The Seaford Public Library Board of Trustees has selected John M. Scaparro to fill the open position on the Library Board vacated by the recent resignation of Patricia Coughlin. Mr. Scaparro was sworn in at the November 18, 2019 Board Meeting and his term will run until April 22, 2020. Board President Peter J. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org
John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

Accolades For Her Writing
Seaford High School freshman Elizabeth Wingert can now call herself an award-winning writer. She earned first place in Long Island Literacy Arts’ third annual children’s prose contest. Elizabeth entered her work in the “Let’s Celebrate” category. The approximately 100-word piece, written at the end of her summer break, was about celebrating life and appreciating all that it has
to offer, she explained. It was the first writing contest she ever entered and was awarded a certificate during a ceremony at the Farmingdale Public Library, where she also read her piece aloud. Aspiring to become a published author, Elizabeth said she has written everything from poems to novels. She filled a 250-page sketchbook and even had to tape in more pages with a novel she

Seaford Middle School’s advisory program, Advice and Support for Kids, provides students with opportunities to discuss topics beyond the academic curriculum in small-group settings while participating in activities that bring the school community together. Every Friday, the schedule is adjusted to provide 20 minutes at the end of the day for ASK, during which every sixth, seventh and eighth grader participates. There are 18 groups per grade level, with no more than 10 students assigned to a teacher. The teachers serve as facilitators for the middle schoolers, who are able to talk about subjects and issues relevant to
their lives. There is also a different theme each month in ASK sessions. Students started off the year by focusing on goalsetting in September, then in June will revisit if and how they achieved their goals. October, which is designated as National Bullying Prevention Month, focused on kindness, while November’s theme was about being thankful. Students participate in a schoolwide project related to the theme. During October, they created a large tree in a second-floor hallway based upon the Sandy Hook Promise’s “Start With Hello” initiative. Students learned that they could make a positive difference
in the lives of their peers with a simple greeting or a smile. Each student and staff member wrote his or her name on a green paper handprint, which became the leaves of the tree. Teachers Lisa Jones and Laura Maciag, who coordinate the monthly themes and activities, said that the ASK program supports social and emotional learning as it provides an opportunity for student-centered discussion. Students are able to discuss their feelings in a safe and comfortable environment while feeling heard and valued. The themed projects help foster a positive and welcoming school climate.
Seaford Alumni Earn Recognition For Class Film Project
Four Seaford High School graduates were recently recognized at a local film festival for a movie they created as students during the 201617 school year. Dante Botti, Tanner Maple and Isaac Wong (Class of 2017) and John Theissen (Class of 2018), entered their project into the New York Long Island Film Festival, which was held at the Seaford Cinemas on Nov. 9. The film, “Duet,” earned four awards. It garnered recognition from the festival organizers including Best Screenplay – Feature and the Most With the Least award, as well as best film and best actor (Isaac Wong) in the audience awards bracket. “Duet” was a yearlong class project in the advanced-level Film 2 class with teacher Curtis Tripoli. All of the approximately 15 students in the class contributed either on
screen or behind the scenes, or both for the 58-minute flick. John was the film’s director, Isaac and Dante were the lead actors and Tanner was the producer. John noted the “great sense of teamwork” that took place in creating the film, and said it was an experience like no other in working with all of his classmates on a full-year collaborative project. He explained that previous projects in the Film 2 class were action movies or comedies, so the dramatic “Duet” was a change of pace. The premise of the movie is about a boy (played by Dante) who moves in with his uncle after suffering a family tragedy. A new kid in school, he struggles to find his place until his passion for music helps him make a new friend (portrayed by Isaac). Dante’s character plays the piano and

John said that the film “is a very human story,” which he believes is why it was well received at the festival. “I don’t plan on stopping at one film festival, I really plan on getting ‘Duet’ out there,” John said, adding that he was looking for a festival to enter the film into, and NYLIFF just happened to be in Seaford. He was initially nervous about screening to a wider audience but said he was very encouraged by the positive reaction. Much of the film was shot in the high school music room, with additional scenes recorded at students’ houses and local businesses. Mr. Tripoli said it was rewarding to see a group of students with diverse interests work together and create a successful project.
