorie R. Post and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks have officially opened for the season. “Ice skating is a fun activity for residents of all ages to enjoy, and the Town’s outdoor ice rinks provide the perfect
setting to relax, unwind, and take in the wonderful winter atmosphere,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Our outdoor ice rink facilities are the perfect antidote to combating cabin fever during the winter months, and are the ideal way to help make coping with the cold fun and enjoyable!” Public Skating Sessions are hosted at both outdoor rinks on Fridays from
4pm-6pm and 7pm-9pm, Saturdays from 1pm3pm, 4pm-6pm, and 7pm9pm, and Sundays from 1pm-3pm and 4pm-6pm. During Holiday Breaks, a special schedule takes effect, which is available on oysterbaytown.com.
