in a required economics class for seniors, also earned recognition as a Gold Star Teacher for having 96% of his students pass the online test. Gilbert said he prepares his students by teaching them a range of financial topics, including budgeting, banking, investing, money management and insurance. “I am very proud of my students,” Gilbert said. “They worked hard and they learned skills that they can take out of high school and use throughout life.” All Blue Star Schools were recently honored at the W!SE Annual MoneyPower Conference for Financial Literacy in New York City, which was attended by Gilbert and other financial literacy teachers around the nation.

Her diverse athletic talent helped Seaford’s varsity volleyball team win its third consecutive county championship and in doing so earned her All-County recognition. In addition she has earned the leadership role of captain of the winter track team. “Emma is a model student athlete that has adhered to the highest standards in both the classroom and the playing field,” said Athletic Director Tom Condon. “And, she couldn’t be more humble about her success.” Emma said she selected SUNY Albany because its location will allow her family to come to her games. She also had good chemistry with the coach and the teammates that she met. “Everything about it fits my personality and I just meshed with the other girls on the team,” she said. Into The Black Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally

even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.
