The Master Class gave LIHSA students the opportunity to enhance their skills and put their abilities to the test. The teen dancers learned from professionals in one of the world’s premier modern dance companies. In their more than 30-year history, Pilobolus has performed more than 100 originally choreographed routines in more than 64 countries, and has been featured at the Academy Awards and on the Oprah Winfrey Show and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. “This was an outstanding opportunity for our students,” LIHSA Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth said of the class. “They enjoyed a one-to-one experience with an international dance troupe that introduced them to a new style of modern dance.”

I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.” For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo. Now, nearly two months later, he is still enjoying his reign of the fishbowl,

alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged. Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®. So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone. ‘Til then, Happy Holidays from Harry.

Set To Play Seaford High School senior and three-season athlete Shannon Duncan has signed a National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at Pace University in Pleasantville, New York. The Division II lacrosse team debuted last spring and will consist of

freshman and sophomore athletes in the 2015 season. Shannon said she found the university to be a “good fit” athletically and academically. “I like the idea of being part of a new team at a school that is building a brand new athletic

complex,” Shannon said. She was also impressed with the university’s business school, her intended course of study. Shannon has played the sport for nine years and will captain the varsity lacrosse team this spring. She has been a varsity level player since ninth grade when she was moved up to the team for the playoffs. She’s most proud, she said,

of the team’s ability to go the semi-finals every year. Shannon also plays with the Long Island Yellow Jackets, a traveling lacrosse club, and is a member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams. “Shannon is the complete student athlete,” said Coach Kurt Dankenbrink. “Pace is lucky to receive such a fine young lady and outstanding athlete.

She is determined to be successful. She’s a role model, she helps younger players; we’re proud of her.” “Shannon is a dedicated honor roll student athlete who is known for her work ethic, team play and

Common Core Celebration At first glance, it was an adorable presentation as Seaford Harbor Elementary School’s more than 100 kindergartners, dressed as Native Americans, sang songs for their parents before feasting on Thanksgiving goodies. But a closer look showed how the Common Core Learning Standards were incorporated into the

performance. “They decorated their headdresses with all the shapes they need to learn and wrote a sentence in Native American symbols on their smocks, which they studied through our new English Language Arts-integrated Social Studies curriculum,” said Principal Donna DeLuciaTroisi.

The songs, a medley of nursery rhymes and holiday-themed arrangements, brought to fruition what the students learned in the first curriculum domain of the English Language Arts Common Core Learning Standards for kindergarten, titled “Nursery Rhymes and Fables.”

Paying It Forward The fifth-grade class at Seaford Manor Elementary School “paid it forward” at Thanksgiving by decorating brown paper bags that were used to bring needy families a Thanksgiving meal. The students each donated a dessert to include in the bags, which were then collected and given to Runyon’s Restaurant in Seaford. The restaurant

every year fills the bags with food and donates them to less fortunate families in the area. For the children’s efforts, fifth-grade parents also “paid it forward” by setting up a dessert station during the fifth-grade lunch period. After lunch students were treated to various confections to acknowledge their good deed. The effort is part

of a year-long “Pay it Forward” initiative. Each time students participate in a good deed, links are added to the “Pay It Forward” chain that hangs in the hallway. The goal is to make the chain wrap around the whole school as a symbol of the impact and “chain reaction” of their random acts of kindness toward others.
