It may not have drawn the three million people that venture to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City each year, but the balloon parade at Seaford Manor Elementary School still generated a lot of interest and excitement. Fifth graders spent about a month designing and building their balloon floats, which culminated with a parade through the halls on Nov. 22. After reading “Balloons Over Broadway” and exploring the evolution of balloons in the world renowned parade, students began coming up with their own ideas.

Each student thought of a theme for his or her float. Then, it was time to design and decide what materials would be needed. After bringing in supplies from home, fifth graders spent a little time each day constructing. Balloons were provided by their teachers and were added last to ensure they would be inflated for the parade. On the morning before Thanksgiving, a few hundred students in grades K-4 lined the hallways and cheered as the fifth graders proudly marched with their balloon floats. Themes included books, holidays, movies, sports and more.

“They were very creative in their designs,” fifth grade teacher Meghan Hunt said. “They loved showing their work with their peers throughout the school.” Ms. Hunt said that the project helped students learn by creating. They put their problem-solving skills to the test as they turned their drawings in a physical product, which required a lot of trial and error. The young builders showed patience, flexibility and a willingness to help others throughout the process, Ms. Hunt explained.

Seaford Writer Inks First Published Work

Creative Balloon Floats Dazzle

An extra credit assignment for English class turned into the first published piece for Seaford High School junior Emily Scimeca. She submitted her fictional short story, “The Struggles of Life,” to Teen Ink and it was published on the magazine’s website. Emily’s story tells the tale of a girl who overcomes bullying and emotional struggles to become a successful basketball player. Emily said she was ecstatic when she received an email that her story would be published. “I feel very proud of myself,” she said. “It’s rewarding that what I put onto the page can mean a lot to others.”

Fishing For New Clubs, Seaford High Finds A Winner

Seaford High School’s new fishing club is giving students an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and participate in an activity that is very popular in an area that borders an ocean and is filled with ponds, lakes and streams. The new club, advised by band teacher Dr. Anthony Romeo, had two fishing trips in the fall. The first venture was to Twin Lakes Preserve in Wantagh, with 15 students attending. In addition to

fishing, there was also an educational presentation by representatives from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. They taught students about fishing laws and requirements, and discussed the ecology of local freshwater lakes. Sophomore Denys Zagrebin caught the first fish on the trip. The second trip was in partnership with science teacher John Posillico’s

marine biology class. More than 40 students boarded the Yankee III fishing boat out of Captree State Park. Students caught fluke and sand sharks during the catch-and-release excursion, that also included an ecological education component. Dr. Romeo said that the fishing club launched this year, following strong interest from students and approval from the board of education. The club has 38 members and officers

include President Joanna Bello, Vice President Tate Gatto, Secretary Victoria Stebner and Treasurer Ava Caruso. Members include a mix of novice and experienced fishers. Trips will be held in the spring, summer and fall, while winter activities will include environmental lessons and gear-making sessions. Dr. Romeo said that over the next few months while the weather is cold, students will learn how to

make their own lures, rigs, weights and fishing rods, with support from guest speakers. Dr. Romeo, a certified DEC instructor, said the club provides a way for students to learn about the environment while enjoying a peaceful recreational activity. Joanna, who has been fishing since she was in elementary school, said it is a good way to introduce new students to the hobby. “There’s a lot that comes

with fishing,” she said. “We help each other out.” Denys picked up fishing a few years ago when his family moved to Seaford from Brooklyn and he was closer to the ocean. The trip to Twin Lakes was his first freshwater fishing experience. “It’s a great time,” said Denys, who got a yellow perch for his first catch. “I got to catch a bunch of fish and talk to people about fishing.”

Brick by brick, third graders at Seaford Manor Elementary School will build their understanding of engineering. Over the next several months, students will be immersed in Lego engineering activities, with

each introducing them to numerous scientific principles. The first group of students gathered outside with a few buckets of Legos and several buckets of water. Their task was to create boats that

could float. Students drew up designs in advance, then came out to build and test. If a design failed, they could go back and try again. Assistant Principal Rich Schwartz explained that the boat project, in addition

to teaching students about the engineering design process, focused on concepts such as buoyancy, density and displacement. Lego engineering activities also help them become creative problem solvers as well as

Whether they were creating a soda volcano or finding out the best way to clean up oil, students at Seaford Middle School enjoyed learning about their world for the annual science fair. They presented their results afterschool on Nov. 29, with science teachers Kevin Mullany and Roseann

Zeblisky serving as judges. The science fair, open to students in grades 6-8, allows students to explore any concept through an experiment that follows the scientific method. They could work individually or in teams for their athome projects. Students could showcase their

observations and results on a posterboard or with a digital presentation. “Every year, they surprise me,” Ms. Zeblisky said about the wide variety of topics that students explored. “Every year, they come up with different ideas, or different twists on an idea. There are no two projects

in high school research classes. Ms. Zeblisky and Mr. Mullany devoted a day of class earlier this year to the scientific method as a way of promoting the fair, and it led to an increase in participation this year. Eighth grader Christo Perlegis, a two-time participant in the science

fair, likes conducting an experiment, but he also enjoys presentation day where he can walk around the room, see the other projects and talk to his peers about their findings. “You learn something new every time,” Christo said. “All brains come together at this event.”
