Reason for the Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reﬂected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season

– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “ﬂawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness

with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.

The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts will present its annual Winter Festival, a showcase of the impressive talent being nurtured by the school’s many programs, on Wednesday, December 2nd, at 7 p.m. The evening will feature a sample from a full spectrum of artistic disciplines including film, theatre, dance, music and fine art. The evening will begin with a screening of “We Are LIHSA,” a short film offering a student’s eye view of daily life at the high school. Following this will be a presentation of select artwork, during which the young artists will reﬂect on what inspired them. Next, LIHSA performers will take to the stage for a rollicking song and dance production.

Nassau BOCES convened nearly 50 professionals from throughout New York State to share their successes and strategies for using Cognos, IBM’s business intelligence and performance management software suite, during a November 13th conference. The event was the first of its kind for the region, drawing attendees from the New York City Department of Education, Lower Hudson Regional Information Center, the Village of Garden City and the Nassau County Department of Information Technology. Student Spotlight THE GOOD OLD DAYS SUBMITTED BY: ALEXIS PASIE, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room

for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important

because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

Two Seaford High School softball players and two lacrosse players have committed to local colleges and universities to continue their athletic careers. Softball players Ashley Casazza and Amelia Cariddi, who will captain their high school team this spring, will join the Division II teams at Long Island University (LIU)/ C.W. Post and Dowling College, respectively. Lacrosse Team Captains Alyssa Mallery and Molly

VanDusen will play for the Division II teams at LIU/C.W. Post and Molloy College, respectively. The athletes called their choices “good fits,” based on the coaches, the athletic programs, their course of study, the feel of the campuses and the teammates they met. They also expressed how excited they are about playing at the collegiate level close to home so their families can see them play. Softball Coach Rob Perpall and Lacrosse

Collegiate Level Coach Kurt Dankenbrink lauded the talents of these students, both athletically and academically, saying, “They are leaders that take the time to help others. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, honored its grant recipients during a recognition breakfast at the People’s United Bank Park Avenue branch, New York City, on Thursday, November 19th. Four nonprofits in Long Island received a total of $25,500. Long Island recipients included Debt Counseling Corp., Family Autism Center, Family Service League, and Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County. People’s United Community Foundation awarded a total of $183,000 to 19

nonprofits throughout the communities it serves in New York. Overall, People’s United Community Foundation awarded $883,000 in grants to 144 nonprofit organizations in the communities it serves in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, during its third grant cycle this year. The funding was distributed within the foundation’s three areas of focus, with 42 percent allocated to community development, 37 percent to youth development, and 21percent to affordable housing initiatives. “People’s United
